In preparation for 'Citadel', I am playing through Mass Effect 3 again. It's been a long time coming, but this is the first playthrough I've done where Kaidan survived on Virmire. Originally, I was under the impression that Ashley and Kaidan recieved the same amount of content each. They each have three scenes in Heurta Memorial, and they both have three scenes if they return to the Normandy (Kaidan has two on the Normandy and one on the Citadel, Ashley has one on the Normandy and two on the Citadel).

But during my playthrough, I've noticed some very noticeable differences in the treatment Kaidan recieved in comparison to Ashley. Kaidan has a tonne of ambient dialogue on the Normandy spread throughout the second half of the game, which is something I think Ashley almost completely lacks. She doesn't interact with anyone, whereas I've seen Kaidan speak to EDI over the intercom, play poker with James, and talk with Adams down in Engineering.

I'm starting to see why people feel Kaidan is more prominent in ME3 than Ashley. He provides way more flavor.

So far I have only played ME with Kaidan but I will have to make a PT with Ash for an comparison. From what I have heard she simply has more material on the Citadel. They have a specific nr of lines available and hers were mostly used up outside the Normandy. But I have enjoyed how active Kaidan feels on the ship.

ME1/ME2 = Ashley
ME3 = Kaiden

What I do is give Kaiden a hero's death and terminate the plastic surgery-obsessed meatbag on the Citadel.

I have said it before, but I feel the main offender here is the portrayal of their characters, more so than the content. It's all in the nuance.

For instance, I feel more empathy for Kaiden vs Ashley. Even as BroShep, I am tempted to let Kaiden survive to ME3, simply because Ashley's bigotry and distrust become grating.

This is a disservice to her character, as I really do want to like her. In contrast, Kaiden, even when confronting Shep, was clearly conflicted. He never came off as "holier than thou."

Too bad my desire for eye-candy leaves Kaiden in a crater...

If only both of them could of stayed on Virmire. I'd buy bioware points for that option.

Yes I have done play throughs with both and I find that Ash doesn't evolve the way Kaidan does . I have come to use Kaidan one heck of alot more in my squad then her in ME3 , and I usually left him on Virmire ! I just played through with him just to change things up now most of my play throughs have him :)

Ashleys character suffered a bit in ME3.

Kaiden in ME3 seems to be a bit more real.

Ashley suffered in ME3. There is a ton of cut content that gave more life to her character, had her interact with individuals on the Normandy and basically gave her the same weight. Why they left such content on the cutting floor is beyond me.

With regards to the so-called "bigotry". There have been countless arguments that have brought to light the essence behind her arguments. Ashley is a cynic, not a bigot thee is a difference.

Ashley is like Zaeed in ME3. Not as chatty on the Normandy, chats as much off it.

Gameplay wise:
Ashley is a soldier. And with her powers she is capable of either hosing down the opposition (assuming they fix the marksman glitch) or creating her own fire explosions (inferno grenade and concussive shot).

Kaidan is a sentinel. Got a good mix of tech and biotic powers to even things out.

My feelings about them started shifting already in ME2, but yeah - the way the characters interacted with Shep/others/the story totally changed over the course of the series.

Although in my case I just edited all but one of my game saves to swap Ash for Kaidan after my first ME3 playthrough.

What's more, Kaidan's Normandy scenes are less...irrelevant, perhaps? He has a great scene with Shepard about the Illusive Man, for example. Whereas Ashley just ends up drunk and sprawled across the floor. She doesn't provide anything interesting. Just comical.

It's odd. Ashley seems so cut off, so isolated in comparison.

"Word budget" is what you're thinking of to describe the differences. They both have the same budget of words; their respective writers used them up in different ways.

They both have their strengths. I would have liked an extra scene on Citadel (DLC should scratch that itch!) with Kaidan like Ashley had, but the two scenes on Normandy fit his character and evolved his relationship with Shepard (concern for family and trying to process what makes TIM well, TIM). I thought the Citadel scenes allowed the player to get to know Ashley better as a person since she's a tough broad to crack. (Her snark is the reason why I like her so much.) I try not to compare the two and say which is better because I've dealt with Kaidan platonic-wise and romantically while I only have seen platonic Ashley.

I don't kill Ashley but I do agree with this for the most part. I have done playthroughs with both. As for a character I really like Ashley a lot more than Kaiden but Kaiden is a lot more of a people person. Kaiden is also a wuss. No other way to put it really he is just a sissy but on the other side Ashley can be a mega b*tch too. I think Kaiden was meant to be cannon though. I think Bioware designed Ashley in ME 1 for people to hate her especially if you liked Liara.

ahh yes 'hurricane liara'

I dont dislike liara, but i feel like both kaidan and ashley got a little cut short on terms of development in favor of her. but thats probaly where the citadel dlc is for(also me2 squaddies offcourse). kaiden seems more conflicted about shepards old ties to cerberus, whilst ashley acts like a **** in the beginning.

heh probably because the world-class babe he was modelled after is Brazilian. everything is more "flavorful" in South America. have you seen him in Gay, Straight or Taken - episode 1? it's hilarious, and it's up on youtube in full HD lol, look for it yourselves pyjaks

I didn't like Ash the first time on Eden Prime. I wish I could have had an option not to let her on the Normandy. Big change to the better, she died a Hero-B**** on Virmire. Rest in peace.
Kaidan is more character. Ash is a pain in the 4ss,

I save Ashley 75% of time, I just prefer her character, seems more "Marine" than Kaiden in ME1.

Her mistrust of the other races is not unrealistic in context, and in fact Pressley expresses almost the same concerns in ME1 regarding the aliens on the ship.

I don't think BW did her character any favours in ME3 however.
