That's pretty spiffy! I've always been a fan of more realistic hair behaviour in games.

Realistic physics for hair is nice. Realistic colouring and highlights are also great and so is digital hair that reacts realistically to lighting.

What would be superb, though would be hair that reacts realistically to rain by becoming limp and saturated with water and darkens accordingly. Now if someone could apply TRESSFX to facial hair, I'd be a very happy gamer. Has anyone done that yet?

I think you would need GTX Titans in a 3-way SLI to have enough graphical horsepower to render a dwarven beard with TressFX.

It looks nice, but hair physics are really low on my list of priorities.

Seconded. It could make for some nice visuals if implemented properly, but generally speaking, high budget spent on graphics won't be what ultimately makes a game feel innovative for me.

That would be great, if wasn't an AMD exclusive technology only available to people with some of the higher end 7000 series Radeons.

Lots of talk about hair in todays DA3 Sprint review at Bioware. I think they saw a demo of TressFX

You have any idea how much a cutting edge AMD GPU (such as the 7970) costs?

It costs more than an Xbox and a Playstation combined.

There's no way we're getting any of this. Because the game has to run on consoles. Sorry.

Nonsense. Tomb Raider also runs on consoles. Price is not an issue for some. In fact I have two HD 7970s. And I am not the only one using Crossfire or SLI. Most likely it runs on less capable machines. Of course a PC gaming rig costs way more than a console. That's why it has all that tech that a console can only dream of. It's a good thing these companies push the borders of gaming using the available PC tech like TressFX. They should. That's why PC gaming rigs are being sold.

Unless there is a bump map for every armor in the game, this will clip like crazy.

The advantage of TressFX is that it doesn't clip. Read more about it before posting.

I would wait 3 or 4 extra months for this to be implemented.

Why? The article talks about the 2013 release of the game. It doesn't talk about being a tech that would be introduced later.

Graphics tech isn't hugely important to me, but I do like consistent art direction. Faces have gotten quite realistic, but bad hair models look so out of place on a realistic head.

I'd love to see this in DA3, though I don't have a card even close to being able to handle it. Still, something to aim for I suppose.

New tech takes time to be implemented. Bioware can't just download some code and then have amazing, realistic hair in Inquisition.

It's already been developed, according to that article. And Inquisition is not done yet.

Just because a different game(on a different engine) has implemented it doesn't mean Bioware can just slap it into their game and move on. It would have to be adapted to their game, their art style, their engine.

?? Well, it's an underlying system that doesn't require any extra dialogue, crafted animation, or level design, etc., so I think it would exist in perfect harmony with whatever else they would do anyway. It would be the engine programming guys and gals that would implement this, I think. It shouldn't be any extra strain on any other department. I mean, you'd still have to design the hairstyles, but you're doing that anyway.

If I recall correctly the new Frostbite engine is middleware like CDPR's engine which allows incorporation of third party systems (I could be wrong), that when combined with what Bioware have said about working with DICE to create the engine around their needs, this to me sounds like DICE could update/incorporate it into their engine with this for Bioware to use.

Impressive!
I don't think this is ATI-exclusive though.
And you can reach similar results (with a little worse reflections) with Nvidia PhysX (see Alice: Madness Returns). I highly doubt this would only run on ATI cards, it's not that demanding Tech to use on the card to require a specialized architecture.
