I have a theory about the architect. Any one who has read the book  "The Calling", knows a bit about the architect, it can talk, its wishes, and it does not feel the call to the old god. But how is it created?
Possibly through the dark ritual that you have a chance to take part in with Morrigan. The soul of the Archdemon goes into the child with the taint, and as the taint advances in the child, he begins to adapt darksapwn features, yet he does not feel the calling because the spirit of an old god is in him, so he is essentially with an old god already.
This accounts for the talking, the lack of the need to search for an Old god, and possibly the plan to have all of Thedas drink darkspawn blood. It is of both worlds and wants to see peace.
As for how, an architect was created prior to Morrigan and (Insert character name here), if Morrigan knew of the ritual, maybe someone else did. When the person was chosen to give the final blow, a witch approached him much like Morrigan did, and the proceded with the ritual crating an Architect.
Any thoughts on this?

That would mean the Architect is also an Old God itself, wouldn't it? It could also be part of some unknown race that was captured by darkspawn. Maybe he is a survivor of the old Elves, and that's why he is unrecognizable?
