Not sure about perfect, but I do think he's the best Male LI in a Bioware game I've played so far. I don't normally do the Female paths, but I will say Alistair is my ManCrush.

I just find it strange that he is so sensitive and is such a little whiny baby, yet he's a warrior tank, his personality doesn't really suit his class/role.

This thread is the second one of it's kind. The last one got shut down. I wonder if someone's already said this.

So no, it's not just you.

I find all of those things perfectly consistent with his background. Remember, he isn't a warrior by choice, per se. And I know several veterans in real life who could out-sensitive Alistair any day. While stoicism can be an admirable trait, it can also be a sign of an emotionally stunted existence.

I never really found Alistair to be whiny at all, personally. He is a guy who obviously yearns for some kind of family connection, but keeps losing it. Eamon sends him away, Duncan dies, Goldanna is hardly welcoming. Ultimately, even his relationship with the Warden will be gone (unless one does the DR). Kind of tragic really. His being upset by and sensitive to the losses in his life actually make him more believable and likeable to me. I sympathize with him. Yet, he is plucky enough to keep going and retain a fairly optimistic view without being a silly pollyanna or devolving into a bitter cynic.

Even his reluctance to lead and preference for following fits with his desire to find a "family" to which he can belong. Interestingly, he seems self-aware enough to know this himself. Which is another thing I like about his character. He is probably the most honestly self-aware of all the companions
