Was just reading The Calling and just realized how terribly sad both books really are and thought I would start a forum for us all to vent our sad thoughts as a form of therapy (or something).  So here are my most tearful moments from the books and DA Origins:

The Stolen Throne: I broke down in disbelief when Maric killed Katriel.  I really was utterly devastated and it made me completely hate Loghain so much that I have no problem with letting Alistair lop off the guy's head at the Landsmeet.  I mean I know that in a way it had to be done for Maric to become hardened, but still he ended up marrying a woman he didn't truly love (not in that way at least) and he just ended up being very sad.

The Calling: Now I'm only mostly finished with The Calling.  I have a few chapters left to go so I may rethink my saddest moment after I have completely finished it, but the part where Julien dies and then where Nicolas decides to stay in the Fade with Julien and die instead of joining the others left me crying like a baby.  In fact I had to put the book down I was bawling so much.

DA Origins: Well, I've never played it where there is a sacrifice at the end with the Archdemon, otherwise I'm sure I would have cried my eyes out over that, and killing Loghain after the whole Katriel thing actually left me feeling somewhat satisfied, so I guess it would be where Leliana sings her song at camp.  That may not be the saddest moment in the game but it still left me feeling tearful the way everyone (except Morrigan) seems to be so sad and reflecting on their lives and decisions they have made.

Gawd, I cry way too easily. I need a tissue. Image IPB

Damn, David Gaider and his talent to make girls cry. Image IPBImage IPB

Anyway, please share your saddest moments from the books and DA Origins.

I really liked this part and considered it the defining moment in the Stolen Throne.  It wasn't sad, but it was more like an "Oh, ****!" type moment.  You can't blame Loghain though as he was doing what he believed to be best for Maric.  Any leadership will be far from rainbows and unicorns - far from it.

Yeah, I know it was necessary, but I really liked Katriel and honestly I thought that maybe if Loghain had shared everything he knew with Maric including the fact that Katriel had severed her ties with Severan that maybe Maric would not have killed her.  He might have just locked her away and possibly could have forgiven her after he defeated the Orlesians.

Saddest for me in game, was the Ultimate Sacrifice ending. After reading what happens to a romanced Zev and poor Oghren... Morrigan's offer will be accepted every time whether Ali or Loghain like it or not.

And Julien and Nicolas... *sniff* It took days for me get over the depression. Days!

I know, that's the part where I am currently stopped at.  I can't even pick up the book right now, it made me so sad. Image IPB

I will avoid spoilers but I probably have teared up the most during my Dalish playthrough. The surprise you get late in the game tying up your origin story... gah... I did not see that coming.

Also, I mentioned over in the Dalish thread that Nature of the Beast always gets me verklempt, when Zathrian is breaking the curse and the werewolves are saying goodbye to the Lady.

The city elf story gets me, too. Both the origin story (especially this playthrough as I imagined my character connecting with Nelaros... seeing him get cut down... ack) and later when you go back to the alienage. Especially the orphanage.

Omg, how could I have forgotten those?  I add those two to my list as well.  They're much sadder than Leliana's song, especially the werewolf one - it gets me every time. Image IPB

Oh yeah, the ending of the nature of the beast. The moment when the werewolves say their farewell to the lady of the forest is really well made.

Also, dwarf noble origin with female. The prison scene is quite touching.

I am not usually someone that would tell these things, but the game was well made in sad moments. Apart from mentioning Duncan when Alistair is present. That's not sad, that's repetitive!

I've not played as a dwarf yet.  I'll have to try it just to see that scene.

Leliana's song was really meaningful for my Dalish character, too. For one thing, it was one of the few times her companions showed any awareness of her culture as being special and of value. (The other time being when Alistair calls the Dalish funeral custom beautiful.) That both touched her and made her proud.

The Stolen Throne: Definitely the Maric-killing-Katriel scene. My stomach was in knots. And then to have that followed up with the confrontation with the banns in the Chantry...it really illustrated that this Maric was no longer the rather innocent fellow from the opening chapters. Very powerful.

The Calling: Duncan in the Fade. Both his dream and his confrontation with Genevieve. I felt badly for him already, knowing what he'd gone through that made him a Grey Warden, but to have Genevieve spit at him (metaphorically)... Poor, poor Duncan.

The game: 1) After making unhardened Alistair king on my first playthrough as an elven mage, and getting blindsided by him dumping me. I was stunned and distressed, two emotions I've NEVER felt while playing an RPG. And I wouldn't trade that experience, as painful as it was. 2) The conversation you can have with Alistair after sparing Loghain, if you've married him off to Anora. I spared Loghain only once to get the achievement, and have yet to play through to the end with him, because it is such a betrayal to the character you've spent the entire game with. The best thing about this game is how emotionally invested you can get with the characters, enough that it feels like you're actually hurting their feelings to make some decisions. And THAT is why I'm on my 9th playthrough.

Yeah, playing as a Dalish elf is really sad I thought, but it was my favorite out of all the origins.

I need to add one to my list of saddest moments from The Stolen Throne: When Loghain's father dies.  I didn't cry about it though but only because you didn't know Gareth long enough to actually get to know him, but later in the book when Maric thinks about his sacrifice so that Maric and Loghain could get away, it just seemed so very sad.

I've never spared Loghain. I just don't think I could take betraying Alistair like that.  Besides I just think of Katriel and a smile comes over my face when Alistair cuts off Loghain's head. Image IPB

I agree about the dumping scene.  I felt like I had been kicked in the stomach.  I cried for the rest of the day (I'm so hopeless with things like that). Image IPBImage IPB

I spared him, talked to him at camp for a few minutes, then promptly reloaded the Landsmeet to have Al kill him. I don't know if I'll be able to have a playthrough where I feed him to the archdemon, as much as I'd like to.

I liked that too and the first time I played the game I actually did think it was very sad because I thought that was the last time you would see your friends that you left behind at the gate, especially when they all come up to you and say their goodbyes.  I was completely in tears by the time the last one said their goodbyes, which happened to be Morrigan in my game. And even though I didn't really like Morrigan that much, what she said to me about being her only friend just melted my little heart to pieces. Image IPB  Oh, but I guess if you do the ultimate sacrifice at the end that is the last time you ever speak to them.

Also not really sad, but epic: the speech Alistair gives to the troops. It gets me riled up and ready for battle every time. And he doubts that he'll be a good king. Pshaw. :D

Four:
- Alistair sacrifices himself
- PC sacrifices him/herself
- Loghain sacrifices himself
- Everyone lives with the help of Morrigan's Dark Ritual

And there are a number of permutations of those (e.g., who's king/queen, what the Warden does after it all, if s/he survives, etc.).

I have heard that her speech is cringe-worthy at best. :o

Luckily, I have yet to hear it myself.

Most emotionall experiences? there are so many...
The first playtrough my mod swifted up and down like a rollercoaoster. Second, third and so on not as bad, even thou there are stuff that still make me fell sad.

Some of them whera I have been totched the most are:

*Metting my "father" in the gauntlet (the first time)

*Lelianas song

*Alistars sacreficing himself for his love (cried like a baby)
But it made me "mad" when no one even mentioned him at the cornation.

*Oghren giving his and Felsis boy his best friends, my male hero, name (in the endings - ultimate sacrifice)

Actually I think Anora's speech is exactly like Alistair's one, but instead of "brother king Cailan" she will say "husband king Cailan". But when she goes with that last line "FOR THE GREEEEEEEE(head explodes)Y WARDENS, FOR FEREEEEEEEE(body explodes)LDEEEN!
