Starting my dual wield rogue and was wondering if I should even bother with Deft Hands. Most chests suck anyways right?

Also, is there any point in getting the Survival skill?

download the bash lock mod, why try picklocking when you have that big axe on your back?

dunno anything about survival.

Starting my dual wield rogue and was wondering if I should even bother with Deft Hands. Most chests suck anyways right? Wrong. Most chests early in the game you might be able to pass up. But even there it's useful for the extra coin. Later on, you can come up with lots of items that are only available in chests. Now, you will get an NPC who can open lots of chests, true. But since you're a rogue, that affects party balance too. And it's just poor RP for a rogue who's supposed to have some since of being nimble bashing locks instead of picking them. Besides, if you're not breaking items (poultices!) from the bash locks mod, then it's a cheat, IMHO.

Also, is there any point in getting the Survival skill?

Bonus to nature resistance, forewarned is forearmed. But really, as a rogue, there's so many other skills you HAVE to pursue. I take survival when I've got nothing else that I 'need' to take at the time.

depends what sort of rogue you're going for. I'm assuming you want a high dps combat rogue rather than a utility rogue, in which case I'd say it may be worth while getting the 1st in the deft hands line just for the additional exp and coin from vendor trash in the origin story, other than that it's pretty much useless especially as consoles don't have the "accomplished rogue" achievement (learn all rogue talents) so save the talent points to spend on other things and let Leliana take the deft hands line since she comes with 2 points in it already.

As for survival, there are other skills that are more important, though you need 2 points in it for a certain quest so ultimately it's up to you whether you think its worthwhile

I didn't bother with Survival until late in the game when I really didn't know where else to put the points. Found it's actually quite useful in dungeon crawls as enemies then show up on you map even behind closed doors, etc. Hover your mouse over the red dots and it tell you exactly what's around the corner. Useful if you like to scout/pre-buff but don't have a stealth party member.

Disarming traps is useful... (deft hands helps with both traps and locks)

Deft hands rocks.

Spotting and disarming traps is not to be underestimated as a safety measure and also as a source of significant XP. A lot of chests may contain fairly mundane items, but I don't see how it's possible to have too many lyrium potions or healing salves TBH,

On console, disarming traps is useful. Picking locked chests is useful, especially since there is no way to bash them and nearly all chests are locked and later in the game some strategically placed chests contain much needed resources. (Yay, run-on!)

I found survival useful. It doesn't have to be the PC, you can give it to a companion and it still works. In which case, you see enemies through closed doors and then cast an AoE and wait for them to die. :)

It's ok I guess but I only upgrade it if I have nothing else, or I use the books to upgrade it. As for survival I just stick it on someone else like Zevran, but I prefer persuade for my main pc.

I was disappointed that survival does not help at all in detecting stealthed enemies.

Survival is very useful. You need 2 ranks to finish a quest at the Dalish camp. Also, it shows monsters on the radar. It also gives you some resistances.

Deft Hands is useful as well, but its up to you. If you bring Leliana or Zevran have them go down that branch and free you up. Its up to you really, but I always max it out with Leliana (a constant group member).
