This question might of been asked before but I've been out of the gaming scene for a few years so I'm out of touch.

Somehow I found dragon age and I was blown away by how the game was. NEVER played an RPG like this before.

Mind you, last good rpg I've been playing has been in the final fantasy. series.

In today's world, how does this game compare to other ones?

Are there other ones which are similar?

this is the best rpg ive played in a LONG time. The last one I liked as much as DA was maybe..Morrowing and Neverwinter Nights.

I can't think of a recent rpg(next-gen) that's come close to Dragon Age, but then again, it is the newest one, and therefore it is expected to be better than those that came before.

This game is by far the best RPG I've played in a long time. I'm having the problem now where every time I think I should play another game, it just doesn't seem any good compared to Dragon Age. Even other games that are getting really good reviews. I've resorted to playing casual games like Peggle that are in a completely different genre than Dragon Age, as those are the only games that still seem any good after playing DA:O.

The last PC RPG that I played where had a similar problem after finishing it was Neverwinter Nights 2. It's similar, though developed by Obsidian, and it uses the D&D 3.5 rules. It also has a very in-depth story with strong characters and lots of room to play different types of characters. Plus it's got 2 expansions, a premium module, and many third-party modifications available now.

Other games that are similar are pretty much any of BioWare's past games. Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect seem the most similar to me based on how they are played (and I assume Mass Effect 2 will be similar when it's released later this month). Both have well developed stories and characters, and you basically control your main guy and let the rest of your party do their own thing. Neverwinter Nights 1, and the old Baldur's Gate series are also excellent, though the story and characters in Neverwinter Nights 1 weren't quite as good as the other games I mentioned. I never really got into Jade Empire, so I'm not sure how it compares.

The Witcher by CD Projekt Red is also excellent and has quite a bit of depth to it, but it didn't quite capture my interest as much as DA:O or NWN2 did.

That's most of the RPG's that I can think of right now with really strong stories that are similar to DA:O. Japanese RPG's like Final Fantasy and Xenosaga have excellent stories, but don't really have the same character depth, and have a very different style of gameplay, and most of the current PC RPG's are mindless monster squishing loot fests, or open-ended worlds to explore where the main story tends to get lost as you wander around staring at the trees.

In terms of story-telling, Dragon Age is right up there with the very best. It's certainly the closet I've found to the feel of a real P&P campaign experience in a computer game. I enjoy the tactical/statistical combat of the old BG-style games more than DAO's "actiony" approach, but that's an engine issue. In terms of power and depth of narrative, characterization and "setting" (a small word for a huge job when the genre is scifi or fantasy), IMO, Dragon Age really is almost a one-off.

(OP mentioned Final Fantasy. As with some others who've given opinions like mine, I'm leaving JRPGs out of the conversation. They were never designed with the intention of reproducing a human-run P&P experience or attempting to creating fantasy narrative in the shadow of Tolkein.)

DA is currently top of my list (with the exception of (most of) the Ultima Series, which will always be my first love).

I recommend Jade Empire, which is also very good. And before that would be Baldur's Gate 2. I must admit I haven't played an extensive list of games though, and I tend to be picky about what qualifies as a 'true' RPG.

In terms of comparing it to RPGs that I've played recently that are NEW (i.e. from the last 2 years or newer) DA:O is the best RPG I've played. But comparing it to my still favorite games of all time (Among which are Planescape: Torment, Fallout, and Baldur's Gate 1 and 2), DA:O comes in at a close, decent, but slightly dissapointing 6th place behind Baldur's Gate 2, Baldur's Gate 1, Planescape Torment, Fallout and Fallout 2. It is ahead of KOTOR, Jade Empire and Mass Effect, but it didn't give Baldur's Gate 2 a run for its money as I hoped it would.

It's still a fantastic game, and it's certainly the best next-gen game that I've played, but it didn't capture the magic that I so reveled in (and still revel in) when I first played (and whenever I play) Baldur's Gate 2 or Planescape: Torment. While it certainly is great, it suffers from many of the "Next-Gen Woes" that so many other games of the past few years do. It was closer to perfection than any other RPG that's come out since 2002, but it didn't reach the perfection that Baldur's Gate 2, Planescape Torment or classics like the Ultimas series reached. And that was very dissapointing, especially after waiting nearly 5 years for the game.

But that doesn't make it a bad game. It's a great game. It's just not as great as it should have been. But it certainly blew other games out of the water that claim to be RPG's like Bioshock and Fallout 3.

In order:

Baldur's Gate 2

Fallout 2 (I prefer the openness of the second)

Fallout

Baldur's Gate

Dragon Age:Origins

NWN1 (this high because of the community, not the game itself)

Morrowind

KotOR

The Witcher

Mask of the Betrayer (the only part of NWN2 I'll rate)

Fallout 3

The Sith Lords (would be much higher if it was finished)

I'm not huge on PS:T because I thought the pacing was turgid. I tried Drakensang, but I was disappointed. I wish I'd never paid for NWN2: Storm of Zethyr, that was a debacle. Icewind Dale 1&2 were good, but not good enough to be on this list.

The best three RPGs I have played before DA are Baldur's Gate II, Neverwinter Nights 1 and Star Wars, KOTOR 1. Since they ALL are from Bioware too, it doesn't really surprise me that DA is up on par with them. And since all others in that list are considerably older than DA and none of them ever found a worthy successor (yes, Obsidian, that pun was very much intended), DA will wear the "currently best RPG" crown for a while, as far as I am concerned. With a multiplayer mode, it would replace NWN1 as the best RPG of all times for me, even.

i stopped playing CRPG after throne of bhaal, to much distraction from console rpg JRPG mainly and lots of adventure games on the PC. When i heard about DA:O being the "successor of Baldur's Gate" i thought interesting amd start playing it. after finishing my 2nd playthrough, i'm trying to bactrack many years of CRPG i've passed (bethesda, bioware, black isle, etc). BIG MISTAKE (i should play everything before DA:O)

imo, the only thing that beats DA:O is Baldur's Gate as a whole (trilogy), and i must say that bioware CRPG can only be compare with bioware.

Best "next-generation" RPG is Mass Effect in my opinion. It remains to be seen if ME 2 will be able to top that, DA definitely hasn't. Other than that, Fallout 3 with mods and of course BG 2 are also superior to DA. Lately I think KotoR 1 was better too, but with some great mods for DA being released, that may change again.

Excluding some jrpg which i don't like at all, i played pretty much every relevant rpg since 1988 to present and i have to say that DA is way superior to everything ever made with no exception (otherwise i wouldn't have finished it five times).

Among my all-time favourites are:

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines (after patch fixing game breaking bug... the one most thrilling to me)

Dragon Age: Origins (acting, animation, tactical battles the best of all RPGs, story is great)

Mass Effect (even as RPG-light the story, some decisions and scenes moved me more than DAO)

Neverwinter Nights (still very high, mostly because of awesome Community modules)

Knights of the Old Republic (the best SW game until now, great writing.)

Neverwinter Nights 2 (technically more advanced than NWN, better Companion interaction)

Jade Empire (great story and good fighting, NWN2 higher because of expansions + community)

The Witcher (hard to rate, since only 1 chapter finished so far, high potential, GFX a little bit blurry)

Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption (I liked it, story, system, setting...)

Morrowind (well made, but then again somehow not as much thrilling, than I thought.)

(edit) KotOR II:  (While writing and ideas have quite some appeal, the bugs and unfinished state spoiled my fun.)

Not included, because not played yet:
Fallout 3, Oblivion, Risen (Demo played, but pales before DAO in almost every aspect), Drakensang (Demo played, perhaps I buy it in the future, but after played DAO the Drakensang animations, voice acting, story appear wooden, insipid, ...), Gothic series

Games older than KotOR not included. BG series not played, BT series too old, Planescape Torment (where can I get a copy?), Fallout 1&2, Wasteland, Pool of Radiance (Available also as Mods for NWN/NWN2!)

In no particular order:

DA:O

BG1 and 2

Mass Effect

Planescape Torment

Divinity 2 Ego Draconis

TES2: Daggerfall

Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines

Played others like Oblivion and Neverwinter Nights but those are the ones I actually like the most and which I class as 'proper' RPGs as opposed to games like Diablo (which I like, but wouldn't classify as the same type of game) or Final Fantasy (interactive novels =/= roleplay) or MMOs. The ones I'm currently playing are DA:O (of course) and Divinity 2 (quite a nice game, well written).

I just wouldn't compare games. There are great games out there, all RPG even if the gameplay and mechanics are way different than DA:O. A couple of new ones I played to exhaustion is The Witcher EE and Risen (oct/09 release by the Gothic's devs). Both are awesome games. I salute diversity as the best thing in games.

I just add that DA:O is the best PC RPG ever, for me, and I played a whole lot of them, most of what is listed above. I can't comment on console-only though. I've never had one and don't intend to!

I recently started playing Neverwinter Nights and am still playing Dragon Age as well. I was very surprised at how good Neverwinter Nights is turning out to be, and it makes Dragon Age's flaws stand out. In NWN it is based on D&D system so there are tons of variety in choices for your character. Dragon Age' system has 3 choices of classes, and a very limited set of skills and spells to choose from. The graphics in NWN are primitive by todays standards, and I tend to be a graphics fan boy, but I noticed the longer I play NWN the more I am appreciating the graphics and getting used to its graphical style, which has its own elegance and imagination.

There is such a different feeling in NWN in terms of the world, it is much more a magical fantasy atmosphere than DA, which is slanted towards more of a medieval setting. And the exploration in NWN is so much vaster in scope, there is a definite feeling of discovery as you explore the huge dungeons and city. Dragon Age feels so limited by comparison, with tiny cramped areas where there is one path to follow in a straight linear fashion. And most of the monsters in Dragon Age are variations of Darkspawn , which get boring. In NWN, they have tons of variety in the monsters, with imaginative creatures like Dryad, Yuan- TI, Intellect devourer and tons more.

Also, in Dragon Age, I can get that feeling of boredom settling in and don't want to keep playing or finish after a time of playing it, whereas I notice in NWN I am anxious to play and have that compelling feeling that I want to play it for hours upon end. In other words, the fun factor is so much more potent in NWN I am finding.

I don't think Dragon Age measures up to either Baldurs Gate trilogy or NWN, which are among the best rpgs ever made. I would put Dragon Age as a "good" rpg but nothing like Hall of Fame or classic material.

Anyway, Dragon Age is a good game, but IMHO does not approach the hype level given to it.

DA:O is up with the best cRPG, but that might be because it's from the most consistant western cRPG studio! Even many of the other really good cRPGs are build on their engines (NWN2, The Witcher)

imho

Planecape Torment

BG1

BG2

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines

DA:O

ME

Fallout 3

Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption

Jade Empire

NWN 2

Of the games I really liked they might be considered in groups. One can see, I tend to prefer "open world simulator" & non-linear to "Hollywood set" & linear -- but, that is not hard and fast.

BG1, Gothic 2, KotOR, Fallout 3, Oblivion are in the first group (not in order).

Two Worlds, Fallout, KotOR2, Gothic 3, Morrowind in the second group (not in order).

Dragon Age, BG2, Mass Effect, NWN2 in the third group (not in order).

Games that I played but didn't "grab" me include: Witcher, Gothic 1, NWN series, Fallout 2, and others.

I've also been playing crpgs from their conception I guess, which was a few years after playng traditional AD&D. I've played DA:O through twice now, and while there are imo some excellent innovations, particularly in regard to character realationships, the DA world overall is too closed and contrived for me. I always prefer to play games in which it is possible to become lost and where there are new discoveries waiting around every corner. I also like it when quests are not too clearly mapped out (with arrows and the like) so I have to use a bit of grey matter solve them. While Dragon age would be in my top 5 for literal role-playing it doesn't rate so highly in complexity of game-world. And its skills system/battle tactics is a step backwards imo.

My top 10 are:

BG1 and 2
NWN 1 (for the community also)
Wizardy series
Might and Magic series (not all equally good)
Gothic 2 and 3 (No. 4 is in my worst 10 lol)
Elder Scrolls series (Morrowind the best of them)
DO:A
NWN 2
Icewind Dale 1 and 2
Eye of the Beholder

Of course comparisons like this are hard to make. For instance no other game will ever match the excitement I experienced when I finally got Wizardry 2 to run on my old 286 PC (I had about 50kb Disk Space to spare hehe) and I opened the first chest. And then again, no crpg will every quite match the enjoyment of playing the one game of AD&D for 2 years with friends (and beer)

I... I have to say I feel Dragon Age isn't as good as I thought it'd be. It's still a great game, and I've gotten a good 45ish hours out of it since I bought it, but I just never feel like picking it up. There's little wrong with the game mechanics, the stat system is pretty good and simple (although I'm not sure on how to gear my casters properly) but some of the art just leaves me feeling a bit "short changed". The females don't really look right, especially Dwarf Females in heavy armor and the Hurlocks look like Goombas from the Super Mario film.

I'm probably a bit sick of RPGs at the moment (I play them a lot, so it could be a simple temporary burnout), and that's likely clouded my vision.

I haven't played games that compare to DAO, I think Final Fantasy is way different, especially when it comes to character relationships..

Slightly off topic, but I don't want to make an entirely new thread for this..

I'm starting to get interested in purchasing Baldur's Gate. I live in the Netherlands and it's hard to find the pc version of this game :( I did, however, stumble upon the PS2 version of this game. I was wondering whether the PS2 version is as good as the pc version?
