To have missed the holiday season window means they've missed out on people having more time to play due to do being on holiday. Whatever is holding up the release this isn't about them holding it back to make more money.
I'm going to have to go with Kepha on this. The holiday season is "the season" to make a lot of money for game content. This isn't like an iPhone, a Modern Warfare game or something that will stir up hype to get people lining up around corners, this is downloadable content for a niche RPG gaming community. Whatever the delay is, it has to be something that is so bad that they couldn't do the "well, we'll patch it afterward" routine.
Also from how the developers are reacting to the delay i.e not saying much. It really feels like they are majorly angry that someone higher up told them not to release last minute. Either that or they are trying to protect the testing people from being sacked for incompetence.
