The only thing I'm getting out of the whining about this DLC is that people don't want side content in their games anymore. If any game has a plot it should be main story and that's it. It's not like people these days want video games anymore. Everyone seems to want interactive movies it seems.
Side content is great.
But I wonder if some of the BSN discontent isn't with the theme of the ME3 ending. Which is (based on my interpretation of Bioware's comments and the ending itself): things are SO DIRE AND SO DRASTIC THAT YOU ARE DEFINITELY GOING TO DIE ANYWAY UNLESS YOU PICK ONE OF THE FORCED OPTIONS.
If things are so dire... why are you doing sidequests that don't help your cause? Keeping in mind that if Shepard dies for any reason, whether it's fighting Reapers or crashing into a tree or a really bad paper cut that bleeds out, that's the end of the war effort.
If that is the case, can Shepard really spare the time and risk doing sidequest missions for no (or inefficient) reasons?
Sure, why not? What RPG doesn't have a dire plot that the protagonist must solve expediently? Whether or not Shepard can spare the time, I sure can, being a video gamer who likes playing video game content.
This is rather extremist role-playing that no one has ever applied to other RPGs. I think that some people are grasping for excuses to hate on anything that doesn't involve changing the ending.
I can get behind side missions and sub plots, I love that about RPGs, but because they directly affect the main plot in some way and/or and because we get cool stuff while doing it. I liked the bomb mission, the academy, the temple, etc. At least for me, I can't speak for everyone, the problem with this DLC is that some aspects should have been treated better from the start (like the LI) and the rest feels like bit of an afterthought, besides that, again, "won't matter" because the ending doesn't really takes anything into account (maybe a few new slides?), and that's besides the point of wether i like the ending or not. Omega IMO had that problem, it's completely disconnected from everything, and after it takes place it's like it never happened, and though that isn't terrible (DLCs in general have that problem), it's disappointing considering this is Shepard's final chapter.
Hopefully the plot sorrounding the DLC will be entertaining and meaningful (Omega just delivered only on the first, From Ashes only on the second), I'm still considering buying it.
