What's so funny is that this Assassin's Creed game is coming out on my brother's birthday. Ha!

Also, did you see how PETA was bashing the shark hunting mechanic for the game? Hmm...

Not sharks, but whales.

And the Ubisoft response was golden.

PETA wrote...

"Whaling—that is, shooting whales with harpoons and leaving them to struggle for an hour or more before they die or are hacked apart while they are still alive—may seem like something out of the history books, but this bloody industry still goes on today in the face of international condemnation, and it’s disgraceful for any game to glorify it. PETA encourages video game companies to create games that celebrate animals—not games that promote hurting and killing them."

Ubisoft wrote...

"History is our playground in Assassin’s Creed," Ubisoft said in a statement to the publication. "Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is a work of fiction that depicts the real events during the Golden Era of Pirates. We do not condone illegal whaling, just as we don’t condone a pirate lifestyle of poor hygiene, plundering, hijacking ships, and over-the-legal-limit drunken debauchery."

"And even if the game does glorify whaling — as it certainly glorifies the life of a pirate — I don’t think it will lead to a generation of gamers who head to the Caribbean to hunt down humpbacks. Just as I don’t think anyone who played the previous Assassin’s Creed games have found employment as a murderer for hire."

Brief observations based solely on trailer

Awesome concept, 17th century Caribbean, pirates, ship combat. Awesome stuff. Why no more games are made of this, no idea.

Wrong Franchise. Ooooo look at me I'm sneaky Assassin pirate with bathrobe hood. I sneak upon you with my ship! You never notice me on your mast TIL IT IS TOO LATE. Idiotic. I'd love to have the real pirate appearing in trailer as PC, not the hooded dork.

Suppose I start waiting for Assassin's Creed V - Shadow of Nasa
Imagine The Dude cool Dude wearing his totally legit Assassin-making hood on top of a modern space suit while in outer space..awesome stuff. Storyline wraps myth and history into captivating package, Nasa stops at nothing to keep you from uncovering faked moon landings. Turns out templars run nasa. Last boss, vorn Braun in Dark Side of The Moon. /spoiler

This made me laugh harder than I probably should have. This really is the perfect response to PETA!

Whaling was a big part of life back then and most, if not all the whale's parts were used. From food to oil for lamps, and even perfume. Seems perfectly fine to include it for historical accuracy, because this period of life was pretty much centered on the whaling industry. However, greed and overuse caused it to spin out of control, which is what caused groups like PETA to protect whales today.
Don't want to drag us off topic or anything, but even the small groups who still practice whaling are fine in my opinion, because they can't severely impact the whale population all by themselves, not like when everyone was doing it back then.

Makes me wonder if they'll (PETA) will go after whoever decideds to publish a new edition of Herman Melvil's Moby Dick.

I love Assassin's Creed. I read the comics and books, get the CEs of the games, and love talking about it. But for some reason I'm not as excited about this one as I should be.

2 things amaze me

- Are PETA not concerned at all about their credibility? Managing to express concern over digital whales s in game named Assassins Creed is surely either tongue in cheek or thoroughly retarded.

- For decades now, PETA's fights and warfare have been predominantly waged in Media. Surely they must understand pretty well how Media operates and how Average Joe processes it? So surely they understand this gave Ubisoft a pleasant, fun, highly memorable bit of free PR while displaying PETA in light implying self parody.

Today I learned PETA has chosen to promote Assassins Creed Franchise

PETA's attempt to save Pokémon utterly destroyed any iota of credibility they ever had in the first place.

Did they go after Dishonoured? The entire culture of the Dishonoured universe is dependant on slaughtering whales.

Yup, it was an actual thing. PETA seriously tried to save Pokémon. I don't even know what to think of that.

I highly recommend playing the PETA Pokémon flash game. It involves beating Pokémon up, eating Pokémon, and other stuff. It's crazy. That's what PETA thinks Pokémon is all about.

Which just goes to show that they've never played a Pokemon game in their life, and are just b****ing about it because they need the PR. It's just like when Fox News was making an uproar over Mass Effect allegedly being a Space Sex Simulator.

The sad thing is the game was very Pokémon like. It had some Pokémon references, the battle system down, and parody characters.

I'm getting burnt out on this series. Wish they'd wait a bit before rushing out another title just so they can get quick cash.

OP updated with a new interview from GI.

Best to descripe the interview is to take a quote from the article interview.

''We speak with Colin Woodard, the historian who literally wrote the book
on the golden age of piracy. His insight offers plenty of hints about
what to expect in the upcoming game''

And now i go to bed.

If you have a Vita, pick up AC3 Liberation. Main protagonist is a female Assassin.

It's looking good.

The Naval aspect of AC3 really shone in parts, and if I remember correctly they'd assigned a whole studio to what wasn't a 'major' part of the game. It would have been madness not to take it one step further to a full release.
If Edward is like Haytham I'll be pleased too, Haytham was awesome.

Special editions look good too, I got the Freedom for AC3 and the Codex edition of Brotherhood and they're well worth the extra cash.
