ME 2 was a great game, but in terms of the plot, it was the mother of all sidequests.
What are the main problems people have with ME2?

You're opening an old and healed wound bud. I had no problems, only the fact that the interior of the Normandy looked like a floating 1950s clinicohaithere wrote...
I don't understand, it seems like people just nitpick.
edit: Oh!! Almost forgot, the probing of the planets was annoying and way to time-consuming

Actually, Leviathan and From Ashes DLCs could have made Mass Effect 2 complete.
There would have not been a need for Mass Effect 3.
So, no, I don't have a problem with Mass Effect 2.

I personally don't mind. The main plot was never the highlight for me. In fact, the Reaper plot always struck me as the weakest aspect. If Bioware wanted to make a large, expansive universe, why put all the focus on a single plot thread? ME2's focus on shorter, more personal side stories was its biggest strength in my opinion.

The lack of central focus in the Collector plot seems to be the biggest complaint.

While I agree with you that ME2's story is better because it has character focus, I think it could have remained character-focused while going for more depth instead of width. Half the characters, twice the loyalty missions would have made for a better story, in my opinion.

Mass Effect 3 fixed most of these issues with the shared morality meter, the emphasis on increasing it through missions and the improved Renegade script. The funny thing is, nearly all of Mass Effect 3s big persuasion options were based on past choices, so the change wasn't even that necessary.

The big problem with ME2 is that it forces ME3 to have to resolve a LOT of the storyline all in one game.
You can damn near literally remove ME2 ENTIRELY, and not impact the central plot of stopping the reapers in the slightest. The story of ME2 spins its wheels and goes exactly nowhere fast.
I actually think ME3 would have worked a lot better as a direct sequel to ME1. The whole Synthetics vs Organics stuff would have made more sense as a central theme, and generally I'd say ME3 Cerberus fit better with ME1 Cerberus.
ME2 could have been placed before ME1, and with a few tweaks in the dialogue it would have made just as much sense. ME2 has pretty much all the same setting dynamics as ME1: the Alliance is alone and its frontier in danger the face of an unprovoked but advanced alien threat. The Council refuses to help for fears of the Terminus. The task for chasing down the threat rests on one team operating outside of the law.
Rather than knowing that the Reapers are out there and focusing on the Collectors, the Collectors could have been the lead-in to the Reapers themselves: without even uttering the word 'Reaper', we're left to mystify why the last of the Protheans are abducting us and making a vessel out of us (like, we presume, they did to themselves). Come ME1-now-ME2, Liara's revelation that the Protheans are part of a cycle, not the cause of their own absence, becomes the Reaper Plot Development that makes us realize how big the threat really is.
I've thought about that a bit after someone either here, or on r/me mentioned that. And it's kind of funny as you said, how much better that would have worked out. As it stands, ME2 does nothing really to advance the plot, and it does just feel like one giant side mission. I still love it though, the characterization is great.

The games flaws get overlooked by a lot of players because the overall product was liked by them, ME3's flaws would also be overlooked had the ending met player expectations.

Also, it really annoyed me that shepard died and joined cerberus, just didnt make any sense it once again it destroyed the flow on from the original game.
Another thing is that spectres count for NOTHING at all in me2, unbelievable.
So basically, the game couldnt of started and ended any worse.

Right.
I really don't get why people have issues with ME2. ME1 and ME2 are masterpieces. Simple.
If you beleive ME2's plot didn't move the reaper conflict along, that's because of ME3. ME3 makes what you learn and do in ME3 not mater, because in the end there's nothing you can do. There's only 3 endings and you need Deus Ex Machina to defeat the reapers. All you need to do is play some multiplayer to defeat the reapers.
If taken as a standalone game, ME3 is actually decent.
It fails if you played ME1, and ME2.
"Best time to jump in". Nuff said.

I thought so too, but after watching Leviathan it explained why the human Reaper was being created. It did seem silly back then but never destroyed it.

Damn, ME2 is amazing. No wonder it won like 40 GOTY awards. I think the most since Half Life 2 or something. I think I want to go back and play as a vanguard from ME2. I've only played as a soldier, infiltrator and soldier. ME2 is spectacular.

Played it 21x. It has the best replay value out of the trilogy and many different combinations for different endings.

It was an obvious and silly retcon though. Why do they need an "inner reaper"?
Also they dont explain why the human reaper was being constructed BEFORE the reapers invaded. What was the rush? why couldnt they wait until they invaded.
There were never any answers, it just seemed like ME2 was all over the place and they screwed up the story bigtime at some point and couldnt go back.

All types, Infiltrator was my fav.
Full Paragon / Renegade.
Wrex dead
Kaiden / Ashley alive
No upgrades
No Loyalty
Only ME1 squad alive
Perfect ending
Shepard dead
A bunch of different ones.
And ME3 only 2 playthroughs. The first one and then one for EC.
