[Edit: solution given by Fen Tabris]

I got the following error every time I tried to run the Generate VO utility on any conversation node while running Windows 7.

x: 12:50:35 - Failed to do Local post of placeholder voice over data for conversation keomos
x: 12:50:35 - RPU process failed with a return code of '1'.
i: 12:50:35 - no FESL allocator defined
x: 12:50:35 - Could not speak text.
i: 12:50:33 - Please wait while generating VO for conversation "keomos"

Solution: Before running the Generate VO command, Windows' Narrator must be turned on. (Windows key + U -> Start Narrator) or (Start -> Control Panel -> Ease of Access -> Ease of Access Center -> Start Narrator)

This is related to the robo-brad voice (Generic voice) not being generated. What version of the toolset are you using, and have you done any tried any custom VO yet to see if you get the same results?

I'm using version 1.0.1008 with DB version 1.0.0.194.

I got the above-quoted errors first when I was trying to do all robovoice as well as when I did both pre-recorded and robovoice.

You mentioned trying in Demo and your own module, but I'm pretty sure the VO generation *only* works within the Single Player module. I've never gotten it to work in my sub-module.

I can't get it to work in modules other than SP either, but I also don't get errors, and the log says VO has been successfully posted to local. So I don't think it's that...

Robert Moon, did you try looking in AppData/Local/Temp/DragonAgePlaceholderVO to see if it's there and if there's something in?

Also, did you try with a conversation from Single Player? if that works, than it's something related to the module; if not...

Just tried to Generate VO in the single player campaign, and got the same error:
x: 05:27:40 - Failed to do Local post of placeholder voice over data for conversation arl100cr_isolde
x: 05:27:40 - RPU process failed with a return code of '1'.
i: 05:27:40 - no FESL allocator defined
x: 05:27:40 - Could not speak text.
i: 05:27:36 - Please wait while generating VO for conversation "arl100cr_isolde"

I looked in /AppData/Local/Temp/DragonAgePlaceholderVO/en-us/ and found a 0-second, 56 byte file
arl100cr_isolde/118210_m.wav

So it sorta-kinda fired -- but something is effing up the process. I googled "no FESL allocator defined," and I couldn't find anything.

I wonder if it has anything to do with my installation path of the tooset, which is
E:/Games/Dragon Age/tools/DragonAgeToolset.exe

Perhaps the VO program doesn't use relative paths and expects you to have installed it in the default path... Grrr. Very frustrating.

Sorry guys if I'm wrong, still new at this. But are you all saying that we cant make a generic VO in our own modules? But than Cid was able to made a tutorial of making a VO for his own mod. I have an almost similar problem as well. Here's my log:

My workaround with it was to put a custom VO of my own instead of generating a generic one.

@ ZackArnold: all I know for sure is that if I try to generate VO of vanilla files in any sub-module, the VO generation doesn't work and I have to switch back to Single Player to generate VO properly. Whether that carries over to custom .dlg files, I couldn't say.

Ok, I managed to fix mine. Not sure if it's related with you guys problem because my error log show that "Voice does not exist" which I suspected is due to my own Windows XP instead of the toolset. I was missing SAPI5.dll, fixing that allows me to generate the VO now.

Hm, one thing I noticed now that I've (finally) gotten back around to conversation writing was that I had to have Windows text-to-speech on as it uses this voice for Robobrad-ing. In Win7 (I'm also on 64-bit), this was Control Panel>Ease of Access>Ease of Access Center>Start Narrator. Once I did that, my error changed from return code of '1' to E: 21:37:53 - RPU process failed with a return code of '-1073741811'. Then found the directory was set to read-only, I undid that and now Robobrad is wonderful (well, as wonderful as the robo-voice can get).

Probably you should put a tag [SOLVED] at the 1st part of your thread title, then copy and paste the solution at the bottom part of your OP

Have the same problem. Turning on Narrator didn't work (running Win XP). VO does not generate, neither in Single player nor in custom modules.

Any oner solutions perhaps?

I am unable to generate VO but I don't have the "Could not speak text" issue. I have checked in "c:\\Documents and Settings\\[username]\\Local Settings\\Temp\\DragonAgePlaceholderVO" and the .txt and .wav.ph files are being created correctly. I have tested the .wav.ph files and they play the correct sound. The problem is that no .FSB file is being created and the only error I get is:

RPU process failed with a return code of '1'. I have tried running "VO_FMODProjectCreator.exe" from a command prompt and this does create a .FSB file but for some reason the toolset is unable to do this. Please help!!!
