I finished the game the first time without using any mods, but on my subsequent playthroughs, I've used the following mods:

1. class & Talent Rebalance+ Mod - This mod has made the game much more balanced and challenging.  It's not perfect, but it takes a giant leap towards game balance.  Overpowered spells and talents have been nerfed and underpowered ones buffed.

2. The Winter Forge - Item crafting and customization.  Now my Arcane Warrior's shield bears the insignia of the Circle of Magi, which makes it full of win.  Adds a new skill in the game called Enchantment, which allows you to craft magic items.  The craftable magic items are really powerful, but the downside is that you need to spend three skill points to max out your Enchantment skill to be able to craft them (the Warden gets the first rank of Enchantment for free).

3. Character Respecialization v1.6 - A very nice mod that allows you to respec any playable character.  Perhaps due to its popularity, the expansion will have an official version of this mod built-in.
