I guess this is one old man who isn't going to finish this game. I'm tired of hitting roadblocks that I can't get past.. I couldn't kill the dragon so I figured I'd get back to him before going after the head werewolf. I decided to go to Denerim. I went to the Pearl and took care of the gangs there and tried to get back to get some supplies, I'm almost out of healing potions. If I try to go back to the market I run into a group who hunts Grey Wardens and attacks me. I've come so close to beating them, but after 4-5 attempts I decided to try something else. I went after the first back ally gang. After a couple attempts I got past them, but now the game forces me to go to the next thug gang. There I'm surrounded by 10 gang members with one yellow boss. There's just no way I can get past that, no way. I've got Alister, Morr....something, the mage, my war dog, and I'm a level 9 or 10 rouge. I've played The Witcher and most Neverwinter games and I've never had this much trouble at normal difficulty. What to do?

Perhaps you should go to the Circle Tower and pick up Wynn? Mage with heals.

Yes until you get more familiar using the tactics section for your comrades you definitely need a healer

The best way (I feel) to go through the game is to first go to Redcliff (and make sure you got Leliana from the Lothering inn and Sten from th cage just outside of Lothering) and then because of Redcliff (depending how your actions go there) then you should be going to the Mage Tower (thats where you get Wynne) then afterwards, go to Orzammar in the frostback mountains, help them out there and then go to the elves. It worked out great for my first rouge go through... so it should be for you!

Yeah, but Tim15856 is stuck in the Back Alleys scripted confrontation areas. I suggest moving your whole party to a corner away from most of the archers. That will lure the mêlée types to come after your party and you can take them out in somewhat safer quarters. If you happen to be in the area when they close the gate on you to separate you from your party, hit the TAB key. There is a lever next to the gate to open it back up again.

Check your inventory and see if you have any other Heal Potion sizes there that you might have missed.

Hang in there. You can do it. :)

you can always go to the ferelden map anywhere in denerim, just click on the map again and then you can get out of denerim easily and heal up at camp and buy potions from your awsome dwarf buddy

There is no right or wrong order, but Mages Tower first after Lothering is a big help for 2 reasons. First, you get Wynne, your mage healer. Second, you get 21 bonus attribute points there.

You don't have to play on Normal mode - switch to Easy until you understand the game, how it works, and what you should be doing. Then go back to Normal if you wish.

Those fights can be tough, especially without a healer. Make sure Alistair does your tanking for you and holds aggro. Have dog pick off ranged enemies. Have Morrigan use cc, and AoE. Have her use Heal (always give all the mages the first spell in Healing). Get her to force field or crushing prison the yellow mobs to keep them out of it while you thin the rest down.

And check your builds to make sure the characters you do have are specced in the 'right way' for their jobs.

Sorry ole timer but you need to prepare better with your encounters, you need to follow your journal and use your party to the fullest. I was in the same boat as you as early as Ostagar as I can't kill the Ogre in the tower of Ishal until I learned to pause and rethink my strategy from that time forth I was able to whack anything that moves.

With the challenge scaling different areas of the game are designed for a certain level character.

Once you have been through Lothering you are able to go in any area you choose. Some areas will require a higher level than you are presently. Mage Tower and Redcliffe - Level 6; Brecilian Forest - Level 7; Haven - Level 8; Orzamar and Denerim - Level 10

So after leaving Lothering I head for the Mage Tower and Wynne. I then go to Honnleath and pick up Shale. On to the Warden's Keep, followed by the Brecilian Forrest. By that time I am ready to do Redcliffe and Haven. If I am up to level 12 I will tackle the Dragon, if not I come back later. I leave Denerim for last although I do visit there earlier for the shops.

It's R-o-g-u-e, btw.  Rouge is that red stuff women put on their cheeks.  [Just thought I'd toss that in.]

Okay, you're a Rogue.  Do you realize that Stealth is actually better than an Invisibility spell?  (There's no duration.  It stays "On" until a high-level dude sees through it or _you_ do something to give yourself away.)  You actually have the ability to Hold your party at the front door, and then go ahead to scout the lay of the land, disarm traps, open locks, backstab enemies off by themselves, etc.

There's all kinds of alternate strategies; you just have to think outside of YOUR box sometimes.  Tackling opponents head on (which, face it, is about the only play in Dog's playbook) is seldom the best strategy.

As a suggestion: Exit Denerim and go back to Camp.  Return after swapping out Dog for either Leliana (2 Stealthed Rogues) or Wynne (2 Mages = more firepower and Wynne = HEALING!).

Just pick them off one-by-one if you can. The technique is to split the enemy groups into smaller more digestible pieces, and ALWAYS ALWAYS target the SAME enemy with EVERYONE in your party. Once the enemy is dead, rince and repeat with the others.

My first playthough I had a bit of trouble at the start on normal difficulty, then I adjusted pretty well. On my second playthrough on normal it was a joke and I never failed a battle, without even bothering to micro-manage. Just keep in there, it's really easy once you get the hang of it.

Well, not much to add, cause SusanStoHelit already said everything. Good luck with that encounter!

Click on map & then click one of the icons to open up world map & head to camp then head to Denerim. This way you'll avoid the Denerim ramdom Encounter. For some reason Camp is available at any given location at Denerim.

This will solve your problem.

Also do not steal and get cuaght in Denerim. Denerim Guards ramdom encounter is one of the hardest encounter you'll run into especially at high level. You'll be facing at least 20 heavy infantry men with Silverite or dragonscale Heavy Chain Mail. Almost harder than facing Sir Catherian at Royal Palace and choosing to fight her.

Yeah, yeah. Sometimes my fingers get dyslexic. :D With level 1 stealth, they see me in no time. In all of these big battles I try to get everyone in a corner away from archers. In the back ally that still meant eight guys surrounding me.

Most all other games of this sort are rather linear so that you usually hit an area when you are close to the proper level to deal with it, not so with this one. The first spell I gave Morrigan was heal, but that isn't cutting it. Like some others have said, Alister isn't doing very well as my tank and is usually the first to die. I could not get Sten released, I stopped getting chat options with the Mother. If I can't get out of this jam, perhaps I'll go back to a saved game where I can get to the mage tower and then follow some of the advice here.

When you leave the Pearl and you're selecting where on the map you want to go hit "Wide Open World" on the bottom of the map.  That will allow you to go anywhere in Fereldan.  Head back to Lothering and have Leliana in your party when you talk to the revered mother about Sten.  She will ask Leliana's opinion and then she'll give you the key.

Also, if you have the PC version there is downloadable content that you can get no matter what version of the game you have.  Lion's Paw are particularly good boots if you're having Alistar tank.  You can get them all at the Wiki.  dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/DLC

I've found Alistair and Sten to both be quite good tanks, if you dump points into strength and constitution, and give them decent armour. Take another look at what skills and talents you have selected, perhaps you've missed one that can be a lifesaver - Morrigan's Mind Blast (stuns nearby enemies) is a good example, and for your tank don't neglect the Taunt and Threaten talents.

Also worth remembering is that Morrigan can also tank if need be, and I frequently have her dive into the action, casting Mind Blast then shape shifting to Bear or something.

Make heavy use of the pause function - when I first started playing, I got into the habit of pausing every few seconds whilst in combat, taking a few moments tocheck everybody's health, apply healing potions or spells, or switching abilities. Played like that, it's almost a turn-based game, but you start to feel a bit more in control.

Don't feel too bad though - the Back Alleys quest in Denerim had me stuck for a while too.

EDIT:  BTW, there's a good explanation of the tactics system here: http://dragonage.wik...om/wiki/Tactics, and it's also worth checking out the game guide:  http://www.amazon.co...l/dp/076156246X

Hope that helps

I did the constitution route on a couple of play throughs.  This last time with Alistar I did Str until 40 and then all Dex.  I put on the Blood Dragon chest which has +50 health and the Lifegiver which has +50 health.  Combined with his enourmous dex he never gets hit and he still has 400 hp at lvl 17 when he does!  I'm loving it!

Edit:  I always play on Nightmare.

Or just have Leliana in your party and she sweet talks the Reverend Mother.

Play on Easy. I have heard that they patched the game because even Easy difficulty was considered too hard. My first character struggled a lot, too, because I didn't know what to do especially early in the game when you're vulnerable.

Here are a couple tips for early on: In Ostagar, buy up and loot as many elfroots as you can and buy some flasks. Once you get Morrigan, have her make as many health poultices as you are able. Stock up early and often on these. Give Morrigan a heal spell at the first opportunity, and set her tactic so that she'll automatically heal an Ally at less than 50% health. Set all your peeps so that they chug a health potion at less than... well, early in the game I set it to 25% health, to save on potions, but 50% is better.

For mob battles, there are strategies that make them manageable. Having Area-of-Effect attacks is key. Like giving Morrigan the Sleep spell and Wynne Earthquake (the easiest ones to get early on because those spell chains are already started), having your rogue able to use acid flasks or bombs and the mage with Mind Blast for smaller clusters of enemies at close range. Don't rush in to a big mob battle. Try to get your party into a narrow area where enemies have to come at you a few at a time, ideally out of range of the archers- often you can do this just by running back to the entrance area you just came through. Archers hurt, a lot. If possible, have your mage deal with them while the melee fighters are fighting.

Later on in the game, enchanting weapons with Hale runes will really improve your team's durability.  (Enchantment!)

If you go with giving Morrigan Sleep as Addai67 suggests, then don't forget the spell combinations Casting Sleep then Horrror on a target has a much more damaging effect than either on its own.

Just go to your map of Demerol hit y then go to your party camp. Then you aren't stick in one place. Then go and see the merchant at camp, buy potion flasks a lot of them. Then go to the brecelian outskirts. After the cutscenes go to the merchant there. He sells unlimited elfroot buy as many elfroot as flasks. Once that's done use morrigans herbalism and create loads of lesser health potions. As far as tactics go you want to set this particular tactic to every character

Self

health under 50%

Use weakest health poultice

This should keep your party right for most fights and the old elfroot party camp tactic is a very cheap way of keeping your potion levels up
