Some people bought the game for a great story too, which I'm a sucker for. The game could be buggy or have a less than stellar combat system but as long as the story and characters are engrossing I'm usually sold. Romances usually go along with great stories.
Having a male/female male/male or female/female romance option in a game is an added bonus for those that want to relate character and get into the story more.

Being a Bioware RPG I trusted that the story was going to be nice... because before buying it I can't judge how the characters are developed or the complexity of the plot... so I thought: RPG, Bioware, Dragons, Gore.... why not?Wesley Wyndam Price wrote...

As for those asking for more options and for Alistair to be given the "gay option".... I disagree with this. You can't magically turn someone gay in real life, and as far as i was concerned, Alistair was not into other men. It's part of his character, and like in real life, something you have to accept.
I'm just happy that Bioware made what some call a "bold move" and had the bi-sexual Zevran and Leliana. Please stop complaining. lol. I'm also glad that they did NOT include an option to "gay" all romanceable characters, as it feels very unrealistic to me. Morrigan and Alistair being straight made sense. Zevran's character, and his sexual preference and open-minded attitude made sense.
Awesome job Bioware.

LOL I am sort of hoping not... I was romancing Morrigan with my boy rogue throughout the game and let her in my tent evernight at camp, but I kept everyone in love with me. At the end Zev was the only one who asked to tag along so I said yes. I think I just accidently made a boy friend! LOL I probably should have figured it out when he gave me the earing

Allow me to make a final comment on the rather tiresome discussion wether gayness should be included in video games etc...
I would guess, if Bioware had chosen not to include gay romance un DAO, all should be well, yes?
However, I care to take a look from the other side.
One should never forget that in many corners of the world, being gay is actually dangerous, because gay people are being prosecuted... even in the more "liberal minded" states, it is not always easy. So, we all see that laws that protect gays from being harrased are useful and, sadly, needed...
Now, could the absence of gay romance in a videogame (or any other media), at least if it displays a large variety of people, not be seen as discrimination?
Yes, it could. Simply because it is the expression of a memory of a decades-lasting oppression of homosexuality...
Well, probably I am going to be called whiny and oversensitive. I just thought, in the sense of gender-equality, it should be now the time to DEFINETLY inculde an option for gay romance, if you are going to include romances at all.
We all want to live in a world where we are free and equal, right ?
Remember, nobody actually chooses to become gay...

That is a compliment. If a girl tells me I'm hot I am going to thank them (even though I'm gay). You seem insecure, but with patience you will move past this.

perversion (noun) - any of various means of obtaining sexual gratification that are generally regarded as being abnormal. gratification (noun) - source of pleasure or satisfaction. abnormal (adj) - deviating from a standard.
I'm still trying to piece together how (and why) it is "perverted" for one to audaciously inform another of one's attraction. Is there any "sexual gratification" to be had from doing so? Is it really that "abnormal?" Perhaps I'm an idiot, or perhaps I simply rely too heavily on denotation and semantics. Either way, this is way over my head.

Yeah, if complimenting someone is perverted/unacceptable behavior, then I'm pretty sure the human race would have died out by now, lol.

I'd like to see perhaps a new romance option. Even better if there was one character who is gay, rather than bisexual like Zevran and Leliana. While Bioware gives the romance option for both ways, they still avoid a character who is solely same sex attracted to my knowledge. So long as the character wasn't written to fit a stereotype it would be a nice option (something for everyone) , though i can understand them not making every character romancable for either gender, since obviously not everybody is gay. Nice to have a fair mix.
On the subject of Alistair, keep him how he is i think. Dont just suddenly become gay cause some people want you toThere's a mod which allows males to romance him anyway (i know, i've tried it hehe). Have to say though, i thought he was gay at first.
QFT. I personally really like Zev's romance with a male PC, since there's a lot more to him that what's on the surface. But that's a little off topic.
Personally, I hope the romances we already have will at least continue or be acknowledged in Awakenings. My personal version of canon had Zev never leaving my side while I rebuilt the Wardens, so at the very least he needs to be included in the cameo. And if he can't come with, than I would really like a plausible reason for staying behind.
I don't know how long the expansion will be. Long enough to justify whole new romances? I don't know. And I'm happy with those included already. I'd more like to see them continued in some meaningful way than new options introduced.

Wournos, let it go and shut up please. People get upset today by stupid things like smoking on the street, or buying plastic bags thats goes against the global warning. I said and some people noticed that Zevran was a perverted, if he is gay or not thats another fact, but doestn mean necesarily that all gays are perverted. Get some selfcontrol next time and dont try to find offenses where they dont exist at all. End of discussion!

Of course Alistair will realize he's gay in the expansion. Why do you think it's called "The Awakening?"
I agree with this too but I guess it's too late for wishes as it's not too far from release, and in my world, development/changes takes a lot more time than a few months. I will wait it out and let some others buy the expansion and read the reviews before I get into it.cmathews03 wrote...

Wow, that's a curious thing to notice. In that terms maybe the whole "The Awakening" title was planned as an easter egg?
Then, if we go back a few years, "Link's awakening" means...

That said I think it would be nice if you could have non party member romance be male/female in your origin story more like that there was somebody "back home"/in your past. More like the prospective spouse in city elf or the hints about you and Tamlen in dalish, etc. The sex restrictions also seemed pointless in the minor ecounters like when you can seduce the elves from that one quest in the dalish camp. I don't care about them, they don't have a spelled out rich history which would be changed if you seduce them same sex. [compared to let's say Anora where a gender restriction to marrying makes sense because of the necessity to produce an heir for a royal couple]
BTW I also think it would be generally neat to have a "back home" option (same-sex or straight). Somebody who is not a fighting party member but who sits back home and you can visit them every once in a while. Drop your look, give them some gifts, etc. Kinda like some games allow you to have a house or a room with some trophies. And space hamsters

As far as more options go, I'd like that. Leliana's nice, but admittedly, I could do with someone a little more rugged myself.

Until I played Dragon Age, I would have said that in-game romances were totally irrelevant
Before I look for other’s opinions I play the game myself. I was therefore totally unprepared for what Bioware had in store. Playing a Human Noble, my mother introduced me to Darrion and his sister. In the Library I amused myself with dialogue options that suggested my player-character was trying to flirt with this shy young man. When he reciprocated, I nearly fell off my chair. At first I thought I had found a bug - but my broad-minded brother appeared to know that I was gay. Then followed the bedroom scene (and its consequence).
For a long time I thought Alistair might be a gay or bisexual character particularly when dialogue about first sexual experiences opened up.
When Zevran came on the scene, the game was taken to a different level again. Dialogue between the Warden and Zev became extremely exotic (or do I actually mean erotic?)
Of course I will still buy RPG games for their playability but Bioware have brought a new dimension to the whole concept of game playing. The player and the game characters now develop relationships with each other as the computer character starts to become “real” in the player’s mind.
So – for what it is worth, I would like the DA expansion to continue this concept and allow the player character the same degree of flexibility in formation of their relationships.
(Bioware – Please take note! I hold no fantasies about Darkspawn).

I agree. I love the flexibility Bioware included in the DAO romance options, but completely redefining every party member to be bi seems unrealistic and takes away from their individual identites imo.johook213 wrote...
I still disagree with this magic "make them gay option" people are asking for.... and i am a gay male myself mind you. It takes away from the character depth and realism for me with this "option". In real life I can't pick the option to make some dude gay just because i like him..... he may very well be straight and it is something that need be accepted. I like that Alistair was straight and the same with Morrigan, and I don't think Bioware should change this...
