i did my first playthrough micromanaging everything, but it took me about 230 hours, all good fun, but going through a second time i want to use the tactics system a bit more, and i'm having some trouble.

first of all, i have bethany set to defensive, and i have her first tactic set up for her to attack the target of hawke, but she only fires off one attack every few seconds. is there a way to improve this?

reason she's on defensive is i want to keep my party contained in bottleneck positions, with a rogue hawke kiting enemies to them, but without having to use hold all the time - the way they stay put when she stealths is enough.

i'd like to keep from using the command-all (double shoulder button) option, because it seems to over-ride tactics altogether and she ends up not healing anyone if i forget it's on.

thanks

Check out SuicidalBaby's Tactics guide. You'd probably be better off using 'aggressive' for mages as well, but anyway, I'd suggest you go through the guide.

thanks, i've got my tactics running pretty smooth now, which brings me on to my next big problem:

effing rogues.

first playthrough i played a force/spirit mage and managed to hold/exploding bomb my way through everything. i used three mages and one rogue, on nightmare.

this time, now that bethany's dead, i'm using three rogues and one warrior, also on nightmare, and i'm having no problems except when enemy rogues turn up - all of a sudden it seems like this is the only thing the game can throw at me - no cooldown stealth, no cooldown potions, a very tiny window of when I can stagger them, taunt rarely seems to make any difference re threat, same with throw the gauntlet, plus they can one-hit everyone but my warrior.

besides changing my party, is there a way to stop this feeling like pure cheesy difficulty that i'm not seeing?

May be try using decoy and/or stealth if you get the feeling that they are coming for your rogues, wait till they backstab the decoy and then take them out. Vendetta, assassination, twin fangs can be quite useful to dispatch them quickly when you finally get those talents. Remaining obscured might also help somewhat. Inconspicuous is also quite useful for losing threat. I guess it's always going to feel somewhat cheesy for your party setup.

well i specced out of archery, except for pinning shot, and deeper into my second specialization, then rejigged tactics to get them staggered asap, with blood feud / backlash / assassinate to finish em off quickly, doing much better now, thanks for the reply.

edit: also, i've set each rogue to stealth as soon as an enemy rogue appears, which solves the threat issue for the most part
