My first playthrough of this game is almost over and I am a human noble, a warrior, I use a sword and shield and basically always do the right thing, when possible.

I have to decide now to be either a mage or rogue, elf, human or dwarf, what origin, and what class specialization. In this playthrough I am going to be a bad person and I'm probably not gonna use Morrigan, shale, or Buddy(dog)
as I have used them my whole first playthrough. Also, If I am a rogue I will most likely be an archer since I havent tried out bows yet.

So which would be a more enjoyable character mage or rogue?

Depends on your play style really, and what you prefer to do.

Archer/mage be similar as in your not up close and personal...but its whatever floats your boat really.

why not make both?

An evil rogue is fitting...especially if you come from a troubled background such as the City Elf or Dwarven Commoner. However, Mages can also have chips on their shoulders due to the restrictions of the Chantry - and, you can play as an Elf Mage to make it racial + anti-mage.

Well, frankly, a Mage would be much, much more powerful. If you aren't going to use Morrigan, and you are going to be evil, you are going to need someone to substitute for Wynne (considering she's pure good). You definitely need at least one mage in your party--so, if you won't keep Morrigan, and you want to be evil, make yourself a mage.

I personally enjoy using a rogue, because it isn't as boring as being a tank and it isn't as powerful as a mage.

As the above stated, try both. But you may enjoy mage a lot if you enjoy doing massive AoE type of spells.

i would suggest trying the mage through the second time thrugh, since you can become a blood mage and would work perfect with doing the wrong things this round. Also i suggest you use oshgren, Sten and Lelianna unless you wish to use alistar. That way you always have a mage in play. then Leliana could be your rogue and sten your warrior then the chpoice is up to you and Osghren has the next highest attack points to shale and sten.

Mage! Big fun, you get AoE, Hexes, and Walking Bomb. It's like getting in touch with your inner Michael nuke-the-world Bay. (They also give you a nice little counter that tells how much friendly fire damage you've done!)

ROGUE.
ONLY class that can open locks.
ONLY class to have anything akin to the non-existent Invisibility spell
Can be a decent CC fighter.
With Arrow of Slaying, can pop out of nowhere, deal a HUGE amount of damage.  If that wasn't enough to deal with the problem, just slip out of LOS and go back into Stealth.

Recon rules!  Urrah!

I am still in my first playthrough as a Dalish Elf Ranger. My party had consisted of Morrigan, Allistar, and Zevran for most of the game and all was good. Though I really regret missing the chance at getting Sten into my party(wouldve replaced Zevran)... Anyway I am finding it very fun, Using Falon'Din's Reach(Tier 7 Dalish Longbow) I found early in the game(spent every point for several levels into dex so I could use it) and it still fells ogres with ease. Using Spiders as backup and generally killing everything within sight.

The point everyone made about the mages is a valid one though. Either be a mage yourself, keep Morrigan in your party, or be somewhat good and recruit wynne(never used her myself though).

It sounds like mage would be the best choice for me, could anyone tell me best race, specilization, good spells?

I love spells and there is a huge variety to mage builds. But, the pure utility of a rogue is hard to beat. Go for high cunning and you can pass every skill check in the game. Also, rogues get a unique quest line. In many ways I preferred playing a rogue. There are some great threads on rogue builds (including the Discobird dual wielding dps calculations sheet). The dwarf commoner and city elf origins are really fun too.

There is no best race to go with, they all even out in the end. However, I went with human for mine and it is going wonderfully. Try to unlock Blood Mage as it's a really strong line and with that you can go with whatever else you want. You get an AoE spell that drains their health as well as works as a mass paralysis.

I would like to recommend the Frost spells as they're quite useful and the paralysis spells as well. Mass Paralysis has made some battles a breeze to do and if you have that one Blood Mage AoE paralysis-drain spell, you can keep entire groups in place for the whole battle. One point in Heal (even though you'll have the Blood Mage leech health spell eventually if you roll with that) never hurts either, especially when first starting out.

Lots of guides out there, but just go with what feels comfortable.

I made the mistake of doing a second play-through as a Warrior after my initial Mage build.

Very boring. Not my style of play at all. I found myself quickly controlling Morrigan most of the time through the game anyway, so I gave up that build and decided to go back and create my 'perfect mage' now that I had a few hundred hours of experience under my belt, in preparation for all the extra content.

So you know my answer, but I'll add on top of that that you should have gone Mage or Rogue to begin with. :P

Nah my first playthrough of any game I'm always the warrior type character just my style of play just like yours is mage, that said I also enjoy being mages, just after I have already been a melee fighter.

In all my years of gaming, and beleive me I have a lot of years behind me in gamming, I have never been able to play a mage. Now this is me personally.

I'm playing my first Rogue.

I'm usually a Archer/Ranger, so had to go Rogue just to be a Ranger.

My first game was an elven mage. Took the whole fire and frost lines. Also the crushing prison line. Shapechanger and Arcane Warrior for specs, though the first was for the Con boost. I did take all of AW though. Nothing like being untouchable in melee and being able to out-fight the hordes. Then you turn on the magic for the bosses "Boom."

Rogue is fun, but nothing compares in terms of sheer versatility and variety to mage in this game. Besides, you can honestly make perfectly good rogues out of Leliana or Zev. You can make yourself a better combat mage than Morrigan, and Wynne is never a combat mage (though she's necessary for the healing line).

In my opinion, Cone of Cold is essential. The disruption it causes as well as the area it effects makes it both an excellent opening spell and very usable in the middle of a fight. Setting your melee warriors to use any of their 'guaranteed critical moves' (Mighty Blow, Critical Strike, etc.) on 'Immobilised' enemies means they'll automatically move to shatter anyone you freeze.

The Mind Blast spell line is amazing as well. Mind Blast is a lifesaver, and Crushing Prison/Force Field are great ways to keep bosses/mages under control while you thin the ranks of their minions. You can also combine Force Field, then Crushing Prison on the same target for a great opening punch against distant mobs of enemies.

The Sleep line of spells is awesome too. Hitting mobs with Sleep + Horror/Waking Nightmare is an amazing way to send mobs into disarray without harming any friends who might be in the middle of them, only eclipsed by the Blood Mage's Blood Wound.

The Animate Dead spell line I enjoyed, although you have to be careful with Virulent Walking Bomb, lest a chain reaction you start ends up beating the health out of your melee characters. Animate Dead itself I find immensely useful because it provides an extra, disposable target. Any Warrior you resurrect will come with Threaten as well, extending their usefulness in that area. The reserved mana that it comes with is a bit limiting early on, but late-game is a negligible trade-off.

Spell Might is a Sustained Ability that is worth a mention not only because it makes all your spells more powerful (while making them cost more), but because it is a part of two Spell Combinations, one of them the most devastating spell in the game. Using Animate Dead while Spell Might is active pops up a noticeably tougher punching bag for your enemies, with more abilities (summoning a mage sometimes will net you a handy healer/buffer with Arcane Shield, which is very useful). But the big ones is when you cast Blizzard and Tempest in the same area while Spell Might is active, which nets you the gigantic tornado of energy known as Storm of the Century. Don't let your mates walk into it.

Honestly, there are heaps of great spells, and lots of awesome ways to play with them, but those are the ones I use the most. Don't underestimate the lower-level single-target spells such as Lightning or Winter's Grasp either, the cheapness and quick recharge times make them perfect for keeping your damage output up between the big ones.

Just remember to get Herbalism as a skill and pump out those Lyrium Potions. You will definitely need them.

Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage is basically Very Easy Mode. Which is why I downloaded a balance mod so I could play my favorite build and still find the game challenging.

Homeless Cheese, like you, I also prefer playing a melee warrior type in most games. In DAO, my first character was a Human Female Noble Sword & Shield Warrior who always does the right thing. Typical heroic tank type.

For my second run, I went with a Male Elf Mage, with Arcane Warrior specialization, who does what he wants because he was tired of being treated like a slave by humans, and imprisoned by the circle. Sought revenge and always sided with the stronger side instead of doing what was right.

Arcane Warrior meant I could play more like a warrior when I wanted to, or hang back and act like a mage. I personally went with a Primal-focused mage, rather than going for a Arcane Warrior optimized build, and it was a lot of fun. Toss a few fireballs, cleave a few heads. As long as something was getting killed (preferably humans), it was a good day. :)

I'm playing a rogue now, but I'm not enjoying it as much. It's far too similar to Warrior, IMHO. Just a faster Warrior that can pick locks. *yawn*
