The console versions of BG are a different game made by a different developer, IIRC. You want the PC version.

I'm starting to get interested in purchasing Baldur's Gate. I live in the Netherlands and it's hard to find the pc version of this game :( I did, however, stumble upon the PS2 version of this game. I was wondering whether the PS2 version is as good as the pc version?

Whatever you do, don't get the console version thinking it's the same.  This isn't because of any "It's better on platform x" but because they are completely different games, they just used the title due to licensing or somesuch.  You might have to look around a bit, but you should be able to get the entire set in one hopefully (BG1 and 2, with expansions for both).

A word of warning while playing BG1:  it is slow, as in moving the character around takes a long time.  People used to outfit their entire party with boots of haste just to be able to move around without taking so long.  You should still try it just to say you played vanilla BG, but if it's really unbearable for you then you might want to try out the Baldur's Gate Tutu mod, it basically takes Baldur's Gate and runs it in the Baldur's Gate 2 engine.  Baldur's Gate 2 runs fine even today, I'll willingly play it unmodded and have as great a time as with any modern game.

On consoles it's by far the best. And it seems as though it'll be the best until Dragon Age 2 comes out... that's part of the reason I love the DLC and expansion announcements to keep me busy until then.

The most similar one, from my perspective, is Mass Effect. Even though ME's battle system is different (shooter vs. fantasy swords&sorcery), the game has more or less the same "chassis" as DA does, from the perspective of being very story-based, an abundance of cut-scenes and dialogue and a linear story which nevertheless gives some leeway to choose paths and so on. I think DA improved upon ME quite a bit in terms of the character depth and development and so on, but in terms of the "basic design", I think ME follows a very similar basic design to DA. I would assume that ME2 will also be in the same vein, but we'll have to see.

Dragon Age is probably now my favourite game. I'm currently trying to do a final playthrough of Mass Effect in preparation for ME2 but I'm struggling to keep interested. I keep shutting it down & coming back to yet another playthrough of Dragon Age.

Favourite game list includes (in no particular order) :

Dragon Age

Mass Effect

KoToR 1 & 2

Vampire Masquerades : Bloodlines

Jade Empire

Assassins Creed

This question might of been asked before but I've been out of the gaming scene for a few years so I'm out of touch.

Somehow I found dragon age and I was blown away by how the game was. NEVER played an RPG like this before.

Mind you, last good rpg I've been playing has been in the final fantasy. series.

In today's world, how does this game compare to other ones?

Are there other ones which are similar?

Assuming the average RPG gets 5/10 (0-10 scale) in each category (as opposed to the scholastic 7, or the videogame review 8), I'd say DA:O gets a 4.5 in graphics, a 4.5 in story, a 6 in atmosphere and an 8 in gameplay.  I don't care enough about sound (I play the game muted with subtitles) to make a rating in that department.  There aren't too many tactical/conventional RPGs made these days, and I'm not even sure I would put in DA:O in that group, but you could compare it to other similar games made recently: the Witcher, NWN2 and Mass Effect it will come out fairly even except in gameplay where it is much better.  It does fairly well on atmosphere but I think the Witcher, NWN2 (MoTB) and Mass Effect beat it on story.  The graphics are okay but a bit dated for current release.  The atmosphere is pretty good, but again not as good as the Witcher or the NWN2 expansions (though better than the original NWN2).  It's a solid game with better than average gameplay, but otherwise it's standard fare.

It's probably the best RPG I have ever played. I cannot remember the last time I spent 20 hours in-game in 4 days. I actually wake up to play the game, which hasn't happened with me since Diablo II.

I think that the OP didn't ask for a list of your favourite games but he/she asked for any similar rpgs that were released recently. The only similar rpg that was released relatively recently is NWN2 and its two expansions. There are some similarities with the Witcher and Mass Effect but there are major differences as well.

The best game evah is Mass Effect 2... Well, I wish anyway.

Seriouslyl, most of the recent BioWare games have a very similar feel to them, which is not for me a bad thing. I rate Mass Effect (xbox) and Knights of the Old Republic (xbox) ahead of DA:O (xbox), but that is due to my preference of Sci-Fi over fantasy. Not to mention my weakness for Star Wars. If you liked this, KotOR and Mass Effect are definitely worth a shot. Even Jade Empire is in my opinion good for one or two playthroughs for the story alone, especially now that you should be able to pick it up relatively cheap. Also KotOR 2 might be worth a few € (or $), despite being hideously unfinished and buggy. And Fallout 1 & 2 are definitely worth it, thought I imagine the turn based combat might put some people off. Neverwinter Nights 2 I also liked, despite the poor ending. The great thing about all these is that you should be able to get them cheap, so you get good bang for your buck.

Sanboxes are not for me, prefer story driven action, so I don't get Elder Scrolls (and the different expansions/sequels). Fallout 3 I only played because it was Fallout, and it was good for a while, but felt it a bit lacking, I'm just funny that way.

As for Deus Ex and Assasins Creed (1 & 2) that some people mentioned, they are not in my opinion RPG's. Good games though, especially the first Deus Ex (the sequels are decent but not great) and Assasins Creed 2, if you can get past the annoying accents.

And I haven't played BG 2, but apparently I should, so after I am done with ME 2 (and possibly DA:A) I need to get my greasy hands on that, as many people have it pretty high on their list.

 5. Mass Effect (cant wait for sequel)
 4. The Witcher (cant wait for sequel)
 3. Oblivion
 2. Fallout 3 (cant wait for New Vegas)
 1. Dragon age:Origins (cant wait for Awakening, and no i didnt put this on nr 1 just because its DA:O forum, it really is my all time favourite RPG) :)

So as you may see im kind of new to RPG-s and havent really played NWN or BG series at all.
I'd really like to however. Though i have a question, should i play NWN 1 first or it doesnt matter? Same goes to BG?

For me, I rank my RPGs like this:

1. Final Fantasy VI - Amazing story, great gameplay for its time, and I will never get sick of any of the characters. Kefka is the best villain ever. Ever.

2. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - This is technically tied with FF6 for my number one spot. It was the first Star Wars game I had played that didn't disappoint me. In fact, it was quite the opposite; it blew me away. I play through this at least 3 times per year, and it always satisfies my gaming tastes.

3. Mass Effect - I'm in love with the setting. Most fantasy games are a dime a dozen, but a sci-fi RPG... that's rare. People have gripes with the gameplay and a few cosmetic bugs, but not me. The characters, the universe, the backstory... I spent hours reading my codex, and one of my favourite parts of the game was exploring planets in the Mako. I realize I'm in the minority, but just go do it. Go to one of the planets that revolves around a blue sun, stare into the sky, and tell me that isn't amazing.

4. Dragon Age: Origins - It's nipping at the heels of Mass Effect for sure. I haven't fallen so hard for a character (Alistair) since Carth Onasi. I was so emotionally invested in this game that it reduced me to a quivering mass of tears and mucous on a regular basis. This was also another time I spent hours reading the codex.

5. Fallout 3 - Post-apocalyptic Washington DC? Hell yes. Bethesda makes good games, but Fallout 3 really took the cake. It was gritty, entirely unforgiving, and completely brilliant. Super mutants still scare the ****** out of me.

You can't really compare JRPGs to WRPGs, they're fundamentally different.

It seems everyone here is a fan of wrpg...no love for jrpgs? :P

Anyways, I really like Dragon Age but for me, Lost Odyssey is probably still one of the top rpgs I've played. The writing in that game simply blows me away.

Gonna put my list here.

9/10 Neverwinter Nights + expansions, mostly making playerworlds and playing in those with friends

10/10 Planescape Torment

6/10 Neverwinter Nights 2

7/10 Baldurs gate 2 + expansion

9/10 Eye of the Beholder series (Old School late 80s start 90s)

5.7/10 Dragon Age Origins

My low score for DA:O goes for basically lack of multiplayer and constant delay of new content and not a well enough worked through world compared to the days standards.. such as GFX and the likes.

Lost Odyssey was good, but excluding it, I haven't played a JRPG in nearly a decade that I've really felt like, "Wow, what a good game."

The days of the NES and SNES were when JRPGs were amazing imo. FF8 was the last FF game I played that I enjoyed, everything that came after was pretty meh. No desire to play 13, and the MMOs don't interest me.

Not saying that WRPGs are all amazing, either. Fable was a disappointment, but I immensely enjoyed Fable 2. The Witcher was alright. Risen was okay. Overlord and Overlord 2 kind of sucked. Everything from BioWare has been, at the very least, entertaining and worth the money, and Bethesda games are pretty good.

I have FF6 as my favorite RPG as well, I think the way it involves all the characters in the story is still practicaly unique, you jump to different pieces of the story early on, everything comes together realy well, then it falls apart and the ~5th character to join is the one you follow bringing them all back together.  Just about every other RPG I've played, J or W has centered far more heavily on one character.  I put DA:O at second and fallout 3 at third

*shrug* Never played one. I have to admit I don't follow the Japanese gaming market, since they seem to almost exclusively release for console and I don't own one. Is there are good JRPG you could recommend for the PC even?

One of the most critically acclaimed rpgs (final fantasy 7) is available on PC and one of my own favourites, Breath of Fire IV is as well. Those two games are rather old so I highly doubt you will find them at retailers. I think the newest jrpg that was released for PC is The Last Remnant which isn't so great from what I hear.

Well...

DA:O at number one. What can I say?
TES-IV:Oblivion at number two for the untouchable combat system.
BG-II at number three for the best villain in all of video game history.

And the rest is simply good stuff.

I like JRPGs, but I have to say I don't really consider them proper RPGs, more interactive novels.  In my opinion of course, others are certain to disagree.  Then again, if the characters and story are not well enough developed like in Oblivion or Morrowind then I don't consider them RPGs either.  Bioware gets the mix of story with freedom of choice right in general for most of their games to be considered a CRPG in my book.

Either way, I haven't really enjoyed a JRPG in a long time either, whether or not I consider it a RPG.  FF9 was good in my books though seems to be disliked by many, while FF8...I liked the first disc, but the 'revelations' and 'plot twists' (more like plot murders and dismemberments) along with the character developments just killed it after that point.  Tales of Symphonia was alright.  Other than that, they have died to me since then.

Actually, yes Last Remnant was the last JRPG I played.  It had potential, but the way the leveling up worked killed it effectively in my opinion.  Couldn't finish it though, again potential but didn't really live up to it.

I would say the only RPG ive played in the last 4-5 years i have only liked one game more,The Witcher! I would also say Mass Effect and Lost Odyssey (if u are a fan of the old style turn based rpgs) are a close 2nd and 3rd.

I was really surprised at how much I love this game. I think it's the character dynamics that do it for me; I love every character in my party, something I couldn't say for some of my old favourite games.

I'm currently still playing Mass Effect (trying to finish it before I MA2, but I suck so bad at driving the Mako that I'm stuck only hours in), Oblivion, and am replaying Fallout 3 and KOTOR, and I still keep coming back to this. I find the grand problem with Bethesda's recent twosome is that although the world is incredibly engrossing and vivid, the lack of person relationships, especially in Oblivion, does not ring true. Fallout 3 gets away with it a little more, because there's is the whole Dad thing and the world is supposed to be lonely, but I always expect my character in Oblivion to have a place in her community, a family etc, and there's no explanation as to why there isn't.

KOTOR is still brilliant though.

EDIT: And I have to mention the Final Fantasy series as, despite their flaws, they have been a huge part of my life and are 100% the reason I am a gamer. Final Fantasy 6 was the first ensemble cast game I really fell for. Final Fantasy 7 has been called the "Citizen Kane of gaming", and I'd agree. 9 is my favourite. 10 is beautifully made. And 4... it revolutionalised how we view gaming stories. I do think Final Fantasy might be a little obsolete now though. What made them stand out was always for me the storylines, but now we demand such a high standard of storytelling over all genres that I really doubt they will be able to bring much more to the table in the format they are in. I would say that Dragon Age has the same emotional pull as Final Fantasy 6, due to the strength of both casts. The only reason 6 is held higher for me is the fact that damn, that game came out 16 years ago and is still incredible.

So if I had to list a top 5...

1. Final Fantasy 9
2. Final Fantasy 6
3. Dragon Age
4. Fallout 3
5. KOTOR

And trust me, it kills me FF7 didn't quite make it, but I don't think it's aged particularly well and is the only FF game that I think does need remaking. 6's graphics, for 2d, are fantastic.
