So I should be banned for something that just sort of randomly happened (something that I have no idea how to manipulate, nor have any interest in manipulating)?

Makes sense.

Perhaps it's banned because it's a bug you can deliberately exploit.

So a few characters being about to fully max out while none of the others can doesn't scream COMMON SENSE to you?

Oh, it is common sense to me. Or people who really do care to find out. That is because I am an adult and I "enquire". Some kids may not even care to find out. It is not like the missile glitch where it is done intentionally. The glitch OP talks about just happens while promoting a character. Holy Avenger's advice is quite sound and that should clear the problem.
But yeah, it should indicate to those who get this issue that " something is off".
Relax dude. Just my opinion. No need to get yourself excited and start using "capital letters". :P

I'm sure that's why they ban people for it, but surely a better solution would be to find the cause of the problem and solve it once and for all.

yeah, it would be better if there were no bugs in the game.  honest players will know something is wrong and google for the answer, not exploit the game.   Dishonest players have no problem finding out how to missile glitch.

another class, look at the powers, and switch back, that will fix it!"

Right...

If you honestly had a problem with the extra points a simple google search would find the solution so I don't see why you have an issue with cheaters getting banned

I don't get why people are forgetting the easiest cure. Just don't spend the extra points. Of course the first time it happens you may not notice and need to promote or burn a respec. But after that you should know something is wrong and go searching for it.

If it's the collector adept your going to have to promote, sadly.

I still don't get how it's possible to max all the trees without realising that something isn't right. Surely when you've maxed 4 of the 5 it would be obvious that something's gone wrong somewhere.

Relatively new player gets a new character and it is glitched.  He does  not read BSN and thinks that the character is supposed to have all the skill points.  New player gets banned because of Bioware programming bug.  Yeah, that is fair.

Yup. Just promote or use another reset card.

I have a character I never use with all the sixes. I am NOT going to waste a respec card just to sort it out.

They can ban me if they want but as far as I am concerned I am not wasting a respec card fixing what I didn't break.

I doubt anyone's been banned for this. The missile glitch completely took the fun out of the game for peeps in that lobby. This, people prob wouldn't even notice. Cheating compendium and news eludes to char lvl exploit getting you banned. Never actually says ability point exploit.

I'd agree with that line of thinking if, after spending all the points and maxing out a character, the point allotment counter up in the corner didn't say "-****thepoleese" points to spend. That's weird enough for someone to doubt it's intentional.

The missle glitch was something you had to attempt to do, and could easily be undone.

This is something that just happens for people, and often costs them a respec or a promotion.

Let me guess, you didn't realize that you invested 6 ranks in every skill?  This issue is just as easy to avoid doing as the missile glitch.  Claiming ignorance is not a valid defense.

Yes, it is.  Someone new to the game may think that the new character they pulled is supposed to be that way.  People shouldn't be banned for something that's not their fault.  There should be an in game FAQ for this since people are being banned.  An in game explaination would mean that no one could claim ignorance.  The ONLY reason I knew about this bug was because of the forums.

If they actually ban people for doing this, that's absolute bull****. I don't think they do, however, but I could be wrong.

No, it's not.  If you commit a crime and get caught, you can be arrested, even if you do not know the law that you are accused of breaking.  As you agreed to EA's and Bioware's terms when logging into their servers, you also agreed to not break their rules.  You did read the TOS, right?  While I agree that you should not be banned for a simple mistake, there is a huge difference between having it happen once or twice and taking steps to do it on multiple characters.  Again, ignorance is never a valid defense, especially when the rules were provided in detail.

Just got this bug for the first time with the Talon engineer. Didn't notice until I reached 6/6/4/6/6 (or something like that) as a level 19.

Haven't used the kit and don't plan to, but with all of the weaknesses of the character I have to admit I was tempted...sorta felt like karmic balance.

As much as I can agree that it is fundamentally BiOWare's fault for buggy programming ... but this. This, that, and all of the above.

If people don't have alarm bells ringing all over their mind when seeing this, then they really should consider looking at themselves for a change instead of blaming all of it on buggy programming. I don't just take those ten bucks change I got because two bills stuck together without the cashier realizing it jsut because "duh, not my fault".

A lot of people just punch the points in not realizing 84 is the normal maximum. Before they realize it's too late, BAM, a character you can be banned for playing.

Not if you do it accidentally. It is clearly stated in the "cheating compendium".

I find it sad that we have to use a reset card (comming from... packs !!!) to compensate the incompetence of devs about this bug. Of course we should never put any points in the first place, but some times, things are so automatics... You know, you add one power, than an other, and at the end you add all of them, you click "ok" and there we go. Happened to me once. I felt bad so I used a reset card. My character was level 19 (so I could not promote...) and I spec it like it was level 20, because, you know... like always, you click untill it says "no more points".

No... This bug should not be an offence. It is ridiculous. It is like if a road had a true speed limit à 30, but the sign says "130", and you go "50" because even if you know it is 30 there, you do things automatically.

Just to smother that little bit of rage, I have yet to hear about bioWare EVER banning someone over this unless it was exploited in the classic sense of "exploiting". And with that I mean I have only ever heard of exactly ONE guy getting banned because he deliberately exploited the glitch to enable ALL his characters run with permanent 6/6/6/6/6 builds for quite some time.

Afaik that was the only instance anyone official had ever used the word ban in that regard.

Yeah. I merely discuss ideas, here, but I am eager to see a bioware's statement about that.

Woah, settle down.  There is nothing stated in game (to my knowledge) how many points we SHOULD be allotted.  Without this knowledge, one can inadvertently "cheat".  If you're talking about people who exploit (not sure there is a way to tell with this bug), it would have been helpful if you had made that clear.  My point still stands...unless this bug is explicitly explained in game, there are people who do not know this is considered cheating.  Thanks to the forum, I was able to recognize the problem when it happened, so I was able to fix the characters.  Not that it matters, but I never played any of the messed up characters until they were fixed.  Had I not read the forum, who knows?  ME3 is my first MP experience.  I learned A LOT in the last several months.  The TOS is incredibly vague.  A newbie who doesn't frequent bsn, has this happen to them...and then get banned?  I feel sorry for them.  If people want to go on a crusade to get rid of intentional cheaters, that's fine by me.  What bothers me is the witch hunt for the innocents.
