Hello,

I’m sure that this has been asked many times before but I wanted
to ask it again. Do you have a favorite critter, undead or humanoid that continually
makes an appearance in your games or stories?

Please take a moment to provide for me and the community some
(3 or 4) of the favorite monsters you like to use in your stories and why. If
you are a builder you may find this informative. If you are just a Hero (player)
then help us by adding your thoughts to this list.

Thank you all for answering and happy gaming.

Here are some of my favorite monsters which I typically use
over and over again.  Mostly used because
I can get several game sessions from them in my campaigns.

#1 The Hobgoblin[/b]:
Versatile adversary trained in warfare, simple but effective.

#2 The Lich[/b]: The absolute
best Undead to use for any ongoing campaign, high level & magic.

#3 The Orcwort[/b]: A
terrifying plant capable of wiping out an entire village before moving to a new
location. Great for a high level party.

#4 The Ghoul[/b]: Great
low level Undead with three nasty attacks, need I say more.

Of course I have many other favorite monsters I enjoy
tossing at the players but these ones nearly always find a way into my ongoing adventures.

Thank you,

NB

I also like hobgoblins. I've got lots of them in my next module (including one as an optional companion).

Of those creatures currently in the game, I like:

- Trolls: A nice challenge when not expected, and can make spells like Burning Hands or Acid Splash actually useful at higher levels (if you've run out of 'real' fire/acid spells).

- Skeletons: Everyone likes a good old-fashioned animated skeleton. Their damage reduction can turn an otherwise annoying distraction into a challenge if no-one has a bludgeoning weapon handy. Plus you can use the basic skeleton appearance to make more powerful undead blueprints (baneguards, direguards, etc).

Creature blueprints that I've modified or created for my various modules include:

- Quell (Shaar Moan): Get too close, and your divine spellcasters are practically useless.

- Banshee (Shaar Moan): Watch half of your party die when she wails.

- Phase Spider (Isle of Shrines): much more challenging if you script them to teleport and turn ethereal.

- Jellies and Oozes (Isle of Shrines, Dragonglade): a staple of the older 2D sprite-based games.

Creatures in my next module include: Hobgoblins, Xvarts, Ankhegs, Gibberlings, Troll Hounds, Bonebats, Razor Boars (just to name a few).

I completely agree with skeletons - always brings back Ray Harryhausen films that introduced me to fantasy.

Carrion crawler - 8 tentacles of nastyness

Rust monster - I love seeing the party tanks cry like babies

Bugbears - giant, hairy goblins that like sneaking - what's not to like?

Gargoyle - especially when I manage to set it up right so it appears for all intents & purposes as a normal statue

Kobolds - hordes of the little fellas, with 'help' - like traps & pets

Cly.

I used Libris Mortis extensively in 'Shaar Moan'. There are even a couple of bonus higher-level nasties in the final battle if you play as a level 15 or greater character.

do you have any favorite giants and or creatures from the libris mortis that you could share with us?
something specific that you favor more than others?
thanks,

Are you making an NWN2 mod? A modeller?

My favorite "monsters" are actually, uh, humans. Or one of the demi-humans. Nothing makes as good an antagonist as a fellow human, complete with intelligence, cunning, and versatility.

As for creatures that are nice in a module, hobgoblins are good thanks to some things others have pointed out: some intelligence, trained in weapons, and also potential for better loot than, say, a carrion crawler.

Nothing makes a better adversary than a fellow peer, be it human, elf and or dwarf. I absolutely agree with the Curt Jester on this one.

I am not currently working on a nwn 2 module.

I like skeletons as well, hundreds of them roaming the countryside doing the twisted business of some vile unseen master.

Happy gaming,
NB

Like giant skeletons or giant humanoids - giant anything - just create a blueprint of anything with increased size - something I haven't thried is maybe a giant horse with a flaming aura; a giant nightmare

giant dog or domestic cat - but i dont think domestic cats have a complete range of animations for them to be a boss or the like - so a tiger or lion that is 12 feet tall at the shoulder

I think I might troll my blueprints for something that is a good model for giantness, and drop it in my module. The stranger the better; for that shock/awe effect...

I ran a game of high level players that went up against Kobolds.  SMART CRAFTY KOBOLDS.  By time I was done the ran away from them and said screw that.  It's surpiseing what you can do to a party when you got numbers, traps and smart planing.

I think SOU used kobolds best, and who can forget your little pal deekan. I remember them jumping into the giant cauldron to open the door to the dragons lair. That funny little sound they made when leaping in was enjoyable. I can't say kobolds are amoung my favorites but I understand that numbers can make up for a decent challenge.

Another of my personal favorite monsters to use often are the Mite. These creepy little fellas are just fun and discovering their lair can absorb an entire session even for the most experienced heroes. I just love these guys, traps and tricks are their forte and the pitter patter of their footsteps in between the walls can be madning.

Thanks,
