How do you handle them early on in the game? Tips are welcome?

If you are playing on easy, you may want to not worry about friendly fire and use some aoe's from a mage.
The easiest is to train one of your mages with some crowd control abilities. Morigan starts with mind blast, but this does not last long. Eventually you can train sleep and use that.
With my first play through I dealt with larger groups by equipping everyone with bows and telling them to hold position. I'd pull the outer edge of the group, kill them, then move up and pull a few more. Kind of lame but was the only way I could get past at the time.

Use crowd control. Paralyze, Horror and other trapping spells. If you have an archer, use Pinning Shot. Also you could try to move rogues behind the mobs, use stuns and keep backstabbing.babydavey wrote...

Go through your spells and check what CC tools you have in use and use them.
Morrigan (and any other mage can get it too) has a good AoE stun which is very useful if you can hit 4 or more mobs with it.
EDIT: Oh and order your party to attack the same target. It gets killed pretty fast, which decreases the amount of damage your party is taking all the time. Having everyone fighting different targets is not that effective.
