I've gotten curious at my Motherboard Instruction Book's reference + Windows 7 Intel's reference to 'Optical Drives'. I'm getting the impression they might be an upgrade to current Drives/ROMS, but am not sure, for I don't know squat about them. I've found a SATA version of my current DVD-ROM, & this Optical Drive search result, & wonder what the difference is between them in performance, capabilities, & worth:

Non-Optical Drive: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16827106276

Optical(?) Drive: http://www.ecost.com...navid=155440009

Also wonder if there's any easy way to tell for sure if a Drive is Optical or old Reader Arm type.

Lastly, it seems Windows 7 has some sort of 'CD/DVD Authoring' feature in it & I would appreciate intel on it as well as to what it does & if it's worth getting an Optical Drive for.

I'm seeking this intel to try to find out if Optical is worth upgrading to when my current DVD-ROM goes out after I get my new puder up & running. (Reusing my DVD-ROM for next build to finish up the rest of it's lifespan before upgrading it to maximize the use of the bucks that was spent on it. Waste not, want not.)

Many thanks for your time. Image IPB (Neither Drive in the links above is a final choice. Just need to know which type of Drive/ROM I wanna eyeball as a choice, then I can research SATA versions for a possible final choice.)

All CD/DVD/Blu-Ray drives are optical since they're read with a laser. 'Optical Drive' is a newish term because typing CD/DVD/Blu-Ray every time is a pain. The other types of drives (mechanical hard drives, flash memory drives) don't use lasers.

As for Windows CD/DVD authoring that's been around since XP. Before that if you had a CD-RW you had to use Nero to get any data onto the disks.

Does that mean both of the above drives are optical? I thought reader arm drives were still the common ones?

So, CD Authoring is just a fancy-shmancy alternate way of saying disk-burning? Figures. I have yet to ever have a need to burn CDs or DVDs. If I do, I can borrow a moment with my Grandpa's DVD-RW rather than paying extra bucks for a feature I might not ever use.

Many thanks for the intel!

Yes and Yes.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'reader arm drives'. Has there been a development lately to allow the laser head to stay still? I've never heard anyone mention it so I guess any benefits it brings are fairly small ones.

EDIT: I  think Windows Vista may have added a DVD Film creation capability so you can create title menus like on DVD films.

I dunno if Optical Drives still use a reader arm or not, but they're annoying little buggers because they're usually the part that fails 1st that makes a Drive/ROM need replaced. It would be cool if Optical Drives outmode that design, but I don't know. I'm not kidding when I say I don't know squat about this. I'm a ROM/Drive Padawan.

If CD/DVD Authoring is indeed disk burning, I wonder if it requires a RW Drive/ROM in addition to Optical Drive power, or if this W7 Authoring thing is outmoding Drive/ROM RWs?

Since both of the above linked Drives are Optical, i'll go for the 1st one, for it was the one I was eyeballing 1st. It's like my current DVD-ROM, but SATA. I've been using my 1st ever SATA device for awhile, (HDD) & i've been loving it. I'm makin all my future upgrades SATA & striving to help outmode IDE. IDE can keep VHS Tapes company.

Many thanks for the intel! Image IPB

Another semi-related question i've been wondering about, are Floppy Drives worth bothering to stick into a puder anymore? I haven't used mine in years.
