Yes, pretty much. I also get a little confused when people call his desire to see Loghain dead "petty vengeance" - especially if they played Couslands/Tabrises who delighted in killing Howe/Vaughan. If someone had slaughered the only people I'd ever considered family, pinned the murder on me, sent assassins after me and just generally done really horrible things across the nation I'm pretty sure I'd want this person at the very least thrown in the dungeons forever. If someone had said "hey, instead of doing that, what if we give him the greatest honor you could possibly imagine and make him your brother-in-arms", my reaction would not have been a pretty one, let me tell you.
My killing of Vaughan was to defend people, not out of revenge (which is why I don't kill him on any other characters). Loghain is already beaten. It's not petty, but it's not something I truly support. Also, Alistair's views on joining the Grey Wardens are a tad naive.
Well, to be fair, Loghain was already beaten before he tried to kill you. He just didn't honor your victory. I wish I could save him, just once, to see that content, but I can't seem to make myself roleplay a character that idealistic. Had Zevran tried to murder me again after I had let him go once, he would never live to see the day after either.
Regarding the topic of the thread, do you know which male character was my favorite in the whole damn series so far? The carta dwarf in DA:O who is just trying to feed his child. It was such a small moment, but being forced to kill him had a monumental impact on most of my wardens. He fits perfectly into the male norm, of course, but there you have it. I would not want all, or even most, men to be that way, what I love about the series so far is the epic variation we are being offered. This goes for both male and female characters, but I dare not poke my head into the thread about womens roles in DA.
