Let me ask you all a question.

Is Final Fantasy 7 an RPG?

I wonder how many people will answer correctly.

No idea...never played it....just seen enough to know I don't like the graphics and combat style...am very fussy about those....:?

Wait a sec?! Mass Effect 3 is NOT a RPG?? What else has Bioware lied about?

StayFrosty05 was just trying to get more people to read the thread. Kinda cheesy, but we see worse here every day.

Just tapping into some disgruntled opinions I have seen plaenty of on BSN....:P

The way I see it Mass Effect 1 has the most RPG elements, then Mass Effect 2.

Lastly, ME3.

With ME2, it was frustrating and linear in character development until I cottoned onto the console modifying of the Para/Ren bars....filling them both, leaving me with all choices at my disposal...the game really came into itself and was a blast....felt like I could sink my teeth in almost as much as ME1 for a lot of RP opportunites....really mixed up the Para, Neutral and Ren options....console breathed a lot of life in ME2 for me....^_^

I disagree Jade. Dialog is only one part of an rpg, and it's the only good thing mE2 had compared to ME and ME3 better in every other department. Dialog is important but you can't judge an rpg just on that, you have to judge on all elements. ME2 was the most streamline in gameplay that just had the benefit of a good dialog system (though ME2 still had laot of auto dialog that hurtt he game, which peopel seem to ignore. Hell, LOTSB is well loved, yet that was the start of heavy focus on auto dialog.

It is an RPG.

Genre's evolve overtime, ME3 is what the "Sci-fi RPG" has evolved into.

Not saying it is good (I, as most of the civilized world, dislike change).

the RPG Genre has been changing for years, its not classic RPG, but this is what RPGs have become.

"There is only one thing that does not change in this world, and that is the fact things will always change"

I beg to differ....ME3 evolved into just another linear story shooter...preset characters, relationships, etc....

Mass Effect 3 is as much an RPG as Black Ops 2 is an RPG. Both games offer customization, optional side missions and the ocassional choice that will effect the outcome of the story. While I do enjoy the improved gameplay mechanics since ME1, I would have preferred if BW had focused on developing and improving its RPG elements.

Thank you Bioware for not letting me tell TIM the real reason I won't give him the base and instead give me a line that makes the line you just qouted look AAA writing.

LOL.......I didn't click until you wrote that as to why I dislike LotSB so much....that's it....:o...I played it through a few times, didn't like, so only ended up doing it for games I planned to export to ME3...and now that I have played ME3 through, I don't do LotSB at all.

I think that's a problem as well, it was praised to be better than the game itself - which I find problematic, I loved the banter dialogue, the little tidbits to the ME2 characters, etc, that's what made it memorable for me, not removing neutral dialogue and having such limited interactivity with my Shepard.

I only have an issue with auto-dialogue when it interferes with my Shepard. In battle dialogue doesn't tend to do that, it's the words that come out between the sparse options on the tree

The funny thing as I suspect you are pointing out about RPGs is: there's always someone that can claim their game is more of an RPG, all the way back to tabletop dice-throwers.

Tabletop RPGers look down on text-based RPGers look down on CRPGers look down on ME1 fans look down on ME3 fans.

Pretty much.

The term "RPG" at this point means next to nothing.  Try to pin down a consensus on what defines an RPG.  Get three people together and you'll get 5 opinions.

Even the sparse options on the tree....eg. After Thessia, option a) you can be upset with Joker, option B) you can be upset with Joker....<_<....My choice once I found that out, stay the heck away from Joker....

I quite enjoy the Battle dialog....^_^

. I don't have an issue with Liaea and Shepard arguing about tech.  I have an issue when I become Alliance fanboy

I think we can all agree, Bioware should have sticked with ME formula, though I can't deny, I do love Shepard banter and saying stuff during combat like in LOTSB and ME3 missions. Of course it could also be it kinda fits my Shepard and the issue here is not everyones Shepard was the same, which Bioware forgot in ME2 and ME3.

*I'm not a fan of auto dialog in conversations though, unless it's filler crap.*

Tbh, I thought ME2 was close to perfect, I never felt like I lost control of my Shepard and there was a good amount of auto-dialogue mind you, but it was mostly used in situations where Shepard would start a conversation, like during Thane's recruitment mission and Nassana. Now, I know this isn't the same case for everyone and I understand that, but overall - I found that the interruptions, the the dialogue felt great. I used to save before talking to people, just to see the different outcomes, especially staying neutral with Jack, Shepard and Jack both come out expressing themselves differently, compared to Paragon and Renegade (where he would either sound too "fix-her" (which I wasn't trying to achieve) or too "not me".

I felt that you only need two playthroughs with ME3 to get the full gist, compared to ME1 and 2. Also, renegade Shepard felt a bit... I don't know out-of-place with a lot of the auto-dialogue and my Shepard was a neutral-paragon mindset.... so.

Rambling.

. ME3's paragon bias kind of wrecked my Shepard in some points.

When did choice become a defining feature of RPGs?

I've seen games classified as RPGs that give you **** all choice as to what to do, where to go, or hell, even WHEN to go do it.
