How does anyone play this past 40 hours?!

I've been wondering.  I've heard on twitter, guys boasting of playing this game 200+ hours.  How is that even possible?  Even completing more of the sidequests than I already have, I could probably top it off at MAYBE 60 hours of this game with my character.

And also, when I look up my character stats, it says I've explored like 90% of the world, but have completed lik 50% of the game.  WTF?  I've ENDED the game, how much MORE game could I possibly play?

The only other way I could explore more, is by creating other characters and doing their origin stories.  But doesn't that reset my stat counter to 0%?

Anyways...  I applaud guys who are gung ho in replaying the game for the Nth time.  It's nice that Bioware went through the trouble to do that...  But for me, it's like reading a good book.  I've played it for 2.5 months.  It's time to move onto another story.

I might replay it as a different character and class someday when it's slow, but I've never understood the appeal of going back and REDOING all those dungeons, fights and etc.  I'm sure the game is a LITTLE bit different, but is it really honestly different enough to feel like a whole new game?

Hmmm... seems I actually made two topics in one email... Answer as you please. :)

It took me a long time to figure it out, but I think the difference is that you have it on a console and those people with 100+ hours are on the PC. The percentage of the game completed is talking about achievements, not actual game percentage. And no starting a new character won't reset your percentage to 0, though you will obviously be starting a character at level 1. The origins are all different, and the rest of the game has choices you can make differently thus changing the game a bit during each play through, so if you've only played one character you haven't even seen half the game.

Edit: Or I could stand corrected since it appears you have the PC version, not a console one. That's what I get for not checking. :D Really though, it's taking me longer to play through once on PC than it did my very first time on Xbox even though I know where everything is already. It's the pausing during combat I think that drives the time up.

How do we play this? Well with water pack filled with beer and the straw taped to the side of our mouth, one hand holding a slice of pizza while the other is on the mouse. ;)

Well for me it's really just a nice distraction. Even I will re-read books that I love after a time. Some of us are achievement ****s and others just like the RP factor. It's just whatever floats the boat so to speak.

Side quests, I believe. Bioware is known for a generous helping of side quests. Though I'm not sure how the game % is calculated, perhaps it's based on things you missed based on paths you chose? I imagine a lot of my play time comes from talking to everyone and reading several of the codex's. Replaying is fun in these games because you can try out new things, as several quests have multiple options for what to do, how to treat people. Try out new character builds, party combination's. If you are into that sort of thing anyway. If you just want to know how the story plays out and nothing more then I suppose you're done. :(

Huh? It took me 65 hours to beat on my first playthrough.  Do you skip a lot of the sidequests, skip dialogue?

I didn't get the achievement for fully exploring the world until my second character who was a rogue. I was doing the side quests that you get in Denerim if you have pickpocketing/lockpicking available. (Areas I didn't have access to on my warrior on the first playthrough.) That's when the achievement popped up.

Minus the accidental deletion of my character and fervent reattempts of many battles, in-game time came out around 65-70 hours with almost all side quests completed. Overall, I think I spent over 150 hours playing it (not the overall in-game character time).

If you look at your heroic accomplishments tab, you'll see that the % completed is for all characters played, while most of the rest of it is below a line for that character only. So the way you get % completed higher is by running other characters. Not only different origin stories, but different romances, different plot decisions taken, different specs unlocked and so on. It's fine if for you it's one playthrough and done -- that's cool. But there's a lot of content that is being missed that way, and that's what the counter measures.

The way that playhours get jacked up is related to a number of things, including the mode of difficulty, the amount of time you spend in dialogues, whether you romance people (and how many), how much time you spend reading the codex entries, how many sidequests you do, are you doing the DLC content before you finish and so on. It's possible to "complete" a playthrough of the game in a relatively short period of time if all you do is fight, you "esc" through the dialogues, and you don't read the codex. On the other hand, it's possible to spend a ton of time doing the same content if you do all of the above. So the playtime can vary wildly depending on how you decide to play the game.

You have a thread title that asks how anyone can play past 40 hours, but you admit you could play to 60 hours in your first post.

Nice.

Wow. Thanks for all the replies, that answered alot of questions. As for why it took me only 40+ hours to finish. Yes I did talk to everyone, and made sure I talked to my crew ALL the time and made sure they all adored me by the end... And yes I romanced both girls and finally had to choose one. The only thing I DIDNT do is the codex, and a 4 or 5 sidequests that I just got incredibly bored with.

Perhaps I WILL play it over again as a rogue, or blood mage, those two classes really interested me. And I wouldn't mind finding out what would've happened if I chose the other girl... And didn't make my arrangement with Morigan towards the end there.

I LOVED the game and will play it over again; but for now, Mass Effect is coming and I gotta get ready for that!!!

Yeah I expect a lot of repeat playthroughs will be suspended when ME2 comes along, and then people will get back to DA when the expac comes.

Took me 86 hours in my first playthrough according to the game stats, I took my time and completed most of the sidequests, but just 2 of my companions' personal quests (Morrigan & Leliana). So I guess it could easily go 90+

I got 60 hours out of my first char doing almost all of the sidequests, although I did skip alot of dialogue when I just wanted to speed things up at times, so if I was to listen to it all instead of reading some of it and skipping then it might have lasted a bit longer. But yea I think people are exagguerating at 200 hours (in a single playthrough) unless they have the walk button on all the time...

Also I ignored the codex so thats another chunck if you're interested.

Reading the Codex and actually listening to the spoken dialog, not just skipping it as soon as I've read it.
Those two did the trick for me.

LOL I don't think I could bear to read the entire codex. I want to get into the action and the story!! Maybe if the codex was a printed book, I'd read it on the plane, or while sitting in the coffee shop... but reading a book on the computer screen is rather dull to me.

I guess skipping dialogue and not doing side quests would cut the time taken down!

My first game took 60hrs give or take and I didn't reach lvl20, but I'm taking more time with the current run, listening to the party bickering and talking more to everyone in camp, so I can see where 120+ could come from, but 200+ maybe if you got every possible 'bicker' combination and all the side quests and all the companion quests.

Unless you've consulted the DragonAge wiki, I doubt you have come close to finding all the side-quests in the game. Even finding out how to unlock all the specializations for each class can take some time. And if you're trying to max out the level of your character, that includes a lot of walking around Ferelden hoping to get the random encounters.

In conclusion, there's easily 60 hours that can be spent on one playthrough; unless you're skipping through all the dialogue.

First playtrough: 100 hours. (99 hours, 51 minutes before final boss battle)

Current playtrough: 70 hours, @ Ortan Thaig, almost no side quests, only Denerim left after Deep roads.

I have no idea why I take this long, I don't even read all codex entries. Only the interesting ones.

First playthrough: 116.5 hours. And I didn't even get the "easily sidetracked" achievement.

I read a lot of entries. Dialogue with everyone. And I do all the sidequests I think I can justify my PC doing (this last time he didn't touch the 'rogue' ones. Body disposal wasn't in his interests. Nor did he get 'too' wrapped up in either the Blackstone or Mages' Collective, though he did little ones of both on the way).

I do think there's a big difference in playtime from the PC version to the console version. I have no idea why that is. Maybe it's the mentality of the gamers. Maybe there's something in the architecture. Maybe both.

I have 103+ hours and am still playing the first time. I dutifully open every chest (boring) and speak to everyone. I'm sure I could go faster in combat. But, I roleplay to the extent that I "pretend" that battles are life threatening -- and don't rush in -- get killed -- reload. Rather, I try to win them all (not too hard) which takes a little extra time, maybe.

Well I AM playing the PC one... guess I didn't dig around for as many sidequests as I thought I had.
