Shapeshifter seems to be an unpopular specialization for mages, so I've been working under the assumption that I'm better off with Morrigan casting offensive spells than turning into a spider. Am I wrong? It occurred to me that when dealing with big mobs, maybe the spider webs would come in handy?
Is there any point in using Morrigan's spider form?

no, the spider has a web which could be useful for CC< but built right, morrigan has enough CC to not have to worry about the web

all the shapeshifting forms are useless. respec her to remove the points in that and put them somewhere useful is my advice (i still leave her as a shapeshifter for roleplaying purposes, i just don't give her any spells in it).
Edit: technically I don't respec her, because I don't let the game assign my companions points anywhere, I do it myself when I get them. But you can respec her.

Morrigan is an excellent offensive spell caster if you put points all of herspells related to fire; the firebaal spell is quicker to cast;the Inferno spell is devastating, especilled when the enemy is packed together; just be careful to keep your party out of the way. In face let your party use their bows while she's doing one of the fire spells; also put skill incone of cold and blizzard. These atre much better than shapeshifting.[ Also, give her a heal spell, you'll find Morrigan very formidable.

If the shapeshifting worked the way it is supposed to (implied from the Sacred Ashes video), it would be a viable specialization. However, it is broken. Forms should be insta-cast and use your spellpower as your combat stats. Right now, they are, I think, 10 second casts and use your strength as the main combat stat.

correct. but there's a mod that will fix the cast time for pc users. it doesn't fix the strength/magic problem - nor does it make up for the pathetic abilities you have while changed. you can't cast, you can't tank (not well, anyway). you're basically useless.

Well, if it was instant cast, you could shift, overwhelm, shift out, which would be fairly useful, but as is shapeshifting is pretty terrible. The bug form is pretty fast for running around, though (only reason I ever turn on haste.)

ShapeShifting is useless;focus on the offensive spells.

It's for amusement value only. I like to run around Denerim with my pet giant spider.

Well, before the patch increasing regen, I found Spider form useful in long fights when you're out of mana. The cast time is pretty killer, though, by the time you get done shifting and use an ability you could have already regenned enough mana to cast something.

I went the cold route and tossed in a heal spell for her. I typically cast cone of cold, blizzard, sleep, horror/nightmares, the cold blast spell and mind blast in close combat. I usually lead off with a freeze after setting up tele. weapons before combat. I then watch mana and heal. I just got group heal at level 16 and haven't used it yet. I went heal spec with her. It has paid off. I wish I would have done it earlier.
What do you all think about will power. I am plus 40 if not 50 in magic, can't remember, should i increase willpower? Benefits for doing so?

I used shapeshifting on morrigan early game when she would be low on mana and I didn't have rejuvinate or want to use a potion. Later on, though, it became less useful.

I only really used Shapeshifting once I'd unlocked the last ability since it really boosts the effectiveness of the beast forms (the CGI looked much like a Dire Spider using the Overwhelm ability). Didn't bother in games where I'd given Morrigan the Arcane Warrior specialisation. Either way, I think she's more use casting disabling spells to support the party's warriors.

not unless you respec morrigan and give morrigan only strength and some dex later in the game.
shapeshifters damage depends on the weapon you are useing atm.
you could go staff damage i suppose but the damage of a staff is small. 0.33 per spellpower with that tier 3 arcane staff skill. only atvantage with a staff is that you do not miss.

Question, just out of curiosity. If you're shapeshifter+AW build, do you get to substitute your magic power for str in shapeshifting form? How is damage calculated in that form, anyway?

In a pinch the bear is quite powerful, I have finished some battles off quite nicely with Morrigan as a bear as the character(s) being attacked by her usually become stunned leaving the other characters to provide max damage

No, don't bother. Get:
Blizzard
Tempest
Crushing Prison
Affliction Hex
Sleep
Mana Clash
For general all-around damage dealing. If I was playing as a PC mage, however, I'd also get Glyph of Replusion, Virulent Walking Bomb and Stinging Swarm, and I'd ignore Sleep and Mana Clash.

if you want the best lategame character you're better off with a shapeshifter-arcane warrior combo.
i mean 90% dodge, missle immunity, spell immunity and a high defence is a pain to face. dagger dagger flying swarm.
Be glad you never face such powerful characters in the singleplayer campaign.
it can solo most player based parties.
only reason to go aw for a shapeshifter is to get +1 dex and +5 attack.
staff based shapeshifters do less damage . combat magic is needed to replace strength with magic and no magic can be used while you are shapeshifted in dragon age origins.
exspansion may change alot.
