Hmm just finished reading the books myself. For the Stolen throne I thought the scene where Rowan is standing outside of Maric's tent in that red dress, knowing he was sleeping with Katriel . Defiantly made a tug on me.
As to the calling I really thought after the dragon fight where Duncan runs off and tells Fiona and Maric how he ended up becoming a grey warden was a deep scene. Not overly emotionally, but it really helped paint the tension that wasn't visible to the reader until that moment. For emotionaly charged I have to go with the scene where Kell and Hafter go to fight one last battle, and how kell tries to leave Hafter behind and how hurt and confused the poor dog is.
As to the game itself, the scene for the human noble orgins with tha parents is always been a strong emotional scene, though the "reunion" with Tamlen from the Dalish orgin was pretty strong too. Only bad part about the latter scene was the party members kinda brushed it off and didn't say much about it other than alistair saying "it happens" or something to that affect.

I haven't read the books yet, but the first time I felt strong emotions in-game was during Cailan's betrayal, during which I really *really* wanted to strangle Loghain.

The second time this occurred, I was watching my own funeral (creepy, right?), as Alistair gave a heartfelt speech in my memory.

Final time, I was playing through as a city-elf, and I really wanted to skin, gut, carve up, strangle, torture, brand, poison and just generally hurt Vaughan. I don't know if it was the voice acting or the animation itself, or perhaps that the incident he created could so easily happen in real life - but I wanted him to suffer a slow, slow death.

I don't, however, ever recall any truly sad scenes though.

Allowing Isolde to kill Connor herself was quite possibly the worst part in the game for me. I played through with a rather good character and made all the "moral" decisions so in my second play-through I wanted to make my character less caring. I changed all of my character's reactions after seeing that scene. I just couldn't bear making those kinds of choices anymore. It really got to me.

Leliana's song was really meaningful for my Dalish character, too. For one thing, it was one of the few times her companions showed any awareness of her culture as being special and of value. (The other time being when Alistair calls the Dalish funeral custom beautiful.) That both touched her and made her proud.

I have played the Dalish origin and don't remember either of these.:unsure:Could it be because I took Morrigan's offer and didn't do the Ultimate Sacrifice, or did I just miss them?

I felt really bad for Zevran when he finally told me about his last mission before trying to kill me.  It broke my heart.

If I remember correctly, Alistair says the part about the Dalish funeral when you are at Flemeth's hut right after she rescues you from Ostagar.  He talks about Duncan dying and then that comes up about the funeral if I'm not mistaken.

Leliana will sing a song at camp if you have her approval level high enough and I think you also have to do her personal quest first.

Thanks, I will have to go back and see if I can find that.  Because all I need is for this game to put another lump in my throat and make me sad. ^_^ Cheers to Bioware for creating so many emotions from just a game.

It wasnt exactly a tearful moment, but it was quite powerful, when the epic music kicks in as you run towards the gates of denerim with all the soldeirs cheering

simply, epic :D

I liked that too and the first time I played the game I actually did think it was very sad because I thought that was the last time you would see your friends that you left behind at the gate, especially when they all come up to you and say their goodbyes.  I was completely in tears by the time the last one said their goodbyes, which happened to be Morrigan in my game. And even though I didn't really like Morrigan that much, what she said to me about being her only friend just melted my little heart to pieces. Image IPB  Oh, but I guess if you do the ultimate sacrifice at the end that is the last time you ever speak to them.

This is the scene that affected me the most in the entire game. I totally teared up and had chills, and Alistair made that epic speech, and then everyone says goodbye to you. It affected me more emotionally than anything else in the game. Truly EPIC, and almost heartwrenching in a beautiful way.

Leliana's song for my Dalish elf, oh yes. And Morrigan, at the end, when you say you want to talk about her sleeping with Alistair, and then you thank her--the way her face crumples and she almost tears up and tells you how much it means to her. That was the first time in the game I felt like I actually saw HER. So very touching.

I never got dumped by Alistair my first time through (human noble) and knew about it when I started other games. I imagine that would have stunned me and made me honestly cry, though. Talk about a kick to the gut. It's amazing how invested I am in these characters.

Leliana's Song. A good one.

But the one that actually made me feel a little bad inside was my first playthrough, where i declined Morrigan's offer and decided to sacrifice myself. Then when Leliana came to talk to me before i departed into Denerim after taking the gates, and told me that i should come back to her.
I felt really bad knowing that i wouldn't make it back alive and when i read that she decided to "join" me, i was broken

Oh, that's so sad.  I didn't know she would do that.  I've never romanced her but we were like sisters.  That just brought a tear to my eye. So sad. Image IPB

So, in order to recruit Loghain so I could get his perspective at RtO, the only save I had on me was a female city elf who was romancing Alistair. The break-up at the Landsmeet was pretty rough. His parting words were, "Take care of yourself," No anger, or bitterness. How sad :(

But, then bringing Loghain to RtO9Spoilers ahead

.

.

.

.

.

When PC and Loghain are discussing what to do with Cailan's body, his disregard for Cailan, even after the ungrateful turd's life was spared, shocked me, made me very angry. No one deserves to be left to the wolves like that, imo.

There were a lot of moments in the game that I felt were really moving.

1. The sequence at the battle for Ostagar when Duncan charges the ogre after Cailan is dead and then dies. I was more angry than sad, because the instant Loghain left I was so mad I swear I almost snapped my PS3 controller in half.

2. My character had a romance with Alistair, and when he gives you the rose, I think it is one of the most sincere interactions in the game, especially because he's exactly the kind of idealistic character you want to believe can exist in real life.

3. Leliana's song is, hands down, one of the most moving parts of the game. Even my boyfriend liked that one, and he'd kind of been making fun of me for getting so into the game before. LoL But then he asked me if I could make her sing it again. ;)

4. I was really broken up when I had to convince Alistair to do the ritual with Morrigan. Even though it allowed me to get the ending I wanted (riding off into the sunset to rebuild the Grey Wardens while Anora is queen), it was very hard for me to ask him to do it. In the end, the only reason I did was because that was the ending I wanted so badly, and also because I was rather touched when Morrigan admitted that she valued my friendship, which made it easier to realize that one of her sincere wants out of the situation was for me to live.

That being said, I think that the game just has a plethora of emotional moments. I just finished playing it, and I am already going to play it again, but this time I'm going to explore more, try to find everything, and spec out my character with plans to take her into the expansion. :)

seems like a lot like Leliana's song. I was kinda surprised when she started singing,

A risk to make a video game character sing without it looking kinda stupid, but BioWare pulled it off pretty well.

I actually cried when (in the Calling) Kell kicked and chased Hafter to get him to live. Then Hafter was so happy that he got to go with Kell, tail wagging, so excited. I can see my own dogs doing that...I was tearing up...

I have a HNF character, romancing Alistair, whom I might end up sending to an ultimate sacrifice. I choke up when I think about her telling her mabari that he needs to stay at the gates because she wants him to watch over Alistair now, and that no one deserves the honor of king's hound more than he does. I don't imagine the conversation would go over any better than the one where she tells Alistair that everything she is doing is because she believes in him. I'm not sure I can do this ending, actually! Not without Scooby Doo'ing it afterwards!!

You've never heard a singer have a "singing voice" that sounded distinct from their "speaking" voice? Almost anyone with a strong accent will have a distinct difference between singing and speaking voices, especially if they've been coached to sing.

... all of the above and

- finding Cailans body at Ostagar. I was dissolved in tears.

I actually played through Return to Ostagar twice, with two different characters, because I wanted to have Alistair and Loghain with me once and see their reactions.

Upon Loghains remark what to do with Cailans body, I would have gladly thrown Loghain from the bridge, there and then. I am not a Loghain-hater per se, having read the books and being able to see his side. The man actually believes, he did what was necessary for Ferelden, even if that included some pretty hard and unpleasant decisions.

But his heartless remarks about his late king and son-in-law were simply too much!

... near the end and the camp is attacked by shrieks, one of whom is Tamlen, tortured and almost beyond recognition. My character said to him (and the tears were almost ready to start then) "I wish we'd never found that cave." To which Tamlen replies "Always... loved you...lethalon."

That was a moment when I wished I could make my character cry

Oh, seeing Tamlen again for sure - I very nearly did cry there.

Also Alistair's eulogy for my Dalish who romanced him on the ending where she sacrificed herself. She left him at the gates, he told her to come back to him so that he wouldn't lose another Warden and another friend, and she told him they both knew how this was going end. His soft "We won't forget your sacrifice" was very moving. Plus, the way he gave the Hinterlands to her keeper, and her reply that "she was our sister and daughter before she was your hero" was almost too much! Also in this playthrough, telling Dog "I guess this is goodbye, boy" was extremely sad!

Alistair breaking up with my Dalish on my first playthrough - even after I had done it once and knew it was coming. His "I would give it all up to have what I really wanted" just feels so real - bravo, Steve Valentine!

From the books - Kell trying to get Hafter to stay behind was heartwrenching, as was Fiona's goodbye to Maric and her son (Alistair, it has to be Alistair!!!).

Also not really sad, but epic: the speech Alistair gives to the troops. It gets me riled up and ready for battle every time. And he doubts that he'll be a good king. Pshaw. :D

Yes, direct to the point and filled with passion.  It's then, that you get the true measure of the guy...

Am I the only one who hated Katriel and thought she got exactly what she desereved?? Really?

No, you're not. And I don't blame Loghain either. I'm in the process of reversing my opinion on Loghain, or at least modifying it, in large part because of the books.

I cried in The Stolen Throne when Maric knighted Gareth. I think I was teary during each flashback from RtO, but did cry when finding Cailan's body.

Ostagar: My second time playing RTO n seeing Cailan's body again. I don't know why but that 1 gets me, maybe it's Alistair's comment about it cutting deeper for him, or after playing this so many times n knowing the impact of Loghain's treachery n how much it affected everyone. I don't know but RTO def has an impact on me.

I read The Stolen Throne after playing the game (not The Calling yet) and didn't reverse my opinion. Everything that he became is rooted in his character in the book, and nothing in the book absolves him of his actions in the game. He's just more understandable, he's still a paranoid bastard.

I teared up when Gareth was knighted as well.

Mine was finding Oren and Oriana's bodies. He was just a kid damn it! Bloody Howe!

Then finding Iona's daughter wandering all alone in the Alienage wondering when her (dead) mother is coming back from Highever. I was so sad, I couldn't do ANYTHING for the kid.

But the biggest thing that got me, was Leliana telling me of Marjolaine's betrayal. Especialy the part with the guards who did "terrible things" to her. She seemed very, very hurt. It made me very sad, and very, very mad. Too bad I couldn't travel to Orlais and torture the hell out of certain guards.

The comedy made me tear up a bit because I was laughing so hard, other than that I was unmoved by anyones plight in the game. Which might be why my characters get along so well with Morrigan.

I think that's why my opinion is modified at best. He comes across as far less of a power hungry bastard than he did in the game. His motivations are at least understandable, even if I disagree. And it actually did change how I viewed the events at Ostagar. I don't believe for a moment that he would have been so willing to abandon Rowan's son if he thought he could have saved him.
