I'm terrible at shooters.  Or rather, terrible at shooters that don't include a pause function and space magic :D  I'm jumpy, easily stressed, nauseated by first person perspective, and pretty much the worst person ever for playing a game like this.  And I loved it.

I wouldn't say it was fun.  I had most of the first half of the game spoiled, but I was still so upset I was shaking.  My boyfriend was looking on as I yelled at my protagonist, and asked me, "Why don't you just stop?"

That's the question, isn't it?  Why didn't I stop?  Morbid curiosity?  Because the game told me to keep going?  Because I'd heard great things about the game, and wanted to see it through?  I didn't even play through all the endings.  There was only one end that I thought was appropriate after everything that happened, and I YouTubed the others.

I'd like to give this game another run through after a while to pick up more of the details, but it was great.  It was unfun and stressful and upsetting, but it was still very worth my time.

I gave up on Metal Gear Solid: Revengeance. The voice acting was terrible, archaic characterization, repetitive battle system, the one trick pony Free Blade Mode got old... I just couldn't handle it. Sure I could've forced my way through it since I bought it, but where's the fun in that?

Point is, don't force yourself through a game if you're not enjoying it. That's my two cents.

Spec Ops is unique amongst a crowd of boring, repetitive and just plain dull shooters. It's narrative holds strong, but also, it's level design.

Has anyone ever notice how modern shooters just *love* the brown palette covering their entire game. It's like the screen was caked in diarrhea and left out to dry.

At least Spec Ops had variety in its levels. Lots of colour, different areas and a FREAKING AQUARIUM!

The aquarium was gorgeous, but by the time I got to it, I was too busy yelling at my screen about how there was still freaking WATER in the city :D  I also spent a long time staring at the fancy glass giraffes in an attempt to stall progressing in the game at all.

*blinks* I really didn't see anything that stood out other than the story trying to hard to be edgy.

And what exactly would shooter have to do to *be* edgy (not teen version of the word), if you don't mind me asking?

The game used game mechanics, (illusion of) choice and good writing to both portray a soldier's descent to madness, and make you feel like a sack of s*** by the end for taking part in these events.

When most other shooters make you feel like righteous warheroes in a battle of good&evil, especially military shooters... I say this is plenty "edgy"

Differences of opinion. I haven't played a shooter with a story as complex as what it had.

In the end you never really know what was it that killing all those soldiers and getting to that tower really accomplished. After all that, it seemed like it was all mindless killing and the final decision in which if you choose to live basically means denying everything, on the other hand I thought that at least that way someone was saved when asked for evac or you could just let that city die, after all it did become an inhuman hell hole in which I bet everyone became an animal.

I didn't feel bad at all, infact after the game was over I just wondered why the hell they just... ah well that would be spoiling. It played like your standard modern third person shooter, and it was kinda short to boot.

Play Serious Sam 3 if you want a shooter that kicks you in the balls in terms of difficulty.

Oh so sad, lulz.

Did you collect all the intel documents during each level as they clue you in to the events that happened before Walker's squad entered Dubai?

It isn´t that kind of kick in the balls.

I guess it´s true what they say. Even the most brutal antiwar tale will miss the mark for some people.

What point? The plot isn't rocket science and it didn't move me. If I want to be moved I'll watch actual documentaries or listen to my mother and father tell me their life story.

SO:TL isn't anti war as it's mostly anti glamourization of violence/warfare in TPS. I agree that the plot isn't rocket science but the same can't be said for it's use of symbolism, and criticisms of it's genre.

Heh, I feel similar about Alan Wake. The story is interesting and characters are great too, but I was put off by repetitive combat, same environments (most of the game takes place in a dark forest), driving physics, small enemy variety, poor facial animation, almost no exploration. Kinda gave up, but I still play it when I feel like it. Still, not sure if I have enough patience to finish it.

Never bothered to pick up Spec Ops just because of the story. I remember watching a youtube walkthrough once, though.

I got the majority of the intel documents; I inevitably missed a few while running around going "AHH WHO'S SHOOTING AT ME!"  But I had enough to piece together the story.  The one that really killed me was Konrad's letter to his son.

No thanks!  Like I said, I'm the worst at shooters :)  I was just impressed by this one, and not for its mechanics.

So I pulled this out of "The Pile" (My stack of games which are unfortunately still in shrink wrap) and am about to play it. Probably should've started Dead Space 3 since it's still in the mail envelope, but I'll see how this one is.

It gets worse when you factor in Konrad's fate afterwards, but the situation was all around tragic.

I got halfway through before I have up. Gorgeous setting but it's a bit to generic shooter for me. It's also trying to hard to show the "horrors of war."

Aye. The game mechanics are not that awesome, but the game does exactly what Yager wanted it to do: criticize the glorification of war in the genre and that rather well, imo.

Glad that you liked the game Sable! Welcome to Dubai!
