With the release of hte final DLC, I want to replay the series.  The problem is, I've played through ME1 several times, and I'm really not feeling it this time.  Part of it is, I want to try some different "builds" but the mechanics changed pretty significantly between 1 & 2, so playing through ME1 as a Sentinel or an Infiltrator is very different than  playing them in ME2/3.  So, should I just download Genesis and start off on ME2, or should I bite the bullet and try for a lvl 50+ in ME1?  How much do the bonuses you get for the transfer really matter?  Are there any significant details or nuance lost from skipping 1?

The biggest difference between an import and using Genesis is your starting level. Import a level 60 character, start at level 5. Import a level 50-59 character, start at level 3. Using Genesis will start you at level 1.

Using Genesis will allow you to make the big decisions, but you will lose out on some of the nuances by importing an ME1 save, such as cameos, emails, and the occassional dialogue.

I dislike playing ME1 now myself (too tedius I find), but I usually grind it out anyway. If you are looking for level 50 single-playthrough builds, then I recommend reading [Mass Effect 1] Start of the Journey: Single Playthrough Builds by Simbacca. You do not have to complete every quest if you do not feel like it.

Are you playing on the PC? Because then I'd seriously suggest using the Gibbed Save Editor, you can pick your choices for pretty much every quest, your level etc.

The stuff that transfers from 1 to 2 that are not part of what Genesis covers are relatively minor but add atmosphere - it affects background audio events on the Citadel, gives a minor advantage (start at level 2, 3, or 5, instead of 1 - and a chunk of money and minerals) for gameplay which is pretty easy to deal without, and perhaps most meaningfully, it means you've actually taken your Commander Shepard through the first games events, experiencing them as they occur instead of just getting an extended flashback sequence.

If those aren't worth the added play time that going through ME1 requires, Genesis is your best bet. Otherwise, just start with ME2 and Genesis because it will save you a significant chunk of time.
