I agree.

I feel that writers were afraid to touch Ash's character the way they adapted Kaidan's.

Ash became more or less a whiny jarhead, while Kaidan was given more of a backstory and instances of interaction.

I question if there were any writers left with the courage to give voice to non-PC opinions like she expressed in ME1. Just look at the hate she still gets on these boards.

I agree, I liked Ash's arc in ME1 and would have liked to see her opinion on alien races evolve more in ME3. She had valid reasons to be a bit xenophobic.

Maybe she could have made a friendship with Garrus but still distrusted the Turians. Perhaps warming up to Tali but staying cool/distrustful toward Liara since she's the (ineffective) SB now. There are places they could have taken her character.

The funniest Ashley line I can think of speaking to Garrus was actually from a work of fan fiction, poking a bit of fun at herself. "I can like one and retain a baseless prejudice against the rest of you, right?"

She was one of my favorite characters in ME1. There was a lot of potential for her, but to my knowledge, she never even leaves the lounge after being recruited.

I had one play through with Ashley, and she had one line that I felt perfectly encapsulated her character and made me delete that play through because I didnt want her to exist anymore.

"I'm a real human, I don't know if that is your thing anymore"

I have no complaints with that at all it was perfectly in character and was a great line for her.  I just have no desire to ever see her live past Virmire.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I have to ask - why do so many S/S Kaidan and Stevemancers have animated love scene banners in their sigs? I don't see any other 'mancers on these boards who feel the need to do that.

Because it's finally possible ("Look like we made it" playing in the background ). I guess for me personally, my avatar captured one of my favorite moment of Kaidan and Shep. It's adorable to me. I don't take it the wrong way because 3 consecutive posts are of s/s Kaidan and one post up is another one. :P . It's merely a concidence, at least for me, since I barely visit this board or Kaidan fan threads. Maybe Kaidan fans have hive mind.

Ashley suffered in ME3. There is a ton of cut content that gave more life to her character, had her interact with individuals on the Normandy and basically gave her the same weight. Why they left such content on the cutting floor is beyond me.

With regards to the so-called "bigotry". There have been countless arguments that have brought to light the essence behind her arguments. Ashley is a cynic, not a bigot thee is a difference.

Ashley is like Zaeed in ME3. Not as chatty on the Normandy, chats as much off it.

Gameplay wise:
Ashley is a soldier. And with her powers she is capable of either hosing down the opposition (assuming they fix the marksman glitch) or creating her own fire explosions (inferno grenade and concussive shot).

Kaidan is a sentinel. Got a good mix of tech and biotic powers to even things out.

Thank you thank you. Finally someone who knows what a bigot is and what a cynic is.

Ashley all the way. Maybe save Kaidan when you're playing as FemShep.

I play as fem shp most time I still save Ashley.

You're pulling my leg aren't you?

No, I just prefer Ashley to Kaiden, regardless of the Shep I play, I did do the FemShep Kaiden Romance to see how it played, but as I usually play as FemShep, the romance is not a factor in who I pick.

I couldn't stand her quoting poetry (sorry, just not my thing at all), and it honestly seemed to fit much better story-wise for Ashley to die on Virmire and fix her family's name. Not only that, but Kaidan accomplishes much more by ME3 than Ashley does; he goes up the ranks faster, and leading the Biotic Division of Spec Ops is a major contribution. Ashley meanwhile is just... there.

I choose Kaidan for many reasons. I find his character and overall storyline to be far more interesting than that of Ashley's. Whilst I agree with some of the people here that Ash is not a bigot, just a cynic, I still find it difficult to tolerate her presence.

Some of her lines are borderline offensive it not outrightly so! I think the "zoo" and "real human" comments have already been mentioned so I wont go there again but it's because of comments like that that she has only lived past Virmire once for me and that was only because I was curious as to what they would do with her character in ME3, I wasn't impressed!

And as for gameplay wise I rarely include soldiers in my squad as I find them a very boring class. I only usually put one in if I need a tank to soak up a lot of damage which isn't often in ME. Kaidan being a sentinel is far more useful to me and I find him far more devastating then I could ever get Ash to be in combat although that may be just me not specing her correctly!

Also, Kaidans romance is the best in the game, had to get that in there :P

Ah...Well each to their own. I would like to mention however that by ME3 Ashley has gotten past the "family-curse", managed to rise from enlisted to a commissioned rank. And all without having biotics.

Do not choose because of a couple lines of dialog or their powers. There are other companions that can fill their power role. Pick which one you want because of how the character acts. Do you want to listen to Ash talk about her sisters and poetry or Kaiden talk about how hard being a biotic is or his missing squad.

I did enjoy Ashleys stories about her family, and I liked that this was in ME3, I didn't mind her questioning Shep in ME3, it fit with my perception of her character. I don't dislike Kaiden in any way, Just prefer Ash.

From a (former) soldier's perspective:

I alway chose Ash over Kaidan. Why, she is the better soldier, remember way back in ME1? Who remarked about the tactical viability of the council stairs, while Kaidan wondered about the aesthetics, who had such an attention to detail that she noticed what kind of trees were grownin all around?

I admit, a commissioned officer is usually the one to be chosen to survive in a situation akin to Virmire, yet Kaidan is not Command material, Ash might be one day (my perception of the characterisation in ME1)...

I apologise for not exactly expressing myself in an acceptable manner, had a hard day today... (my point still stands though...)

If I play as a soldier, Ash survives.
Play biotic, Kaiden survives.
Pragmatist I suppose.

The difference in rank is why I go with Kaidan if I'm doing a "realistic" playthrough - saving Ash feels more like chivalry than tactics (and that's not a slam on other playstyles - it's a game, so I was happy to play the chivalrous hero the first couple of times through).

It's similarly one of the things that I find immersion-breaking in 3 - Kaidan's promotion is a bit much, but not unbelievably so, while Ash's crosses the line into impossibility for me.

If they allow Shep to save Kaidan and Ashley instead, there would be no Asari stalker.

Better is subjective, but I like both Ashley and Kaidan, so all I said is they should have allowed people to sacrifice Liara also. That would have shut up many arguments about Liara being the writer's pet. To be honest, ME3 Liara is better than the old Liara, she seems too needy in ME1. The decision would be harder to sacrifice the new Liara but the old Liara is a no brainer.

Were that the option; I'd have done it at least once. I honestly tears me up each time I have to decide to sacrifice Kaidan or Ashley. Even if I plan it out in advance as a "This time Ashley is the VS" when it comes to the actual scene I have to stop and think about it again.

Liara has grown on me over the games, but in ME1 she's just kind of.. yeah. I'd have offed her to save the two.
