I would lock this thread. i do sound like an idiot but this how i feel after reading the title.
Let me mention overated games this gen:
Uncharted 3 which was so NOT to 2's level, god of war all pf them, Halos all of them, all of assassin's creed games, CoD, gears of wars, Grand theft auto .
Wanna know what all these overated games have in common? Once you ve played them once you will not play them again, you ve seen everything there is. Once you ve played one part of the series you need not to play the next installemnt, it will be the same.
Unlike Mass effect games which gave me reasons to play the HELL out of them again again and made me fit into shepards shoes (do not know the exact expression but i ll use it anyway for the goofy part).
With mass effect i had a reason why to shoot people or why i had to care about characters.

well, while i don't know most of those games and i can agree on their replay-value (if you - like me - give a crap about those achievment systems) is low, i would simply can't agree with what you say about Assassin's Creed (except maybe the last one - i was simply to drawn out for me, but otherwise still a good game (and the other's before that were nice, too, if you don't compare them to games like: Dragon Age, Mass Effect (1 and 2 - 3 is worse!), the witcher, KOTOR, Alpha Protocol etc.

BUT: Those Games (Assassin's Creed, COD etc.) are not aimed at the same people, those games are more casual fun (that's what ruins ME3 - it is casual fun, no depth what so ever IMHO...unless you played the games before and even then it comes up wanting (to be a better game)!)

greetings LAX
ps: close your own thread(s) - sorry but demanding to close a thread is flaming and i hate that! (you can voice dissagreement, no one stops you - as long as you stay on the level (i don't flame you, do i?))

What kind of depth are we talking about here??

i hope this is a joke.If you haven't played a game you have no right to judge it or compare it to another game.Even worse when you compare them to garbage like Alpha protocol

One asked me if i played all these games.
Yes i ve played most of them. I stopped bothering after assassin's creed brotherhood since it was the last as 2. the same game. Halo is the typical FPS with a so called story some dare to say it is epic.
I own all uncharted games i enjoyed them of course BUT seriously they do not a hold a candle to Mass effect.
If you ask me what game is stuck into my mind i would say mass effect. Uncharted barely comes to mind although i ve played Uncharted 2 5 times.
α protocol... have you played it????
It has the same flaws gameplay wise as mass effect 1.
it is a great RPG and it left me speachless at the depth of dialoguechoice-consequence.
It is very hypocritic to love Me1 but to hate α protocol, i hope you are not this type of person.

i ll guess the answer which i also happen to agree with:
Depth.. you actually develop a bond with shepard or hawke or warden which you cannot develop with master chief (who is mute until halo 4) , nathan drake, desmond marcus fenix , booker , that random skyrim dude etc. While you can develop bonds with these characters i mentioned the bond is nearly not as strong as with Shepard , hawke, warden, Revan etc.
This is due the core of gameplay that literaly forces you to become the protagonist. When you play Mass effect for example you really are Shepard. When you play Deus ex you are Denton or Jensen. Every single choice you make is you. You assume another "you" and you act accordingly.
You laugh with the jokes, get mad with misshappenings, feel the tension, "cry" when something sad happens etc.
This can happen with other games too but in a lesser lesser degree.
Real role playing games (and not the ones who are called this way just because they have skill trees or stats) do that.
They are not just "games" that make you shoot or kill stuff. You kill stuff for a reason.
Dialogue is another form of gameplay in these games, one does not just presses the skip dialogue button, if he did than he should play another game unless he had istened to that dialogue a dozen times (i still do not skip the dialogue)
They give you a reason. They are interactive entertainment that are targeted to that gamer who actually can epathise with them. It is not by chance that usually lower ages do not play rpgs. Myself started to really enjoy rpgs after some time. They really are interactive entertainment and not just video games.
I prefer playing  rpgs to watching movies due to this interactivity they offer.

With all that said i do enjoy other games too. But they do not have that same depth.

Not necessarily. These stuff are different for different people. For example I felt more bonding with Lara Croft even though I decide none of her actions, than Shepard even though I decided all of her actions. Just because I decide the actions of somebody doesn't make me bonded to someone. It depends on the execution. It was slightly better in ME3, but horrible in ME 1 and 2. I'd rather have a living character whose actions I don't decide than a wooden statue decided by my actions. Now aybe you'd say why play RPGs then? To which I'd reply because I like the story and universe it creates.

This is due the core of gameplay that literaly forces you to become the protagonist. When you play Mass effect for example you really are Shepard. When you play Deus ex you are Denton or Jensen. Every single choice you make is you. You assume another "you" and you act accordingly.

Same thing. Depends on the execution, and not solely because you decide the action. Sometimes I laughed with characters whose actions I didn't decide. Sometimes I didn't feel anything fo a character even though he was supposedly y avatar.  Like I said above, I felt the punch in my guts when I saw Connor returning to his village and finding it deserted save for a drunken old man.. than I felt for Shepard's "sorrow" at not saving Thessia.

Real role playing games (and not the ones who are called this way just because they have skill trees or stats) do that.
They are not just "games" that make you shoot or kill stuff. You kill stuff for a reason.

Putting it that way, all games have you kill stuff fo a reason.

With all that said i do enjoy other games too. But they do not have that same depth.

Depths can mean different things. Just because a game doesn't have choices and customizable dislogs doesn't mean it cannot have depth in other fields. That is why I asked the question in the first place. For example, I found that assassins creed has a far deeper storyline than ME and its enemies have more complex motives that lolindoctrination and synthetics will kill everyone. The details it puts in recreating historical cities to the last inch year after year is amazing. I still remember reading an article about how a few professors in Harward used AC2's Venice as an educational model to show students how the city actually was in ancient times. How does that not count as "depth" ?

What I'm saying is while I do enjoy RPs and ME too I think just because they have branching storyline they are automatically superior to games with linear storylines. Linear games can and do outclass RPGs in other aspects. They can have depth in other egards. I'll probably get lynched because I'm saying this in an RPG forum :P But.. a more appropriate remark would be to say that okay, I prefer RPGs to other games because they suit my tastes, than saying linear games lack depth and are for the casual market and RPGs are very deep and for us hardcore players don't you think?

well CODis complete sh*t and they sold what? 11.5 million copies the first day

^this isn't opinion, it is fact

so that will give a idea how more sales do not mean a better game

This principle can be applied to anything. Is a movie automatically better because it has high box office numbers? Should I now see Transformers as a great movie because it made over 700 million worldwide? The answer is no.

Perhaps this is heresy, but the plot of ME2 never bothered me much. It's a non-traditional video game structure, more like a TV series or a series of comic books than a singular plot. It's like saying TV is bad for not being a movie. I thought the way events played out and the experience of them worked very well as a total package.

The immersion, characters, making you care about the world - I think that's enough to validate the existance of ME2 in the series.

I agree.

It was unconventional and certainly not to everyone's taste, but I enjoyed the structure they went with.

ME2 was the only one with a "Mission Accomplished" screen which I liked.

IIRC, it's only the CRPG fanatics who hated that. PnP RPG players didn't mind since skipping over returning to base and so forth is pretty much how PnP games roll.

Yep. You know the best thing about Mass Effect? The multiplayer, that's right. A single player RPG and the best thing is the horde mode, which was supposed to be secondary to the main game.

That says it all really.

when did i say that i love ME1?ME1 sucks."Alpha Protcol is a great RPG and it left me speechless at the depth of dialogue choice and consequences"
I honestly have to laugh here. Its gameplay sucks, graphics suck, bugs are bethesda level.
What's wrong with you bro?Why do you even compare Uncharted,Halo and Assassin's Creed to Mass Effect? These 3 are obviously  better than Mass Effect.

It is official. You are trolling me.  Then what are doing in here? do you have an account in naughty dog's forums? cause i see you in here all the time the past year.
Problematic. too many variables, too many variables.
Only 2 choices:
Either you are a super time waster who has nothing to do and visit this forum and even you do not know ahy you do this
Or
you actually like mass effect. .
Anything else is idiotic. There is sinply NO reasoning to visit Mass effect forums in DAILY basis and claim the sentence in bold.

I judge games based on sales. These 3 win

*facepalm*  I don't even want to know what kind of music you like.
