Hi everyone, I love RPGs and played Dragon Age games several times. I was never really interested in Mass Effect because I prefer fantasy settings but DA3 is still pretty far so I decided to give ME a try. I'm looking for a good story, good characters and a game where my decisions affect the story and the world around my character.

So here I am, I will start my first ME1 playthrough soon. Is there any thoughts you want to share? Anything I should know before I start? Like "recruit companion X as soon as possibile" or "be sure to get Y done before Z because there's a bug in this quest". Anything that, without spoilers, can improve my overall game experience.

Thank you!

do not rush, explore. there are many quests, locations, events (some are based on backgroud or paragon or renegade your Shep is). (check asteroids belts, always).

yeah one more thing however, keep your squad balanced, there are locks and archieves that requires some level in hacking, which your Shep could not have.

You may initially feel overwhelmed with the options at level-up - don't worry, leveling up is pretty frequent in this game, so if you don't have a point to spare on something you'd like now, you won't have to wait too long for the next level up.

I'd keep one of the conversation skills, Charm or Intimidate maxed, or close to maxed, but only one - I think spending points on both is a waste.

Initially you are likely to find it difficult to hit things; this'll get better, as you gain skill in the weapon you use. A simple pistol is a very powerful weapon in the game, when you just upgrade your pistol skill; you don't necessarily need any other weapon. Unless you are a soldier, I'd recommend sticking to one weapon, and upgrading your skill at that, and spending skill points on other skills.

For an adept, "lift" is probably the best skill.

The gameplay is different from the DA series, so don't get discouraged too soon, you'll get the hang of it. By the time you get to the Citadel, take your time to explore; it's a big place with sidequests, and lots of aliens and great lore. :)

Just a correction - it is "decryption" and "electronics" that you need - hacking is a different skill, that lets you temporarily make artificial enemies to attack their allies.

if he will play through entire game, with all sub-quests complete, all planets scaned and secured he will end up at level 51-54, given that he have both dlcs.

so as result most of Shep skills will be maxed, even if there are very few points your character receive at higher levels with level up.

and yes decryption and electronics.

also shifty space cows. beware of those.

Actually on a very first, never played before, game it caps at 50.  On your first play through, I'd suggest a lower difficulty.  Just relax and enjoy the story, don't get too caught up in the game mechanics past what your really need.

Once you get done with the Citadel and get access to the Normandy again I suggest you get Liara first. While you don't have too it does add to the story some. I will say it is rather funny if you wait to get her last but I won't spoil that.

When exploring planets in the Mako always remember to save often. Oh and when talking to anyone with the dialog wheel to always use the investigate side. This will often open up codex entries which gives you xp.

The autosave in this game is terrible.
Save often, after every big fight, SAVE SAVE SAVE

Also, explore.

This.

and you are going to use decryption on a lot of locked cases.
I recommend Tali, you can bump her encryption skills quite early in the game.

This.

Or, in terms which will make more sense to you at the time, once you leave the Citadel, the game opens up into the middle section where you choose in what order you would like to do your missions, a la Dragon Age. Liara is on Therum, so go there first. Then you will have your full team of squadmates and can play around with group composition and who you like as a character, etc.

On my first playthrough I made the mistake of going to Noveria first and got hopelessly stuck (this is the equivalent of going to Orzammar straight out of Lothering). It's tough, and probably best left to last unless you know what you're doing.

Also, sidequests. There's a lot of them, and if you don't keep on top of them (for example, because you're keen to get through the story) it's easy to lose track and they end up being just so many fetch-quests in your journal. As soon as you've got Liara I recommend doing all your sidequests before continuing with the main missions to help keep the story relevence of them in your head.

Last note: sniper rifles are trash in ME1 (in sharp contrast to 2 and 3). You need so many points in the skill and such a good gun before you can shoot accurately, that you're only using it for about the last 10% of the game. Don't bother with it at all.

Enjoy.

EDIT: Oh, and Mass Effect has quick time events. Watch out for these.

Garrus and Ash do well with a sniper rifle so don't be afraid to rank up their skills. My suggestion for the order to do the missions is like this: Therum (Liara recruitment), Feros, Norveria, Virmire.

Are you planning to play ME2 and ME3 with this save? If so 3 things I suggest you complete if side quests are not your thing. First is make sure you finish the collect asari Matriarch writings side quest, do Gavin Hossle's side quest on Feros, and to make sure you buy the elkoss combine license though I don't remember who sells it. These can only be done in ME1 and will come into play in ME3 in a fun and enjoyable side quest.

Oh yes, that's a good point - sniper rifles are fine on your companions.

It should be noted that once you reach level 20, it will unlock a mission on Luna (Earth's moon). Completing this side mission is very important as it will allow you to unlock and choose one of two specializations for your class.

So after you reach level 20, the next time you board the Normandy, use the Galaxy map and navigate to a cluster you have already visited (Widow cluster, Citadel) is recommended. Admiral Hackett will then inform you of the mission.

Thank you everyone! I'm taking notes ;) Yes, I think I will play ME2 and ME3 too.

I started playing and for the first time ever in a game I needed a lower difficulty. I couldn't even get through Eden Prime! Now I'm getting better, sticking with guns for now.

I really like the story so far and the characters... But I hate the mako!!!! ;)

Yes I'm saving a lot, but that's something I already do in every game I play.

I went to Pinnacle Station but I don't think I will complete all the missions there... Unless you say there's something more than just fighting!

No shame in lowering difficulty. I think the difficulty setting is just there to make it a bigger challenge for your next playthroughs when you already know what you're doing.

Pinnacle Station is completely optional. I never bother with it at all really. It's exactly what it seems: a training ground. Nothing more, really - it doesn't intergrate into the plot.

And the mako had a lot of people tearing their hair out - myself included. Oddly, however, you find yourself getting oddly nostalgic about it in the later games (or maybe that's just me?).

Also note that you get significantly less XP if you kill enemies from within the mako.

The mako isn't the problem, it's the terrain.  If there's one thing BioWare gave us in ME1, it was mountains and pleanty of them.  They love them mountains.

I played the entire trilogy on Casual, first time around. The story is what I am after, shooting, oh well.

- and another note - when you get to ME3, immediately install extended cut DLC. The original endings are... abyssmal. Wish I could scrub my brain.
