After beating Mass Effect 2, which was beyond spectacular in so many ways, I went on to play Mass Effect 3 for the second time. The first playthrough I recall having a decent experience, except for the obvious dissapointments in storytelling, mechanics, and the ending. This time however, I've come to see Mass Effect 3 as a complete failure on Bioware's part, and I'm hardly half an hour in - I don't even think I can bear to continue. What Mass Effect 1/2 had built is completely discarded, and to a certain extent spat on, by Mass Effect 3. Not only does it feature shortcomings in gameplay (which is indicative of a rushed game), but it also features a poorly developed story.

Playing Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 was an incredible experience as they are both well created. While Mass Effect 2's story was a llittle bit subpar compared to that of the orignial's (mainly because we've been thouroughly introduced to the Universe already), it compensates with a wide variety of characters whom are unique and well designed in addition to the (expected) gameplay enhancements. It is apparent that the developers took time in creating them as their engines were consistent and polished, something not seen in Mass Effect 3's weird running animation, non-existant recoil, lame cover physics, etc..

One may argue that there are so many epic moments in Mass Effect 3 that are unparalled by any other Mass Effect game (and dare I say any other story-focused game), but I've come to the conclusion that these were all inveitablities, as in, they were going to happen no matter what, and so we really don't experience a great deal of what the writers could've done; instead we're left with expected scenarios that are not enamored by the skilled team of the Mass Effect franchise.
For example, in Mass Effect 2, something completely unexpected ( I cannot emphasize it enough) happens: you die. Afterwards you're adopted by a mysterious faction that rebuilds you and enlists you as one of its highest operatives. In Mass Effect 3, we see no such surprise. The vast majority of everything that occurs is expected, and little content holds imagination or expresses good use of Bioware's "artistic integrity". The ending, on the contrary, is very unexpected, but, how wellw as it made? Not incredibly. I'm not going to go on a rant about that (despite having a great desire to) because that's all apparent to everyone.

I must ask the question: if EA gave them another year to develop (meaning that it would be released March 5th of this year) , do you think that the majority of these shortcomings would have been avoided, yielding one of the best Sci-fi games ever produced?

I see this thread as a summation of all other ME3 concerns, and hope that it reaches the attention of Bioware.

What do y'all think?

Yes but why aren't they doing anything about it? They can't just let the Shepard trilogy end like this..

Why would they? Do they not care about the fans anymore?

+1 let's just say, OP, you are not the first to say that. (I love the game, but yes, it does not live up to ME2

better late than never, and I even found yet another disappointment that runs throughout the entire trilogy...am I the only one who has noticed that the default female Shepard looks, sounds and acts a lot like a certain Director Shepard from the NCIS television series?

Unfortunately they haven't done anything about it (excluding the extended cut, which was very poorly made).

I suppose at the end of the day I'm just surprised that they would release something to the public that was so underdeveloped, and am trying to get a reasonable explanation from a rep.

I like ME3 but I do agree with some of your points to some extent, and I really do wish that EA had given them longer to develop.

I would have to agree, Mass Effect 3 is more fun than Mass Effect 2, but I like all three games in the trilogy equally, that is why every time I do a new run I start all over with ME1. It just never gets old, and I can choose to do things differently each time. At least Mass Effect 3 tied up loose ends from ME1 and ME2 (Conrad Verner, the asteroid aimed at Terra Nova by that batarian merc in ME1, and the the list goes on and on). Not to mention that there are so many different characters from ME1 and ME2 who import into ME3 if you carry your saved character across all three games like I always do. It also helps to complete all of those little side missions, and do whatever it takes to keep everybody alive in the final mission of ME2. So, like you said, I don't find Mass Effect 3 to be a disappointment at all, except for the ending, but I fixed that by downloading and installing the Mass Effect 3 Happy Ending Mod. If interested you can find it listed in the Mass Effect 3 fan creations forum threads.

@OP I disagree with your opinion, and even more with the insults that you made to the developers (like saying the EC was poorly made). How about you put a little thought into how they would see such comment, given the chance to read it?
Of course that excluding the upcoming Citadel DLC, nothing more will be added anyway - no, your thread is not special and will not reach the attention of BioWare in the way you seems to intend, since they already collected the feedback to the last DLC.

I can't wait to see what that Mass Effect 3: Citadel DLC is going to be like. The Leviathan and Omega DLC's were a lot of fun to play, and I am hopeful that the Citadel DLC will be just as much fun, but I'll be happy if all it does is add more places to the citadel that you can visit.

It may have been a disappointment for you, but it wasn't for me. It did feel rushed in some places. The games ends poorly without the dlc. And it features one of the worst antagonists I've ever had the displeasure of seeing, Kai Leng.

I can't seem to put one Mass Effect game ahead of another. Not to long ago I was saying that Mass Effect 2 was the best of the three and my favorite game I've ever played. But then I played Mass Effect 3 again and realized that it is overall just as good, if not better. Each game has something about them that makes them spectacular, therefore I like all three games as whole. There's no playing one of the games without playing the other two.

Well, I really can't say that I agree with your perspective as while the other two express strengths, the third expresses weakness.

In story, Mass Effect was the best as it was the most well developed, involving an interesting villian and featuring a well-designed world to be immersed in. However when it came to combat, it expressed many shortcomings. In the end, the story was so overwhelmingly above the minor faults that the game set the foundation for its sequels.

In combat, Mass Effect 2 took the spotlight as it was able to revolutionize the way we play Mass Effect, which again was expected. This was paralleled by its story, which was admittedly subpar, because again they had to work off of less, but featured many unique and innovative elements that were able to captivate the player.

In story, Mass Effect 3 is weak, as it, again, describes only inevitablities and fails to innovate and deviate from what was already expected. Similarly in comabt, Mass Effect 3 shows further weakness in its poor design, particularly the animations and abundance of technical atrocities.

While I do give Bioware credit for trying to reach the deadline set by money-loving EA, I cannot support the way they went about ending their opus.

synthesis ending .. control ending
your pissing on everything shepard fought for ... if synthesis is your choice of ending than maybe bioware should release a patch for mass effect which enables shepard to let saren activate the citadel relay..... and if control is your choice of ending than bioware should release a patch for mass effect 3 which lets shepard throw his guns in with cerberus and you spend your game raiding colonies , rounding up civilians and sending them to sanctuary

and the destroy ending .. they couldn't show shepard alive and reunited with his crew.... and the refusal ending ... so because we didn't like they're bullshlt green blue red options they give us a you fail ending .... just disappointing .... how could they have f'd it up so badly ...

I wanted things to be changed about the ending at release. They decided they'd listen to fan requests. I played the extended cut and I found it to be on the borderline of making me OK with the resolution. Still unsatisfied.

And now they've announced now there will be no more DLC, and that this it. No sequel. Nothing.

...at a certain point, it's time to give up hope and move on to a new hobby if you can't enjoy Mass Effect anymore.

What will still caring and being invested do?

I respect your opinion, but I don't agree with it at all. To me ME2's story was a very gimmick and silly one compared to the others. I prefer ME3 in almost every single way, except for the more diverse dialogue system.

"No sequel, Nothing"

I think you underestimate Bioware; I think as developers, they listen and learn. It's obviously hard to listen to millions of voices expressing ideas and opinions, but I think they are trying to make a good gaming experience for as many people as possible. Not an easy task!

When Mass Effect 4 comes along, I'll bet a lot of M.E fans will be apprehensive/anxious about how that new trilogy will end - I'm looking forward to where they will take the series and just enjoy the journey, as I did with ME1,2&3.
