Rape as a story element in Dragon Age 3.

I'm aware that the topic of rape in entertainment media is a very sensitive one, and one shouldn't be exposed to such content without some kind of fair warning beforehand. Still, the inclusion of rape in video games, while a hot topic, could benefit the story in new and dramatic ways, albeit it would have to be designed for an adult audience in mind.

There are three, non-mutually exclusive ways one could go about this:

1.) Raping the player character.

Let's say your character, the Inquisitor, is forced to marry a very wealthy and influential trader or nobleman/woman. That person then, commits the Inquisitor to a brutal, abusive, and often humiliating spousal relationship. This sort of story hook could easily provide the player with a strong reason to follow the quest up until its culmination, resulting in being given the choice of either killing your torturer, or sparing him as he pleads for his life.

2.) Have the player character rape someone.

It could be revenge, or merely compensation for a service the player character provided by lending his sword. Some would argue whether this qualifies as rape at all, but if such an NPC would be initially unwilling, yet circumstances forced him or her to give sexual compensation as the only reward of choice, it could still qualify as rape in most countries, even if the character eventually (but reluctantly) agrees to it.

Alternative: Raping one (or more) of your companions. This could have a profound impact on the game's story.

Think about it. How will that person view you? Would (s)he try to remain stoic in front of the horrors she endured or would (s)he suffer a mental breakdown, and no longer be of use to your character?

More than that, if your companion(s) cannot contribute further to the party, how will they be dealt with? Will the player character kill them, abandon them, or just use them nothing more than sex dolls -- something to be thrown away?

3.) Force your companions to rape someone.

Your companions could be rapists. BioWare has had evil companions accompany your characters in the past: thieves, murderers -- so why not rapists? These companions could be glad to serve under the Inquisitor's command, or they might be reluctant to do so; even more, the Inquisitor would have to watch his/her back around them!

Opinions?

Yes. Rape is "just a game."

I would be extremely surprised if you were a woman after reading this.

NO. F. U.

*Sigh* OK perhaps that was a little extreme on my part, but seriously. Rape can be a significant story element, as it is in the City Elf origin, but let's not get carried away.

It can be part of the game. If murder is okay, why not rape?

It's worth noting I think it should be entirely optional in the game.

It's not "new".

In the City Elf origin, Shianni suffers this, and it's threatened for the female Tabris before she escapes. It's also implied or outright said in DA2 that there are templars who rape mages. I also thought there were implications that Flemeth might rape men to gain her daughters, but I can't remember whether that was wild speculation or something that Morrigan hinted at.

Rape can be part of the story, and has been part of the story in DA:O and DA2. But I don't think any of your proposals are very wise.

Do you realize that making a statement like this sounds like you just want to act out a rape fantasy?

Rape is a very serious topic and should be approached with caution. Remember that comment by the Lara Croft team about the main hero being raped? You can't just say "then she/he gets raped" and expect people to follow along without being perplexed (for the lack of a better word).

So just having the PC raping someone is just dumb and also insulting.

Just so you know, us rape fetishists actually have our own opinions and all. I don't enjoy playing the role of the perpetrator, usually. But it's just a game and I don't see what's wrong with people who do.

Because thievery and murder can be given a cool or ambiguous side to it.
Have we not cheered for Robin Hood to steal from the rich and give to the poor? And were we not all happy when Fenris ripped Danarius' heart from his chest?
Rape, there is nothing cool or ambiguous about it. It's just sick.

the Inquisitor would have to watch his/her back around them!

Ah, lovely.

No. It'd just be plain stupid.

Remember how the feminist brigade responded to the Laura Croft trailer that only SUGGESTED at rape? It'd be a nightmare. We don't need any more nightmares.

You can kill plenty of innocents in games. Some games even allow you to kill children... there's nothing ambiguous about killing innocents in video games or running them over, which a lot of video games allow. Seems like moral dissonance to me.
