- I thought Miranda and Harbinger had great roles in Mass Effect 3.

- Jacob is a cool bloke, even more so in ME3. The fact that he cheated on Shepard in an alternate universe means nothing to me because I know it didn't happen to any of mine.

- I like Garrus, but he is a bit of a boot-lick.

- Destroy is my least favourite ending, apart from Refuse which I do not count as an ending.

- On the subject, I do like Refuse for being a nice, healthy kick in the balls to the retake movement.

- I believe Mass Effect 2 is the best game in the series, but Mass Effect 3 is better designed and more enjoyable.

- I liked the new squad members in ME3 - James, EDI & Javik are 3 of my faves and I use them a lot.

How is refuse a "kick in the balls" when the retake movement was about, you know, refusing the endings? If anything it's an homage to them.

I would say that synthesis is very unpopular.

No, that is not what we wanted  at all because refuse still reflects the other choices and what they bring.

- I <3 the Mako.

- Jacob was your generic, somewhat boring "Average (GI) Joe" type, but all the hate he gets is ridiculous.

- Ashley is the most realistic character in the whole series and right most of the time.

- Synthetics are just (in case of the geth: buggy) software emulating sentience and in my canon playthrough I only made peace and kept the geth "alive" on Ranoch for their fire power (and chose Destroy later on without any hesitation).

- Dat genetically tailored azz and caring for your clone/sister doesn't make you a likable or particularly interesting character.

I like Allers, I like Vega I like Synthesis, I love the original endings as much as I love the EC, I think ME3 is the best game of the decade. There. Also despite how this isn't the right section, I love DA2.

Even though I'd still shoot a hole into Han'Gerrel's skull, I think the quarians are right about wanting to blow the crap outta the Geth. What is more, I possitively believe that most people would agree with it in a real life situation, but they're just hypocrits to themselves. I had a two hour conversation with three real life friends about this (two of which chose to let the quarians die on their canon playthrough), and when rational thinking settled on looking at the big picture, it just made no sense that anyone with half a brain would rather see a race of benign intelligent organics dead over some Reapercoded spacejunk.

Unpopular opinions? Well...

ME1

-I've never enjoyed Liara as a Love Interest, a Companion, or as a Character, ever since ME1. I routinely leave her mission to the very last.

-I think ME1 had the weakest Big Decisions of the franchise: all story choices are variations of 'kill/don't kill,' which were disappointing at best when conveyed into ME2.

-I feel ME1 Ashely Williams was the best written (and most attractive) female companion/LI in Bioware history, and agree with her concerns of foreign security threats aboard the Normandy.

-I thought Udina was a pretty interesting character, thanks to the post-mission conversations you could have with him and Anderson at his office. He was grouchy, but I never felt his betrayal was personal.

-Saren had far too little presence for me to find him compelling.

===

ME2

-I feel ME2 was the worst part of the trilogy.

-I feel ME2 was by far the worst when it came to Choices and Consequences, both in ME1 imports and in in-game reflections.

-I feel the Suicide Mission, while a heroic high, was a horrible design decision due to it's impact on character plots and relevance to ME3.

-I dislike most of the character designs, especially the female designs, and bought the appearance packs just to be able to put armor on Miranda and Tali.

-I actively dislike how fawning and nigh-sycophantic of Shepard much of the supporting cast is, including various fan favorites.

-I actively dislike a number of the companions, including a lack of respect for Tali, negative respect for Garrus's character regression, and Samara's role as a Knight Templar.

-I thought the ME1 cameo design sucked, but didn't mind the emails.

-I felt The Illusive Man and the partnership with him was the best part of the game, and I felt TIM was correct in not sharing all information with Shepard.

-I feel all the Male Shep romances range from exploitative of the emotionally vulnerable (Tali's Crush, Miranda's self-confidence) to downright sexist (Jack and the Healing ****).

-I liked Jacob's romance with Fem!Shep, was ambivalent about Garrus becoming a steady relationship rather than a fling, and was apathetic about Thane.

-I feel the Loyalty Mission concept was poor design, because it rendered most of the game's trilogy-progression optional and ultimately marginal.

-I feel ME2 wasted the middle of the series rather than advanced it, and was poor planning all around.

-I disliked how marginal the Collectors were in their own game, and how most characters had no stake or personal involvement in the Reaper plotline.

-I thought Liara and Garrus were particularly ill-handled from their ME1 statures, and that Tali was too much of a fan-pet who didn't get called out enough.

ME3

-I like James Vegas's role.

-I feel the squad design was superior to the previous games, both in role and interaction.

-I feel ME3 had the best social/squadmate roleplaying of the trilogy.

-I strongly disliked the Cerberus role in the game, and in its DLC.

-I though Rannoch was overly cheesy and idealistic.

-I dislike what I see as Geth whitewashing.

-I wasn't particularly bothered or concerned by autodialogue.

-I understood the intent behind the original ending and was ambivalently satisfied by it.

-I think the game's biggest flaws weren't in the ending, but rather the Cerberus plot.

I sided with the geth. I thought their plight had an awful lot of parallels to the slaves in America. I found the quarians to be extremely hypocritical.

- Synthesis is canon.

- Allers is the canon LI.

- Fetch quests were the epitome of how awesome sidequests can be.

- All ME2 squadmates received more that enough screentime. Infact Miranda received too much!

- ME2 sucked and its suicide mission was awful. One of the worst finales designed ever.

- I thought Jacob was likeable in ME2 and he had some of the more interesting conversations and one of the better loyalty missions

- I loved the mako and the uncharted planets in ME1

- I liked the hammerhead

- I never really cared about Garrus or his forced "bromance" with Shepard

- Liara is laughable and dull as the Shadow Broker

- Wrex's pushy and selfish attitude pissed me off in ME3

- I think ME2 ruined any chance of continuity in the series

- I didn't hate Udina and didn't think he should have died in ME3

- The (boring & repetitive) Hackett and Anderson conversations in ME3 are some of my least favorite moments in the series and made me dislike them both

-I liked the EC endings. Shepard's Control monologue was my favorite of the three (even if I prefer the Destroy ending slightly more). I was also fine with the breath scene. TBH I thought the EC did a fine job fixing the problems of the original ending. It was a reasonable compromise IMO.

-I disliked Vega until his Menae banter with Garrus. I admit I *wanted* to dislike him for his poor introduction but he grew on me. Between him and Diana I kept on thinking "Jersey Shore in Space", but I was wrong!

-I liked Ashley in ME1, and never got the impression she was a fanatic or racist.

@Shallyah

Could you explain this rational thinking that you say set in amongst your friends? From your post it sounds like it boiled down to "The quarians are alive, the geth aren't. Blow 'em up." This is fiercely a matter of opinion with little to no solid reasoning behind it (regardless of which way you believe). If that's not the case I'd love to hear your reasoning for what makes the quarians logically, statistically and tactically the best choice if you pick one or the other.

The Mako is pretty much awesome.
I hate streamlining. The tedious needs to exist to reinforce awesome.
class balance is annoying. I'm fine with one class sucking in comparison to another.
Killer music for the wards in ME1. Kind of a unique depressing/ cracked out euphoria vibe.

I like ME3 more than the whole trilogy.
I like Dragon Age 2 story & ending over DA:O.
I like companions/squad members having their own armor.
I play as Default Shepard & Default Hawke.
I find ME1 boring.
I loved the new vehicle in ME2.
I have Ashley as my only LI.
I liked Omega DLC.

- I never thought the suicide mission in ME" was all that special.

- Was annoyed at the squad in ME2 for the single reason they never talked to each other.

- I dont think Isabela needs pants, I mean, it worked or the Romans to conquer the world without them.

- I like ME3 way more then ME2, even the ending.

- Really dislike Liara more and more after ME1.

- Jacob was one of my most trusted squadmates in ME2.

- I liked the elevators in ME1 and missed them in later games. A hidden loadingscreen is better then a visible one.

Some unpopular opinions? I'll try to go with ones that haven't been said yet.

-Indoctrination is a poorly utilized plot device. A lot of the most obvious developments that could arise out of this device (i.e. having to fight old friends because they're indoctrinated) aren't explored at all. Generally, it's used as a way to bring a villainous or ambiguous character into total alignment with the Reapers (i.e. Saren and the Illusive Man), without having to do the heavy lifting of character progression in order to get them from point A to B.

-I'd probably rate ME2 as very slightly my favorite game of the whole series, but I wasn't a big fan of the 'disloyalty=death' mechanic of ME2. I'm just not sure how a character's failure to fully trust Shepard makes him or her more likely to be killed by stray bullets. It'd make more sense for disloyal characters to either ditch you or even betray you outright.

-I think it would be interesting if ME2 had made it impossible for you to get everyone's loyalty simultaneously. Perhaps some characters won't be loyal to paragons, or to renegades, or distrust each other too much to fully embrace the mission unless they know Shepard's backing them and not the other jerk. I find it to be a little much for Shepard to be the galaxy's greatest therapist, and that's the feeling I get from the fact that you can always be on everyone's good side.

I also think it would be interesting if we found ourselves in a situation where we were forced to work with at least one character who for once, doesn't have that inner redemptive spark of humanity just waiting to be rekindled by Shepard. If nothing else, it would add to the sense of feeling 'out of place' that we should have, given the circumstance of being forced to work with Cerberus.

-I think ME1 made far too much use of the MacGuffin. First you're looking for the Beacon, then you need the Quarian who has the Evidence, then you need to find the Conduit, but in order to get that you need the Cipher and the Other Beacon, etc. The whole plot is structured as a series of events in which characters chase after items which are important because they're important.

-Destroy is my least favorite ending by a country mile. Don't want to spend too much time on this one, as I'm sure that no good will come of it.

-Lastly, let me echo the positive sentiments for ME1-era Ash. Having lived in Indiana the last few years, I find her to be convincingly Midwestern (maybe that just means I'm a bad judge of character, but there you go). She's one of the few characters where no concessions were made to gamers' fantasies or wishes: No one sat around and said, "Let's make her Midwestern, religious, nationalistic and tomboy-ish, because that's totally the fantasy of every male gamer."

Time to uncork the H-bomb: Mass Effect was Drew's baby, and he abandoned his baby. I don't give a rat's about Star Wars. Just like so many of the ME characters, we, too, have borne the sins of the father.

And as Romeo & Juliet ended: "All are punish'd."

I agree with pretty much everything you say about ME2, but have to disagree about ash. She was great in ME1, but as a nitpick I have to say she shares more southeastern traits than midwest. I grew up and currently live in Wisconsin, and have spent a lot of time, and/or have family in other states considered to be "Midwest" and I don't really think Indiana qualifies. They border more on ohio mentality, and ohio aligns more with the east, despite qualifying as "midwest". Ash doesn't really fit into midwest or eastern, again, always struck me as a southeastern girl.

Again, just a nit though. Probabaly an over-analyzed one at that.

@tevix:

You're right, "Midwestern" is probably a bad term; after all, it's a pretty huge and diverse place. But I would say that Indiana has quite a bit more red state in it than Ohio, particularly when you get close to the more sparsely populated southern parts of the state, which border Kentucky. Someone like Ash wouldn't be at all out of place in lots of places in IN.
