Even Tali has misgivings about joining you in ME2. In fact, she doesn't right away, as you remember.

She didn't join on you on Freedom's Progress because she had already agreed to lead the science team on Haestrom. She didn't want anyone else to take her place on such a dangerous mission she says this if I remember right when she joins you on Haestrom.

The sooner you get either Ashley or Kaidan in ME 3, the more comments they'll make regarding the missions and the progress in the main plot. The same if you use them for missions. This is a no spoiler forum, but Ash & Kaidan talk a lot during missions and you end up understanding some things better IF you include them in key plot moments (which is, of course, a player's choice, it is up to you).

I, for one, liked these two characters. I think they were not given enough dialogue options in ME 3. In ME 1, Ashley was written by Chris L'Étoile, who also wrote Legion and Thane for ME 2 (some of the best, deepest characters in the franchise). Unfortunately, he left Bioware in 2009. He did an excellent work with these 3 characters, whoever wrote Legion and Thane for ME 3, just had to continue with the great foundational work and involve them in the galaxy-wide conflict.

With Kaidan Alenko or Ashley Williams, the writing was going to be trickier. First off, they were loyal to Shepard, to the core, in ME 1 (whether you were malShep or fem Shep). But they were military, like you. They can't just accept you are seemingly working for Cerberus. They both admit to "not wanting to believe the rumors". (direct quote from ME2)

Without an insight into what Shepard is doing in ME 2, they don't really know who you are anymore. Even Anderson, the paternal figure and one of Shepard's major supporters, doesn't really understand at first what is Shepard doing with Cerberus. There may be even rumors that you never died, that you simply defected. He admits to have been witholding information from you, the very first time you talk to Anderson in the Citadel.

If you stop to think about it, they don't know the details about the Lazarus Project or the Collectors' raids, TIM has probably been leaking misinformation all along (and that may include false info that you have fully embraced Cerberus ideals). The fact that all "Cerberus" personnel on board the SR-2 seem friendly should not overshadow the fact that it is a terrorist organization without scruples(Akuze? Kahoku? Jack and other biotic children kidnappings? Their bioweapons experiments with Rachni? Project Overlord? Trying and botching a secret operation to take control of a derelict Reaper?).

TIM manages to fool Shepard and his team several times in ME2, who is to say he does not fool the Alliance Intelligence into thinking of you as a turncoat?

The encounter on Horizon and the email from the Virmire survivor in ME 2 are very revealing of this. It would make sense, as fellow Alliance officers, they'd mistrust you until you fully prove your true allegiance, in other words, until you disprove all the propaganda and misinformation about you TIM may have spread while you were the CO onboard one of their ships.

I agree, the writing and dialogue for both characters in ME 2 and ME 3 could have been much better, but story-wise it makes sense you have to regain their trust. It may come across as just being ****y, but in the 3-game story arc it makes sense. Even Tali has misgivings about joining you in ME2. In fact, she doesn't right away, as you remember.

This is pretty much spot on.

Chakwas makes numerous comments about Cerberus in both ME2 and ME3, Adams talks to Sheperd about it in ME3 and his thoughts/misgivings and even Garrus is unsure of Cerberus when he gets on board the ship.

Kaidan and Ashley are both Alliance through-and-through. The reason why Kaidan seems more understanding in ME3 is actually told to us in ME1 - "Aliens are saints and jerks just like the rest of us" and the entire BAaT backstory. Kaidan knows that sometimes things aren't always what they seem and as long as Shepard shows his worth then it has him come around.

People forget that Ashley joined a military that hates her family and is almost brainwashed into always following regs. Her CO apparently dies but then turns up two years later working for a terrorist organisation? What's a by-the-book, no imagination soldier supposed to think? It isn't that she's two-dimensional but that the entire cornerstone of her identity is that of being an Alliance solider and fighting for the Alliance and their ideals.

The reason I picked Ashley over Kaiden in all my PT's is that she has something to prove.  That became obvious when Ashley disclosed the fact that it was her grandfather that was in charge of the garrison that surrendered to the Turians in the first contact war.  It became apparent that the Alliance Military's prejudice against her family impacted Williams to become temperamental to others and those of the Alien races.  I can only imagine the frustration Williams had when being passed over for promotions and/or lucrative assignments based on what happened with her grandfather.

Kaiden on the other hand pretty much has a secretive past in which the Alliance sealed his records as a result of the errors made during his training and that he killed an instructor whose methods were harsh.  As well he already is established as a fine Alliance Officer - pretty much has it made.

I played both and to be honest I stick with my original opinion, Ashley is annoying and needs to be left with the bomb. I really just wanted to hear the missing audio that didn't orginally trigger with the 2 engineers if you used Kaiden. I find Ashley is a pain in the rear and really annoying over all.
