Other question is that I've heard that there is an alternate ending available because people didn't like the original ending. Do I have to finish the game to be able to access the new ending (or other downloadable content)?

I've had the game for a while. I play, get stuck then quit and come back to it in a coupleof weeks or so. I am making pretty good progress now (ie. not getting stuck) but a couple of things have come up, not exactly in the game. When I log in the screen eventually says "Checking for downloadable content." After a short pause I get "this DLC is corrupt and won't work. Please download again." or words pretty close to those. Well, I haven' downloaded any content yet, so I don't know what this is refering to. Any ideas?

I can't answer the first question, sounds like you need to contact tech support.
For the second, yes there is a revised ending. It is called the Extended Cut DLC. And no you don't need to finish the game to be able to download any DLC. You will, obviously, have to finish the game to actually watch the ending. Or Youtube it.
