Interview with Mac

-ME: Foundation issue #1 comes out on Wednesday, July 24th, via comic book stores or Dark Horse Digital.

-The series will be a monthly, 12-issue run.

-This is not post-ME3.  Based on the title, this is the foundation, and they're going to go back and flesh out existing stories.

-The new Citadel DLC will tie in to the Foundation series.

-Mac confirms that characters we know will be making appearances, and some that we don't know much about may get more exposure. That has possibilities for people's faves from ME1 and ME2...

-Mac discusses the ending to ME3 somewhat.  In particular, he mentions time constraints, which one can infer is an excuse that may add fuel to the anti-EA fire.

-->"I think that, hindsight being 20/20, we set out to make the best game we knew how as we always do. I think given the timeframes that we had to deliver it, we delivered on that."

-->For your additional consideration: "While people had issues with the ending, many people have understood -- sometimes with the help of the Extended Cut -- where we were trying to go with that."

-Mac also unwittingly expressed skepticism towards a Shepard-centric Mass Effect movie.  The interviewer asked him about creating a Shepard-centric comic, and Mac's reasoning against it can easily be applied to the movie, too.

-The new Citadel DLC will tie in to the Foundation series.

Not sure if that leaves me feeling optimistic or distrustful of the Citadel DLC's story... :?

-->For your additional consideration: "While people had issues with the ending, many people have understood -- sometimes with the help of the Extended Cut -- where we were trying to go with that."

Understatement of the freaking decade... and I'd add that without the Extended Cut, many people wouldn't know jacksh*t of where BW was trying to go with the ending. <_<

Sigh. SuperMac shouldn`t be allowed to make another ME comic after the literary masterpiece that was Mass Effect: Evolution.
Cant`wait until he butchers another interesting character.

I'd say they were "going" for an intensely personal gut wrenching final decision, and... uh... lotta people didn't get over that.

I never got into the comics. I think David's (DA) have been delightfully plotted (and Alexander's scripts have been uncanny), but what I've seen of the ME ones leaves much to be desired.

Definitely not interested.

I think the Citadel DLC will fill in Shep on some of the things that are gonna happen in this comic...and then they're gonna expand on it in more detail by showing it to us from different perspectives.

Oh dear, another ME comic. I'll probably read a wiki synopsis instead. Though I'm going to wait, and see before I give any opinion on it. You never know.

Still rated 93 on metacritic, haha. I remember when they started deleting reviews to polish up the score because everyone was convinced ME3 got reviewbombed into oblivion when the ending poop first hit the fanm back in march last year. Metacritic schmetacritic.

I really hope you are right, but I still afraid they wont see the movie in the same way they see all the rest. I really hope they will expand the universe with the movie, insteady of a Shepard's trilogy adaptation.. I really hope..

Maybe, but I can proudly tell that I got the ending before the EC. Most of the added stuff explaining what happen in each ending only confirmed what I already understood from the original...

The problem is, I now live in a post ME3 ending world, had I not experienced the colored poop i`d probably be very excited for this comic but as it stands now, anything Mass Effect related just feels meh.

I`m looking forward to the Citadel DLC but only because it`s another excuss for me to roll with Shepard and gang for a new adventure one last time.

Pardon, I didn't mean to imply that Bioware would cancel the movie.  That's not the case.  What I meant is, although Mac didn't realize it when he was expressing skepticism of a Shepard comic, he could be seen as essentially explaining why a Mass Effect movie starring Shepard would be problematic.

I think a 3 story series on Shepard's origins and service records could work. That way you could mix up male/female, paragon/renegade, and backgrounds. One episode the Skylian Blitz with a paragon female spacer, the other Torfan with a male renegade earthborn.

Couldn't have put it better myself. The all-consuming cancer of the ending looms like a constant shadow over everything ME-related these days. I know that trying to replay the games these days is damn-near impossible. I feel like I've given myself a job that I have to slog through; I keep thinking I should be getting paid to do it, it feels THAT much like work.

Also, way to act like it's the audience that's at fault, Mac, you bloody HACK.

No.

Here's an interview with Karpyshyn published on August 20, 2012.

This is the applicable quote: "I never say never, so it's possible I will go back," he admitted. "Right now, I'm focusing on my novels, and I don't feel that urge to return to games. But down the road if the bug returns, I might take another crack at games. And if I ever do, BioWare is probably the most likely place for my return."
