As a new player I would recommend going to the Circle Tower first and get Wynne who is a great dedicated healer. Do the Broken Circle quest line there
Then I do:
Redcliff/Andraste's Ashes
Brecillian Forest/Nature of the Beast
Orzammar/Paragon of Her Kind
Denerim is a great place to stop in and out of and pick up quests along the way. I used it when I needed a break from the long quest lines above.

Typically, Redcliffe/Circle first/second (doesn't matter order, but never do circle last), Elves, Urn, Dwarves, and then continue with the rest of the storyline.
That's what I've always run. I've never had the need to pull back or anything.

The dalish (7+), mage tower (6+) and redcliffe (6+) are the best spots to start. Of the three I'd say start with mage tower for Wynne (spirit healer specced mage) and the bonus stats available in the fade.
Dwarf and Denerim have a min level floor of 10 (all monsters are at least lvl 10+) I think. You can go to Denerim to shop through, the dwarf zone has a rather nasty fight before you even enter the city.

After leaving Lothering go to Denerim first and get all the side quests you can,
http://dragonage.wik...om/wiki/Denerim
http://dragonage.wik...rim-Side_Quests
Do as many of those as you can then go get Shale as a companion.
Then I go to the Dalish camp and start some of of that story line up until I get the Ancient Elvan Armor and get the acorn quest from the Oak Tree, then I am off to Redcliffe and do that Story arch. After saving Connor I go back to the dalish and get further into that story line or finish it.
I save the urn quest until I am at least lvl 12-14 so I can kill the High Dragon easier. Then I do the Orzammar then I do Warden's Keep.

I usually go for Shale as soon as possible to replace Allister who seems to die if a Darkspawn sneezes on him.

Once a companion joins your party, they start to earn XP one-for-one with the Hero. Whereas, if you take your time adding them, the AI will level the character up to something reasonable -- but the character's XP will be at zero for that level. In the scheme of things, that may very well be costing you about 1/2 of a level, XP-wise.
So, with that in mind...
Start -- Hero + Alistair + Morrigan
Traveling -- Dog
Lothering -- Leliana, Sten *
* -- upon arrival, IMMEDIATELY go and get Leliana, and then Sten.. Once added, they will also get XP for everything you do in Lothering.
Honnleath (Shale quest) -- Shale
Circle of Magi Tower (Broken Circle) -- Wynne
Orzammar (Paragon of her kind) -- Oghren
Traveling -- Zevran *
* -- random appearance. This is where he usually appears for me
**** -- Here is about when I pop into Denerim, strictly to pick up the Mage's Collective, Blackstone Irregulars, Chanter's Board, and Gnawed Noble's bartender's quests.
Dalish Camp (Nature of the Beast)
Redcliffe Village
Redcliffe Castle
Urn of Sacred Ashes
Denerim -- pre-Landsmeet
Insert companion quests + sub-quests as convenient, but preferably AFTER Zevran joins..

1. Go to Lothering (since you have to). You do *not* have to finish Lothering before moving on.
2. Save before leaving Lothering (just in case)
3. Go to Denerim, avoid all contact/interactions, and go to the Wonders of Thedas store to buy the Archivist's Sash (which increases XP from codex entries by 50%). Consider stopping into the inn/bar and getting the Blackstone quests (since one needs to be done in Lothering)
4 Now go back to Lothering and clean it out. Make sure that you get any side quests here done before you complete any of the "big 4" quests (Redcliffe/Dalish/Dwarves/Mage Circle) since once one of those is done Lothering gets overrun.
5. ....
6. Profit. (Okay, seriously go and do the Circle next since it's both level-appropriate and contains tons of stat bonuses in the Fade).
7. At this point you are high enough level that you could do *any* of the areas next--including killing a High Dragon. The question is what you *want* to do next.

Circle Tower-Redcliff- Brecilian Forest- Urn of Sacred Ashes- Orzammar- Denerim
This is the easiest path due to the leveling, if I remember correctly, but you may also want consider what specializations you want and do the related quest first, if it has a quest.

Orzammar can be kinda tough at the lower levels, but you get one of your companions there. The really nasty bits are at the end, after Oghren joins your party. So , one good plan is to go to Orzammar, run through it until Oghren joins, then leave, do other stuff until you've leveled a bit.
Of course once you start doing multiple main quests simultaneously, you will get to know old Tegrin rather well.

I hate Tegrin, he's always appearing but never has anything new so becomes useless after the second time I speak to him

If I'm not playing a PC mage I usually go to Circle Tower first, because of Wynne's spirit healing abilities.
Otherwise I tend to do Redcliffe, because the battles are not as fierce as in other places and you get NPC help with them. You can also hit the pause button on some of the main quest lines if you need to. For instance, after finishing Castle Redcliffe, I usually go off and do other things until I've leveled up a bit before continuing on with the Urn quest because it's a tough run. I also will usually leave Orzammar at least once or twice and go do other things, otherwise I find the Deep Roads tedious- lots of big, grinding battles.
The only place where I think there are game-changing consequences for leaving without finishing are Lothering (as someone mentioned, early on Lothering gets the ax) or Redcliffe once you've begun defending the village. The Landsmeet will also trigger game events, such as the destruction of Redcliffe village.
The DLCs are great to do at early levels because you get nifty loot without too pitched a battle.

I would recommend doing them in the order that makes the most roleplaying sense for your character.
My first character (human mage) went first to the Circle of Magi, because he was a mage and figured he would be able to get help there easier. Then he choose Orzammar, because the dwarves are reclusing, so he thought that getting the dwarves' agreement would add some weight to his subsequent appeals for aid. Third was Redcliffe, mostly because Alistair wanted to go (and my PC didn't really see why he was the leader of the Grey Wardens all of a sudden), and the Dalish were left until last because my PC didn't really take them seriously, so he didn't think anyone else would either (and thus having their forces behind him wouldn't help in getting to other treaties honoured).
I think DAO works best as a roleplaying game if you roleplay it. I'm sure my other characters will go about this in an entirely different way. My dwarf noble will probably go first to Denerim. My elf mage will probably go to the Dalish first. My city elf will probably go to Redcliffe first (to stick it to the humans, those bastards).

There's really no preferred order. Redcliffe makes slightly more sense than any of the others to do first storywise, but it's not crucial. Just make sure that you bring Alistair to Redcliffe, and Shale to Orzammar. They have their key revelations in those respective areas.

Bringing Shale to Orzammar isn't always a good idea, depending on the personality of your PC.

I did not know you could break off in the middle of quests to go walkabout ... that might come in handy someday

Some you can't, but most you can. Once you enter the Mages Tower (not the entry hall, but the interior) you can't leave until it's done. Once you get to a certain part of the Deep Roads, you're likewise there until you're done - but any point up until there is just fine.

Alistair suggests that you go to Redcliffe first. It's not necessary to do so, and once you've played through once, you will find that there are reasons you might want to do things in other order depending on what you want to do with character, and in terms of your particular playing style (are you going to depend on a healer or poultices?). The thing about going to Redcliffe first, is that's what starts the story unfolding in a larger way.

This works well for me
1. Circle Tower - leave out some of the tougher fights for later, get your stat boosts
2. DLC
3. Elves [infinite elfroots = infinite (lesser) health poultices
4. Some Denerim/Chanter's board/Mage collective/Blackstone
5. Orzammar
6. Redcliffe
7. Companion Quests (if not done already)
8. Sacred Ashes (I'm level 19 around this time)
9. Denerim mopup

1) DLC
2) Denerim for the side quests
3) Elves, like knarayan said for the elfroots
4) Denerim for the side quests (finish/get new quests)
5) Circle
6) Denerim for the side quests (finish/get new quests)
7) Orzammar
8) Denerim for the side quests (finish/get new quests)
9) Sacred Ash
10) Denerim for the side quests (finish/get new quests)
11) Redcliff
12) Denerim for end game
no rhyme or reason to why I do it this way, just the way I do it. I dont have a dedicated healer in my party, I use potions so doing elves first works best for me so I can buy elfroot to make potions.

If you go to Denerim and visit Brother Genitivi's house in the Market district( you may not have this as a quest, it's simple exploration), you can talk to his apprentice. This kicks off a new quest for Haven, without you having visited Redcliffe first. It's very amusing when you finish Redcliffe - oh the Arl needs the Ashes - "well, I just happen to have some here!".
Re: the OP, the order in terms of level caps the way the vanilla game should be played out is:
Lothering - Mage Tower - Redcliffe - Brecilian Forest - Haven - (Redcliffe End) - Denerim & Orzammar - Landsmeet - Endgame.
So Orzammar will be tough for a party just out of Lothering, not recommended for your first playthrough. It'll be Level 10 while your party will be Level 6ish. Also, as Dragon Age Wiki points out, Haven (Level 8+) tends to get lumped with Redcliffe( Level 6+). It's more effective to interpose Brecilian Forest( Level 7+) there.
A warning if you intend to visit multiple areas for items at the beginning, from Georg Zoller's Dragon Age Manual, instead of finishing each area linearly. Visiting an area locks the enemies in that area to your level in a narrow band. So the game gets easier, because if you visit say Orzammar early on to get the Key, all enemies are Level 10-14.
If you then keep it for later, and come back at Level 16 say, you'll find it easier because the enemies are weaker. But the level of the enemies you kill determines your XP partly, so you won't be reaching the levels that a person who's finishing quests linearly is. It certainly isn't game-killing, but does reduce the maximum level. I haven't tested how much it would, since installing the toolset is a pain with Service Pack 3 required.

I would go to Orzammar after the DLC's (which are after Lothering) for the pure purpose of getting the key to the city (just start a Lord's Trust/Favour quest and collect all the codex's, the wiki has a guide on where they are)
Then I would go to redcliffe and do the the village to unlock far song for my rogue archer (120g required for it on the pc version) and then i will go and do as many non-combat/little or weak combat side-quests to get the 120g along with stealing (using the rogue) for the 120g's to make my rogue a pretty strong ranged damage dealer. After this i would go to brecelian for the elfrouts (you only have to start the quest, you don't need to complete it to access the shop there).
And then i go to circle mage tower to make my main character strong enough to be able to smoothly finish off the redcliffe line and brecilian forest line (castle then forest then do the urn), Leave the high dragon for later and get your drakeskin armour (pay 10g for the first then equip it on your tank and get the dragonscale and turn that into the armour for your main/tank/other player, then get your 2nd drakeskin armour.
Finally, finish off Orzammar and any side-quests left. All you have to do now is the Landsmeet, and the killing of the archdemon.
