Every time I go back to Mass Effect, even 3, I'm remind that it's just better than 95% of the games out there.
if you base this on gameplay and mechanics like biotic powers and the ME-Universe as a whole, i can agree, but if you go into the story, you are loosing me (hell, good old KOTOR is ways better, it even has a "Luke I AM YOUR FATHER"-Like moment that was really well done with your character bein Darth Revan!) as that is simply one garbled mess IMHO (everything is hopeless and dark etc. - sorry, that just takes all the fun away IMHO, as it feels like you are not making a difference anyway (you get told you are, but you never see it - like the Krogan landing an Palaven or a massive Geth-Fleet dropping of people at the Crucible site (also that thing was a bad idea, too!)etc.)...it just doesn't fit with the rest of the games
greetings LAX
ps: i would love to see that like you (because then i would have left BSN long ago and would only check back once or twice a month for new info on DA:I etc. and not be here posting in the hope that bioware at least reads some postings/topics etc.)

ME is most certainly not hopeless and dark. It has dark moments, yes, but it is not an overtly depressing narrative.

Maybe better than 20 % of the games "out there"

It is overrated when it comes to the plot, this trilogy was never a masterpiece of writing, but only when ME3 came out people realized it.
It's pretty overrated in general and not just in story. It took them three games to add basic TPS mechanics like rolling and cover to cover and it's most hyped feature being choices that carry over across games turned to be a complete dud.
It's only worthy of praise for the TPS/Spellcasting hybrid mechanic because otherwise, unless you're a big fan of the setting and characters this series doesn't offer much that pure TPS and RPGs don't do better.
Yeah ME is really bad now that the ending sucked, how odd.
Benezia still had somee of the worst dialouge and worst fight mechanics, even compared to kai leng.
There is truth to this.

I can agree with that, but her motivations and characterization was so many leagues above kai leng that it ended up not becoming much of an issue.BaladasDemnevanni wrote...

Kai Leng was a nemesis, and he was pathetic. These are not a good combination.
The fighting mechanics was an issue for the entire game not just benezia figtht.

Well, thankfully, Quarians and Humans coulndt have childs together like Vulcans and Humans in Star Trek. At least the first game tried to be Sci Fi aside from gameplay elements like the fully armed Asari Clones.
But then came Mass Effect 2 with the Space Jesus Project, high heels in combat, breather mask in hazardous envirments, lizards fighting mercs with Kung Fu...
The downfall of this series began with Mass Effect 2.

Not overrated, but underrated by some of the so called "fans" that frequent the game's official forums.
I dare say, I am tempted to agree, and I am a staunch hater of the endings and have been critical of the story since ME2. There is certainly a fair bit warranting criticism but sometimes people lost sight the games are still great for what they are, myself included. It took me forever to play ME3 because of my disappointment, but after doing so, well, I regret waiting so long, even if I am annoyed by your Kai Lengs, Earth loving and the endings. There is still a lot to love.
I may not pick up ME4 because of BioWare's perceived direction. However, the ME trilogy as it stands today is still solid and thoroughly entertaining.

Last big space opera in media I'd say would be Farscape. (which I note has the ugly male aliens , hot alien women trope as well....)
(On other websites, I've seen ME used as an example of the classic 70s/80s version of space opera - a poster was making a list of good space opera examples and there isn't that much recently...) and she used this for her criteria
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aliens who AREN'T just monsters to shoot at, but are fully fledged characters.
Humans who AREN'T the dominant force in the galaxy, but are one of many races coexisting.
Awesome spaceships. Galaxy-scale civilizations. Epic scope, high stakes.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For example, Halo has as many alien races if not more as ME and the stakes are pretty high (destruction of the human race) but pretty much you're shooting them BECAUSE they're aliens. Halo falls firmly under military SF.
Seriously, it's weird but other than Farscape, what was the last space opera title you can think of?
(Although the tem space opera has become a useless term since apparently, according to wikipedia, Dead Space is space opera)
