Well, I'm a fairly new DA player (second time through right now), so this is probably something obvious, but here goes:

Why does my mage run into her AOE effects when I select her, then right click on the baddie to hit with a fireball/inferno?  She'll charge into WAY too close, then fire off the spell, then play pin cushion as she lays there stunned and on fire.   I have hold on, and I'm not clicking on the ground to move.  I'm guessing it has something to do with the tactics menu, but for the life of me, I don't know what.

Usually this happens if there is an obstacle in the way so your mage can´t fire directly.

If this is not the case, I don´t know. Doesn´t happen with me if there is no obstacle.

Hmmm...will give left click a go. Could be the obstacle thing, as I try to have her hang back from doorways.

As regards the fireball, if you right click on target and try to activate it out of range your mage will run forward until she/he is in range then fire it. By then the target is probably running closer to her and as it hits the target the mage gets knocked back too

I know, i was that mage:)

Hard to judge if you are in range or not...but if enemy are not moving try to get in range without being detected and fire it. Oh the joy to see 3 or 4 enemies get caught in the blast.

By the way i remember in 1 room there were 5 archers to my right who attacked me almost immediately (i didn't know ther were there)...i got fireball activated and fired it and because they were all close together killed all 5 at once..

Always aim at the floor rather than directly at an enemy unless they're a ranged type. Clicking on a melee enemy who then runs towards you can easily result in you both running into the fireball as MistySun said.

Okies, that makes sense. Thanks all! The fireball and inferno spells are making me feel all powerful. I've just got to learn to avoid exploding things that don't want exploding.
