Thinking of going AW/SH with medium armor. It seems that the best way to go with an arcane warrior is a tank but I don't want to be running around in massive armor as a mage, no matter how melee-oriented he is. I want to stick with medium/light.
Is this even worth it?

You can use the elven armor set which has a decent willpower set bonus. Eventually though , I would switch to wades superior dragonscale set, which also has no fatigue penalty.
If all you care about is light armor, forget about it. Your spec point is better spent on blood mage.

I never tank with my AW because I don't like tanking to begin with. So it's possible. AW gives you high survivability. I think of myself as a spellcaster first and foremost who can deal some melee damage if I get cornered. I would recommend going with Wade's Superior Dragonscale armor, either medium or heavy, though. You don't have to go massive (I don't since it draws more threat), but a nice piece of heavy armor can save your butt.

Exactly what I do when I'm AW/SH myself. Mage first - using staff from a distance. Switch to sword n board and whale at em when necessary or needed - or low on mana. But I'd go at least for heavy armour.
Edit: If it's just the look of the massive that bothers you get the mod (if you're on pc) that provides AW 'armor' that is actually robes. So you get armor protection with robes. Umm ... Rasana's Armory is the one, I think. Or you can craft your own (armor or robes) with The Winter Forge.

Is the melee damage dealt by an arcane warrior any good though?

It's a pretty strong auto-attack damage wise but your attack rating is a bit low unless you use some Dex points (attack is buffed by SP*0.2 when Combat magic is on, IIRC while damage is boosted by SP for damage which is a very nice boost).

From the middle to the end of the game I had my AW/BM in wades dragonscale which gives a -10% fatigue (bonus!), and I ran him as DPS.
AW is a great spec (much better than shapeshifter) for doing damage when your mana runs out, because combat magic is an instant, you can still cast spells when/if your mana comes back, and you can tank and dps.
So when out of combat you turn off ALL of your sustainables. Enter combat and run your mana out, then at this point you can either chug mana potions or switch to combat magic and melee em to death. You can also with the right spells serve as a backup tank if your main tank dies. But getting and keeping aggro in medium armor is not gonna be easy, so in my case I only switched to this mode if everybody else died and I didnt feel like reloading.
Casting spells while combat magic is on is not a wise DPS choice. It gives you a 50% fatigue hit, so you will be out of mana very quick.
From a true efficiency standpoint AW is poor relative to BM when dealing with out of mana situations for DPS. With AW 3 out of 4 talents are defensive, and there is only one specific late game set of armor that makes any sense to wear for DPS. So if its a choice between AW and BM pick BM, but AW is more offensive than Shapeshifting and Spirit Healer.
