The game's graphics seemingly at random smear or tear (guess that's what I should call it). Anyone know a fix for this?

Do you have V-Sync on? Tearing in-game usually means you need to have V-Sync on while playing. You will lose some FPS doing it but the tearing will go away with it. Also your setup is a bit old. The 8500 GT isn't the strongest card out there (Gorath Alpha will come in here bashing it as a business card) but it will do I guess since you are running an old Pentium 4. However the problem to your problem is just activating V-Sync.

Here's the Vista minimum and the 8500 GT:

That shows it trailing on three shared performance criteria, at 57%, 80%, and 53%
(In edit) Here is the pertinent segment of the Rankings list:
- ATI Radeon X1650 XT
- NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT
- NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GS

IMO, the cards below that line aren't actually good enough to run DA: O properly.
- NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Vanilla (PCI-e version, 256 MB)
- ATI Radeon X1650 Pro
- ATI Radeon X1600 XT
- NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT <~ This is the (nVidia) Official Minimum (disagree)
- NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS
- NVIDIA GeForce 6800 ( AGP version, 128 MB )
- ATI Radeon X1600 Pro (256 MBs, Max usable VRAM)
- ATI Radeon X1300 XT (renamed X1600 Pro)
- NVIDIA GeForce 6800 XT
- ATI Radeon X700 series
- NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT
- ATI Radeon X600 XT *
========================= Very Low Quality & on downward from here
- NVIDIA GeForce 6600

The problem I have is similar to the one I had before with an ATI Radeon 4550 card, the game just stops after a few minutes of gameplay (Yes, After Ostagar) and I get a Windows Error pop-up saying the game has stopped working and it will now close. With ATI it was a driver issue, I have updated this geforce driver to the most recent and doesn't fix the problem.
My question to you Gorath Alpha is, What Graphics card would you recommend somewhere around the $100 - $250 US Dollar range that would be average or better to play this game with? Note, I also play Duke Nukem Forever (merely for fun and laughs) and I also want to start playing Skyrim.
