 Now this might already have been an idea, but the next Mass Effect should take place before sometime before the reaper invasion as.....

Mass Effect: Cerberus !!!
Where you are a cerberus agent that goes on missions and assembles a squad of alien badasses.
This also creates plausible possibilities of Miranda, the illusive man, mordin (when you meet him in ME2 he said he has run ins with cerberus), and jacob and kai leng and others I cant think of at the moment reappearing.
Maybe you can even be the person who was involved with the capture of admiral kahoku in ME1.
Maybe some missions can give a background on some of the crazy experiments shepard stumbled upon in ME1.

The gameplay and customization could also be improved by making a secondary level up system that focuses on combat& physical augmentations that apply to new gameplay options like being stealthy, a melee fighter, a regular shooter, or a bullet sponge, or mixes.
The powers tree should be able to stay intact.

since cerberus likes advanced technology, dangerous missions and secrecy, there would be so many angles the writers could work the story on.

Too much painful memories in having your old squadmates in your squad again. Also, Cerberus is a human organisation. I don't believe that they want to "assemble a squad of alien badasses". Only reason there were any aliens in your squad in ME2 is that it made Shepard feel more comfortable to have all the old faces around.
