I am fairly new to RPG but I just finished playing Oblivion and Dragon Age was recommended to me. Great game so far (I have only just begun...level 3) but I am having trouble with managing my party. I was just given the quest where you leave the camp for the first time with a group and encounter the darkspawn.

Some Problems:

1. Even though I select "whole party", the character that I am controlling is the only one who explores (the others do not follow). Hence, he encounters bad guys alone and gets pummeled while the others all wait way back at the initial spot where the party started the quest. I have tried to stop the main character right before the battle and then move the others up to that spot individually but there has to be a better way!

2. During battle, all hell breaks loose and it seems like chaos rather than "strategy". I really seem to suck at controlling spells, archers, etc. as well as directing my party because despite the fact that I attempt to direct them, they seem to act randomly and then die by the time I can see what is going on. For example, when controlling the archer (forgot his name) his bow is drawn but when I click on the enemy for him to shoot, he does not fire his weapon.

Anyway, things seemed to be a bit more straigt-forward in Oblivion (i.e. select a weapon/spell, engage enemy, kill enemy) and I finished the game as a single player rather than in a group. I can tell DA is every bit as cool of a game but I suck (LOL) and I am frustrated!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, I apologize in advance for the "newbie" post and I am sure there are post(s) that have addressed these questions but I looked through the forum a bit and there is quite a lot of content. Rather than trying to track everything down I thought I would just post this. Thanks again for any help you can provide.

If you see an icon of a hand with it's palm open below the character pictures, click it to toggle it into a picture of a "running man", which tells the rest of your party to follow.

If you think a fight is going to be hard (lots of wolves, or some high level caster standing in the back), then pause the game. During pausing, you can still give each of your partymembers orders.

Usually, party members attack either the enemy closest to them, or they attack whoever the currently selected partymember is attacking. Sometimes this is a matter of how the tactics are set, but other times, I have no idea why a partymember attacks a specific target. So yes, micromanagement is needed.

One thing I did on my first play through that really helped me was to go into each character's tactics setting and adjust which enemy they will target. By default, most tactics are set up with rules like "Enemey: Nearest" or "Enemy: Health > 75%". I changed most of those to "Enemy: Target of controlled character". That way, I could keep my main character selected most of the time, and my entire party would automatically gang up on whatever enemy I chose to fight.

Also, make sure that your characters have appropriate tactics set. It helps if you have your "tank" (whoever has the best armor and defense, and abilities to attract the attention of other characters - usually Alistair or your PC) set to "Aggressive" behaviour with "Defender" tactics. Make sure your archers are set to "Ranged" behaviour with "Archer" tactics. Make sure your mages are set to "Ranged" behaviour with "Healer", "Controller", "Damager" or whatever as appropriate.

And what AsheraII suggested is also important. Make sure your companions are set to follow (the running man icon), and pause the game frequently, especially in tougher battles, to give your characters more specific orders than what they're doing on their own through the tactics system.
