I was going to stay out of this one...but honestly....

If you feel that way go post in the "I hate Alistair" thread.  Obviously this thread was geared towards the fangirls.

I could go on for hours about all the personalities in the game and why they're that way.  I expect you'd have liked it better if Alistair had taken the inititive and played the game for you?

Since fangirls find it appropriate to not only come but write 2 pages long fluffy defending posts in Alistair hate thread, I think I have all the right to do the same in this one - apart from 2 pages post, no need since one word is enough - idiot.

And it proves your point to come into a thread and flame it just to be rude?  Then call someone an idiot on the boards?

*screenshots, then clicks the 'report post' button*

I really dislike haters.  You're welcome to your opinion, but don't climb on other people for theirs.

Ok. Sorry, but the kind of women who find a whiny, bumbling idiot, adorable are probably of little interest to me.

Trust me, you're probably of very little interest to us.

Edit: And people, stop arguing please, it's stupid. Some people love him, some don't. There is enough room for everyone to have an opinion.

I'm going to bet the older one is, the less entranced with him they are. And no, Cybercat, I'm not insinuating you're old. :o Just more mature possibly.

See, that's just annoying. Why do people have to start being insulting about it?

I wouldn't go to the degree of OMG HE'S THE PERFECT GUY, and to the people who post about being obsessed with him and the game... I'm slightly worried, actually.
Of course, when my boyfriend starts romancing one of the ladies of DA:O, I'm probably going to be wooping, hollering and asking for screenshots/vids. Similarly I'll joke about scoring with Alistair. As far as what my partner would think of this - we'd be sharing the experience. Not to mention any obsession that may happen would be minor and be no new thing to a couple of Doctor Who fans (mmm, Tennant).
However, I must agree: Alistair is well written, and, if he were a real person, I would get on with him quite well, but his childishness would get on my nerves eventually. I can only stand the "class clown", as someone put it, for so long - and I was usually the target of them back in school.
Someone mentioned age may determine whether someone finds Alistair "perfect" - what I want to see is whether this is the same demographic that finds Edward Cullen to be the "perfect" boyfriend. =P Just curious.

You are more than welcome to call me old, no need to apologize, I am old for teenagers. I am over 40 and I know what I want and I can see through men much better than girls twice younger.
The kind of behavior that NPC has is something I would discard irl as unstable and idiotic.

Not intended to be insulting. I just really do think that what you want from a mate tends to change as you get older/more mature. -shrug-

Well said!

See, it's possible to disagree, and do it civilly.  :)

EDIT: Furthermore, I agree with you.

I see the appeal of the character on screen, IRL, I'm pretty sure I'd get irritated after a while.  Heck, I get irritated with him in the game sometimes.  I'm always yelling at my characters like they can hear me.

Both the female characters I've made so far have been of the personality type that they fit well with him, so that's where they've ended up.  When I make my blood mage on my next play through....not so much.  >.<

I think it's great to have options.

And how old or mature do you think someone must be in order to find this particular character attractive? I think it has more to do with the fact that preferences differ from person to person rather than from age-group to age-group. I'm 23, if that's of any interest to you, and reasonably mature, although I do realise that the minute someone says they think they are mature it makes them look the opposite. Ah well

How is that insulting? I think Sarielle makes a fair point. Romantic idealism is typically considered a youthful trait, rightfully or not, and deeming someone "perfect" is definitely the mark of romantic idealism. Older people might like Al, but his flaws are taken into the equation more readily, not ignored or dismissed.

To answer this tersely: no.

Alistair has his shortcomings, like any person. But I find refreshing the paradox that his imperfections lend, in part, to his "perfection." Edward Cullen, on the other hand, is pasty and gross. Heh. Mind you I'm neither young nor obsessed with Alistair - and such is my opinion, only.

I say it is insulting because he/she seems to be making a dig at the maturity of some people who happen to fancy the pants off Alistair

I would not say he is perfect, perhaps, but he is as close to my ideal man as I have seen in a game, although I really only have Carth and Kaidan to compare him to <_<

The word 'perfect' was not meant to be taken literally, I think.

If that's the case, then I owe you an apology.  I thought you were calling me an idiot.  I'm not that overprotective of pixels, no matter how charming their writers managed to make them.  :)

I just don't like people wizzing on someone else's parade.   Like I said, I think you're more than welcome to your opinion.  Wouldn't it be nicer if you kept it more civil though?

From a guys view alister is one of them spinless idiots that once you give the right push here and there can become a great leader....it's just getting him out of the spinless idiot mode that takes you all game to do. If you weren't there tageing along at this side from the start he would be dead back at the tower. While all along your the hero in the back ground doing all the dirty work.....hmmmm does this remind any one of anouther king and his right hand man?

I apologize if I offended anyone in this thread, but I rather meant perfect for me. :)

People do get angry easily, however. No need to flame or be rude to the people who do fancy him. Does anyone have a link to the I hate Alistair thread? I'm interested to read it

Until then, go Alistair!

Ali's not perfect true but Edwards a creepy obsessed stalker :/ Like No just No. Edward's not perfect in any way. (Wait he's physically perfect. Got to give credit where credit is due) Twilight has its own set of hugely distrubing issues that yeah are way off topic.

*shoves urge to bash Twilight deep deep down*

Anyways Ali is annoying, whiny, irritating, spineless and a foolish idealist but compared to the rest of the group he's probably to closest you get to being normal which is why I prefer him. I mean you have Lei who did questionable actions in her background and doesn't seem to regret it and turns to religion to make her feel better. Zev who kills people and is proud of it, Morri who is a sadisitic, powerhungry, unsociable woman that cuts off her nose to spite her face. Sten who...well he's Sten, Shale who wants to mash everyone into paste, Wynne has her own set of issues (and frankly she nags. Its annoying).

I probably left someone out but yeah they all have issues none of them are perfect. Which frankly makes them good characters.

See, I started to just say age, but maturity level varies for people.

It depends on what you've dealt with in your life, imo. Are you a college kid whose parents pay for everything (this is a rhetorical "you," by the way)? Do you have a mortgage? Kids? Have you ever been to a point where you weren't sure if you'd make it this month? Are you out of high school?

Some of those things make you more practical than others, and less romantic I'd wager.

Good to hear an opinion on that at least.
As such I will note I'm not a fan of Twilight and haven't read the books, but seeing some of the posts here reminded me of the typical teenage reaction to the Edward character.

And might I note that the old addage applies to that paradox, that "love is seeing an imperfect person perfectly". Not necessarily true in all experiences, but hey.

I read and somewhat enjoyed the simplicity of those books, but I have to tell you I really don't have an EC thing. I enjoy Alistair, but EC is like... described in the books with the word perfect every three sentences.

As for the age thing... I'll be 27 next month, I've been married for 9 years (again next month. NEVER get married the day after your birthday) and I have a 7 year old. I have everything I want, but the game and Alistair are fantasy. I don't think Alistair would come off in OUR world as well as he does in his. But he is the most perfect male npc in any RPG I've ever played. He's just well written and it's hard not to like him.

Though, on my husband's playthrough with a male pc, I sorta hated Alistair. Funny how it works out.

Yeah. I think that comparing those demographics is a little skewed. You're talking about two different characters with two completely different personalities here.

I think that it's those imperfections that make the character appealing to some women. Too typically the characters in these games are perfect. I like that he's so deeply flawed. I also like that you can change that if you so choose. That's what's awesome about the reactionality of the game.

When you toughen up Alistair, he's far more intense and assertive. I think that's the point. What would be the fun in the game if you couldn't develop your traveling companions? I change Morrigan and Wynne too. All part of the fun.
