So I'm taking on Gaxkang and I gave my rouge backstabbing using Magebane poison to drain his mana. But Gax is basically spamming spells on me like no tomorrow for the duration of the whole fight. Does he have unlimited mana? Is it pointless to try and drain his mana?

He has a lot. While I personally did not use this technique to kill him, apparently Mana Clash deals somewhere in the realm of 650+ damage to him. Mana Clash drains all the mana from the target, dealing 1 point of damage per 2 mana burned, I believe, leading me to think his mana is around 1300-1500. But since I haven't brought my mage up to him yet, I can't say for sure.

My Morrigan did 670 Mana Clash on him, I heard about numbers like 2000 and more. Even if he has 1500 mana that is a huge mana pool and it would take you really long to drain it imo.

I used Wynn with mana clash once and he resisted. After that I just used her mana drain on him and let Gaxkang fuel her healing spells. Every strike from a Templar drains mana, I had 2 characters with Templar training pounding on him and Wynn healing him using stolen mana. Eventually he only cast spells only rarely, but it took a long time to drain him.

Wow that's a lot of mana. I guess it is pointless to try and drain his mana with Alistair (Templar) and magebane poisons. I should just concentrate on killing him regular (I don't have Mana Clash).

Thanks

When I tried using mana clash on him, he resisted. Very annoying since the cooldown is so long that you most likely won't be using it again.

Mana draining is not really an effective strategy, imo. If you can survive long enough to drain his mana, then draining his mana wouldn't help you a heck of a lot since you were already surviving his spells.  Best way to do it is equip a tank with high spell resist; you'll ignore all his magic attacks and you can already deal with a revenant by this point.

As I understand it the templar + concentrated magebane technique for mana denial is not limited to just the mana burning auto-attacks. I believe you need to open on his caster form with glyph of neutralization or mana clash to drain his mana completely in one shot. The manaburn is to keep his mana from regenerating. Mana drain, mana cleanse, and smite are also useful for keeping his mana low.

Who is Gaxkang? I have finished the game and never remember having to fight who or what ever it is.

Like all orange-named bosses, he has silly high magic resist. I never got Mana Clash to land on him.

Does Glyph of Neutralization offer a chance to resist? I never saw the need to get it with Mana Clash.

Tetracycloide, I haven't had much luck getting glyph of neutralization to land--he tends to resist it both the mana draining effect and part that stops him from casting.

I found the best way to beat him (I had a rogue character) was to have someone who's a ranger summon a creature and have him focus on hitting that. I snuck my pc behind him for backstabbing hits and everyone else just pummeled him. I had Wynne healing us the whole time.

One strategy that I use all the time is I craft a TON of lesser lyrium potions and set Wynne to drink one every time her mana is below 50%. So in effect, she had pretty mcuh unlimited mana.

Both of these are what helped me get through that battle with him. Hope it helps!

Does he have spell shield up?

If all your spells fail it's possible to just melee DPS him to death, even with miasma up.  Buff attack on everyone as much as possible and just go to town.  It lacks finesse and it's a little boring to watch but it works fine if there's enough attack buffs and healing flying around.

Gaxkang my girl has one of the most powerful swords in the game with three rune slots.

I don't know mav, but I really feel that this dude is overpowered my party was wiped out leaving me to barely survive. Even my chicks Morrigan and Wynne can't kill this using their spells. Anyway I suck at using mages, I just want to use the edge of my blade whenever I encounter them.

That's the $1,000,000 question.  In the game, he's one of those side-quests that you pick up if you scrounge around in every dark corner of the game world.  Eventually, if you find enough notes on various dead adventurers, your quest log will open up with a new quest telling you that you "have cause to speak with" a certain personage in Denerim, and there he'll be.  Enter into a rather cryptic conversation with him, kill him, get a good sword, done.

Story-wise, though... that's what I'd like to know more about.  It's hinted that he's very old, that he's been working behind the scenes and luring adventuring types like the PC with hints and rumour, and then killing them off -- perhaps just for sport -- but we're never really filled in on the history of who or what Gaxkang is.

Alternatively, he might simply be another one of those Baldur's Gate references, and was never meant to be anything more.  That never really worked for me, though; he's got too much "Dragon Age story" to be nothing more than an easter egg encounter, but not enough story attached to him for satisfaction.

So... who is Gaxkang?  Good question.  No real clue, personally.

I did manage to mana clash him for 1381 points of damage, though. Most damage I've ever done with any character so far.

I don't think he needs mana to cast. If you cast glyph of neutralization on him, he still casts away merrily. Perhaps he switches to using blood magic if he runs out of mana...

That's pretty much what I ended up doing (except for the ranger summoning a creature). Alistair tanking and drawing his attention with Taunt and Threaten. Wynne with Lifeward on Alistar and constantly ripping off healing, regen and Dispel Magic (to remove hexes). My rogue backstabbing and Morrigan with additional heals, group heals, and throwing whatever spells for additional damage. Gax seems to resist almost everything I cast at him (at least on HARD)

Took a lot of lyrium potions for Wynne on top of additional healing pots.

He does switch between two builds, like a mage going to AW mode.  Someone posted a link the other day about his loot drops which gave more details.

Nope.  I might have just needed higher spellpower (I didn't maximize it) but something like 4/4 times casting it on him as my first action of the fight resulted in "resisted" and he continued to cast spells as normal.  Hardly conclusive testing, I know, but I'm not one to continue trying to use a tactic that doesn't work consistently, especially when it still makes him immune to *my* spells.

If I wanted to finesse the fight I would alternate glyph of neutralization (arcane horror form) and glyph of warding (revenant form).  It probably would be more interesting to watch, but it's much easier to just equip spell resist gear and steamroll him.

I can`t beat this Gaxkang dude no matter what i try, currently playing a warrior through the game and when i get to Gaxkang i hope to do better, but when i used my mage, mana clash - resisted - glyph of newt - resisted - can only get him half way down on health then woopdedoo he heals back up, but i wont give up. :/

Mana drain is a poor strategy because pretty much all mages have more mana than hitpoints and it's much easier to reduce an enemy's hitpoints than mana.

To those having trouble landing spells on Gaxxkang:

-Stack magic. Stop wasting attribute points in willpower/con or anything else.

-Spell might, spell wisp and arcane mastery are very nice spell

-Vulnerability Hex and Affliction Hex are probably the most underrated spells in the game.

Cast Hexes on him and then paralyze him so he doesn't dispel them. Then proceed to unleash whatever mayhem you like on him.

If you have enough dps, Gaxxkang becomes very easy. It's possible to burn him down so fast that all he does is switch back and forth between forms. He'll rarely get a spell off.

Have Alistair (or your PC if he's a templar), equip the knight-commander armor (buy it from the guy outside Orzammar, 27g).  Give him a weapon with spell resist runes.  With the right gear setup you'll resist everything he throws at you, and it doesn't matter how long the fight takes.  I've never seen him heal back to full... he casts drain life, but I never thought it was a huge amount of healing.

The reason why he can take so much damage is not just because he has high health & mana, but it's also because he has the miasma aura. This virtually limits your melee companions to doing only 0 to 20 damage per hit. Purging magic spell or talent helps, and you'll find that he can be taken down a lot quicker.
