So, I've really been on the fence about this game, considering I really disliked AC3, and it seemed that it was walking in that direction with this game. I'll just tell you my childish gripes with AC3, and maybe you could help me out and say whether they fixed these issues. Please?

I think we're all in agreement that AC3 was not a step in the right direction. Connor was horribly boring, and not compelling at all. I agree with your assessment about Haytham; I was bummed that we went from a charismatic, interesting character, to a boring kid with no personality. They succeeded with Edward. He has personality in spades, and it's genuine. You really can't help but like him.
The environment is not "empty" feeling like it was in AC3. I'm sure you've probably read that about 40% of your time is on spent on a ship. I'd say I spent an even larger percentage of my 70+ hours on mine. There is much to look at and do. I mean...there are shipwrecks that you can explore with a diving bell. Mayan ruins you can explore (and stelae to solve). I could go on and on.
There were a couple of 'chase' missions, but they were nothing like that Charles Lee one.
I think you might be over-thinking this, but I totally get it. You may want to back up in this thread and read over the posts since AC4's release (we've been really good about no spoilers).
The really nice thing is that you can play it in whatever style you prefer. If naval missions or sailing/pirating are your thing (they're mine), you can feed that urge until the cows come home. This is a great game. I definitely think you would like it.
