Can I say I hate how Tevinters look? I mean, they look like Sith wannabees...
Do we really want to simplify an entire culture to "dark, dangerous and mysterious?"

Reminds me of Venetian dress more than anything.

But whatever, they're from hot topic I guess.

All of the outfits are very derivative though.

^^^ Thedas borrows too much from the "real world" with these setting. Be it a fantasy world it borrows too much from our timeline to be said to be fantasy world which can timejump when ever designers feel like it. At least for me (a history buff) this jump is a eye sore and not consistent with the overall time frame.

I don't see how it could offend your historical sensibilities when it's not misreporting any aspect of actual history, and actual history has no relevence. Events, up to and including the invention of various technologies, can happen whenever the writers want them to.

Thats why I was talking about of my own perspective. I never have been much of a fan of the renaissance anyway, too much white powder on mens faces.

@KnightofPheonix: Are you aware of basic writing concepts? I believe there's a paragraph break in between my comment about Tevinter being evil... and them being loosely based on the eastern Roman empire. That's suppose to imply two separate thoughts.

((the new paragraph means I'm no longer referencing you KnightofPheonix)) We have no reference for who these characters are - if they're nobility, then I find the opulence fitting. I personally would have used a blue and purple pallet - instead of what appears to be blue and green.

And those outfits look pretty tame to me - I'm not well versed in fashion, but it seems to me that only our modern era has been concerned with practicality in fashion... well, unless you consider the ancient world who just threw cloth around them.

These just don't seem like your average shop keeper - they seem iconic.

But still, as for Tevinter - there's no indication of Tevinter's "complexity" - it's always been portrayed as an insular empire of slavekeeping blood mages. It's the forum goers who try to make Tevinter into something it's never been shown to be.

And how do we know which one represents Tevinter... if any?  The bottom set - which seems more traditionally "Byzantine" - could be the Tevinter.  Unless I missed some caption labelling them.

Edit: Anyways, I'm not sure why every culture has to dress like their "real" counterpart. Tevinter is loosely based on the eastern roman empire, not copied wholesale. And this is concept art, does anyone but me remember Zevran concept art?

I like them very much, although I'm not quite sure how the balloon gowns would translate in-game, technically speaking (collision etc...).

One thing I'm not going to do is overthinking this and compare them to historical clothing, Star Wars or whatever. As for their practicality in regard to combat and the like, they're obviously everyday clothes. I also find the Orlesian ones pretty tame compared to the very decadent, complex and outrageous things I imagined.

@Herr Uhl: Thank you - I figured everyone saying they were the Tevinters meant I was missing something - so I spent most of my post assuming they were.

I like them - and stressed "loosely" in my first post on this thread.

People seem to want jeans and a t-shirt. *shrugs*

DA:O had a few indications that could be read as Tevinter not being quite so bad.  But this resulted in people bringing it up as an example of why free mages might not be so bad which seemed to annoy the writers, and DA2 decided to sledgehammer Tevinter = EVIL

I think they are all wonderful and hope to see some of the fashions represented in the game.

Since I'm assuming the people wearing these outfits won't be doing any fighting, it shouldn't be that hard. Bulging cloth, like the Orlesian and Tevinter skirts, can be a little quirky if they enable cloth physics for them, but even that shouldn't be an issue if the people wearing them don't see combat(or if the animations are more like DA:O than 2, for that matter).

I'm not terribly fond of the male Tevinter's raised hood, but I like them otherwise. More national flair is never a bad thing.

The Tevinter chick is wearing MAGE PANTS! Greatest game ever? CONFIRMED.

She's also wearing like a skirt cloak thing. Mind? BLOWN.

I personally like the concepts even if they are over the top in some parts.

Actually the over-the-top parts shouldn't worry us that much, 3D models have their limitations and that Tevinter female dress is bound to end up being less "fabulous".

Anyone remembers the conceptart for Desire Demons?

So yeah, nice concept art but I wouldn't expect a direct translation into the game.

That was one of the things I hated about DA2, it had a massive Mages= Subhuman trash who get possessed and murder everything vibe going on.

Granted, Tevinter does have a Black Chantry/Black Divine.... so maybe that's the reason they dress in black? To reflect and embrace the mocking name the White Chantry gave them?

I don't mind if priests dress like that. But if the common folk or even the nobility dress like that (and my beef is more the black / hood combo than the black)? Well it's meh. Might as well point an arrow saying they are bad, which had been how they were consistently portrayed in both DA:O and DA2.

I think it'll be reserved for the nobility and others in the heirarchy. I don't see commoners wearing that. Look at it in comparison to the couple from Orlais. In Asunder, Gaider goes into detail on how they all wear masks at social gatherings... kind of reminds me of Dishonoured...without the wacky designs.

Yeah. I don't like it. It's too much. Over the top if you will. All flash and no substance.

Remember how Leliana described Orlais? How everything was opulent and the nobles were always trying to one-up each other in the fashion department? I'll be disappointed if Dragon Age 3's aesthetic doesn't jibe with this idea of it being a colourful, extravagant place. Ferelden being drab is fine, but not Orlais or Orlesians. So yeah, I completely disagree with you.

Dragon Age concept art has always been good, we will see how it is implemented once there is more info in the game.

As for these shown above, I am more of a fan of toned down stuff where the details are on the textures and the style rather than how much attachments you place in your clothing, but I like them.

Love the Orlesian stuff, it's exactly how I imagined it.

The other two designs leave something to be desired however. Whatever happened to the famous Fereldan sense of practicality over style? And while I do like the basic design of the Tevinter clothes, the woman's outfit looks a little to Oriental for me, and the colours just scream, "Look at me, I'm EVIL!"

Bioware is trying to re-invent DA's art style again? Oh boy. I wonder how many features Qunari will have after this one. Maybe dwarves will have horns now, too!
