So I think the success of multiplayer in ME3 (not to mention the push for more social [not as in zynga, as in with people] games going forward) gives a pretty strong indication that the next Mass Effect game will have multiplayer in it.

Given this, I think it'd be incredibly fun to have drop-in multiplayer for your main campaign that would allow for your friends to create squadmates that would sit on your ship (or at your home base) while your friends weren't there, but could join you for your main story and contribute to dialogue scenes (albeit not necessarily in a significant decision-making manner) whenever they "dropped in" to play.  This way you could keep the great storytelling but still allow for fun play with a friend.  This mode could be in place of or in addition to the current style of multiplayer from ME3, as it wouldn't really effect that game type in any way.  I don't think friends should "take over" an existing AI squadmate, as that might diminish that particular character's personality to have a friend playing as them (I'd rather think of the AI character as that character, not my friend playing that character).

What are all of your thoughts?

TLDR: Essentially your friends would create their own characters and play them as your squadmates in the campaign in a "drop in" style.

Personally my multiplayer gaming takes place exclusively in meatspace on a board or a table with beers and friends who are physically present. Computer gaming is a "me" activity, particularly RPGs which I'd find multiplayer immersion breaking. It's a good idea for a feature and it'd probably be popular but just speaking for myself I'd rather have eye surgery performed by a drunken blacksmith in an unswept stable with a punch in the face for anaesthetic.
